Ash's Tauros

These Tauros are a group of 30 Normal-type Pokémon that were captured by Ash in the Kanto Safari Zone.

Personality

The herd of Tauros mainly go stampeding. Mostly, this occurs in the wide open space at the lab. Their stampeding has been put into good effect, as they woke up Ash's Snorlax when Professor Oak needed it. However, their stampeding has also damaged properties, like when Ash first returned to Pallet Town when they stampeded through a fence and when they stampeded through Prof. Oak's Lab, leaving a huge hole in the wall. When Ash greets his Tauros, they usually stampede at Ash excitedly, launching him upward in the process.

Pokémon the Series: The Beginning

At the Safari Zone, Ash used a Safari Ball to catch his first Tauros, at the same time that Brock used another Safari Ball to catch one for Ash. Ash caught a second Tauros while attempting to catch a Rhydon. By the end, Ash had only often interfered with Ash's attempt to catch Pokémon, always running in front of his Poké Balls when he tried to catch another Pokémon. By the end, all thirty Tauros were sent to Prof. Oak's Lab.[1]

The thirty Tauros once stampeded into the Team Rocket trio, launching them away. The Tauros broke through a fence, and Ash and his friends are annoyed that they had to repair it.[2]

Tauros was one of three of Ash's Pokémon that Oak offered Ash to use in the upcoming Orange League, other than Muk or Kingler. Ash chose Tauros and later used him to battle Drake's Gengar. Tauros used Fissure on Gengar, whom it missed, and Gengar used Confuse Ray, confusing Ash's Tauros; because of this, Ash recalled his Tauros and sent out his Lapras instead.[3]

Ash later sent out his Tauros to battle Drake's Venusaur. Tauros used Fissure but got trapped in the sand, rendering the move useless. Tauros then used Take Down, also dodging Venusaur's Solar Beam, and using the move to launch Drake's Venusaur. Ash's Tauros was hit by a Vine Whip but defeated the enemy with Take Down. Tauros later fought Drake's Dragonite, whom it tried to damage with Take Down, but Dragonite's Body Slam made him unsuccessful. Tauros is defeated by Dragonite's Thunder, though Ash's Pikachu defeated Drake's Dragonite.[4]

Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver

Tauros, Kingler, Muk, and Snorlax once greeted Ash via the videophone to wish him luck in his forthcoming battle with Whitney.[5]

Ash swapped out his Heracross at Professor Oak's Lab for Tauros because he needed it to participate at a Tauros battle competition at Palmpona. He won in a battle against ten-time champion Fernando and his Tauros, also making Ash the winner of the championship.[6] Ash later returned his Tauros to Professor Oak's Lab.[7]

Tauros listened to DJ Mary's interview with Ash.[8]

Tauros was used in a battle against Gary at the Silver Conference. Tauros was hit by Nidoqueen's Rock Smash, then it used Horn Attack. Tauros was stopped and defeated by a Hyper Beam attack from Gary's Nidoqueen.[9]

Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire

Upon Ash's return to Pallet Town following his adventures in Hoenn, Tauros charged towards him along with his other Pokémon. However, in their excitement, they carried Ash off, so Ash had to be rescued by Bayleef.[10]

At the Battle Frontier in Kanto, one of Ash's Tauros battled an Alakazam used by Salon Maiden Anabel. Tauros' Take Down was blocked by Alakazam's Psychic, then the latter used Focus Punch. Tauros used Take Down again, which Alakazam dodged before hitting Tauros, using Psybeam to defeat Tauros.[11]

Tauros later fought Anabel's Metagross. It used Take Down but collided with Metagross's Iron Defense. He used Horn Attack after dodging Meteor Mash, and when Metagross used Hyper Beam, Tauros used Double Team. Metagross launched Hyper Beam at all copies of Tauros, but Tauros resisted it and used Take Down to intercept his opponent's Meteor Mash. As a result of the clashing moves, both Pokémon fainted at the same time.[12]

Oak once informed Ash that his Pokémon at the ranch were worried about him after hearing of his defeat to Brandon, so they decided to make a poster where each of them had a print, including the 3 tails of one of Ash's Tauros.[13]

Pokémon the Series: Black & White

Tauros appeared when Ash visited Professor Oak's Lab. They trampled over after he left the lab, leaving him on the ground. At the end of the episode, the Tauros appeared in a photo with the other Pokémon that Ash had collected up to that point.[14]

Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon

When Ash visited Professor Oak's Lab with his friends from the Pokémon School, the Tauros were excited to see Ash again. The Tauros stampeded at Ash, launching him into the air, to which Ash's Pikachu is saddened by.[15]

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

When Ash reunited with his Tauros, they stampeded at Ash, sending him flying, though the fall is eased by Ash's Muk.[16]

At one point, Ash's Tauros greeted Ash when he visited the corral outside of Prof. Oak's Lab. The Tauros later ran around on the grass as their other companions trained Ash's party for the forthcoming Masters Eight Tournament. They also watched the confrontation between Ash and Paul. Tauros encouraged Ash to face the Masters Eight Tournament and were present in the photo that Delia took of Ash and his Pokémon.[17]

Ash's Tauros and his other Pokémon at Prof. Oak's Lab watched the broadcast of the Masters Eight Tournament, celebrating each of Ash's victories and becoming nervous over each defeat of Ash and his Pokémon.[18]

Tauros was in a vision that Ash's Pikachu had when he was weakened by the Fire Blast used by Leon's Charizard, encouraging Pikachu to get up, defeat Charizard, and ultimately enable Ash to win the Masters Eight Tournament.[19]

The Tauros were seen being fed by Ash and later again as he searched for the missing Charmander.[20]

Trivia

  • The episode in which Tauros were caught in was skipped in most dubs outside of Asia due to featuring guns excessively. The only mention of the Tauros originating from the Safari Zone occurs in "Showdown at the Po-ké Corral", when Oak mentioned that Ash captured the thirty Tauros there, but he does not elaborate on how Ash had caught them.
  • It has never been revealed whether Ash uses the same Tauros whenever one of them is transferred to him or if Professor Oak simply sends him a random one each time. However, it is likely that the one Ash uses is the leader of the herd.
  • Despite capturing all his Tauros in green Safari Balls, and these being seen in storage at Professor Oak's Lab. Ash always uses regular red Poké Balls when sending his Tauros into battle.
  • Ash was offered a Rhyhorn in exchange for his Tauros after winning Tauros battling competition. Ash had tried to capture a Rhyhorn in the Safari Zone, but a Tauros ran past and was captured instead. Despite this, Ash chooses to keep his Tauros.
  • Tauros is Ash's only Pokémon that used a one-hit knockout move.
  • Tauros is the only Pokémon that Ash has more than one of.
  • Tauros is Ash's first Pokémon that is not part of an evolutionary line.
  • Tauros are thirty of the members of Ash's team not to appear in any of the Pokémon movies.
