Pokémon Sword & Shield Gigantamax

Gigantamax (Japanese: キョダイマックス, HepburnKyodaimaxtrans. lit. Kyodaimakkusu) is a feature appearing in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.

Mechanics

It is a variant of Dynamax; while any Pokémon can Dynamax, only certain Pokémon can Gigantamax. In addition to changing the Pokémon's size, it changes its appearance as well. It works similarly to Mega Evolution, but unlike Mega Evolution, it doesn't have any Pokémon to change or gain a new type upon changing its size and appearance.

Obtaining

Pokémon capable of Gigantamaxing can typically be caught in Max Raid Battles, however, these encounters are usually low. Only a few dens in the Wild Area and the Isle of Armor feature battles with Gigantamax Pokémon, while most dens in the Crown Tundra can have Gigantamax Pokémon Max Raid Battles.

After completing the Champions' Cup for the first time, Leon will leave behind a Poké Ball in his house at Postwick containing a Charmander capable of Gigantamaxing.

Others, such as Meowth, are set to be distributed via events. Notably, Pikachu and Eevee capable of Gigantamax can be received if the player has save data of Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!, respectively. Pikachu, Meowth, and Eevee capable of Gigantamax cannot evolve.

If the player character has progressed far enough in the Isle of Armor storyline, three clusters of Max Mushrooms can be given to an NPC in the Master Dojo to create a Max Soup. Only Pokémon whose species have Gigantamax forms can drink it, allowing players to give their Pokémon the ability to Gigantamax without having to catch Pokémon capable of doing so themselves. This is enforced by the fact that Pokémon that can are not blacked out and those that can't (i.e. anything not in the list below) are blacked out. The only exception to this rule is Melmetal possibly due to its Gigantamax form not being distributed at the time.

G-Max moves

Also like Dynamax, Gigantamax Pokémon also have their own Max Moves called G-Max moves. Each G-Max move is exclusive to a specific species of Gigantamax Pokémon. All of a Gigantamax Pokémon's moves of a certain type turn into G-Max moves, unlike Pokémon-specific Z-Moves, which can only be used if a Pokémon knows a specific move.

Trivia

  • There is at least one Gigantamax form and G-Max move of every type, regardless of DLC.
  • Applin's evolved forms having the same Gigantamax form could be either an error or intentionally done. However, their G-Max moves are different, as well as their cries.
  • Currently, almost all Pokémon who can Gigantamax are from either Generation I or Generation VIII.
  • There are certain Pokémon capable of Gigantamaxing that have something different no other Gigantamax Pokémon have.
    • Urshifu is the only Legendary Pokémon that has a Gigantamax form.
      • Additionally, it is the only Pokémon with more than one Gigantamax form.
    • Pikachu, Meowth, Eevee, and Duraludon are the only Gigantamax Pokémon whose Gigantamax forms are not the final evolution of their evolution stage. If able to be Gigantamaxed, they cannot evolve.
      • Duraludon is the only one that did not have this until The Indigo Disk DLC, where Archaludon appeared.
    • Lapras is the only Gigantamax Pokémon who does not have an evolution line when not Gigantamaxed.
    • Gengar is the only Ghost-type Pokémon capable of Gigantamaxing.
    • Lapras is the only Ice-type Pokémon capable of Gigantamaxing.
    • Melmetal is the only Mythical Pokémon capable of Gigantamaxing.
    • Sandaconda is the only Ground-type Pokémon capable of Gigantamaxing.
  • Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, and Gengar are the only Pokémon who can both Gigantamax and Mega Evolve.
  • The Kanto First partner Pokémon (with the exception of Charizard) and the Galar First partner Pokémon are the only Gigantamax Pokémon who originally didn't have the Gigantamax Factor and can Gigantamax after The Isle of Armor Expansion Pass.
  • The Water-type has the most Gigantamax forms of any type, having 6.
    • In contrast to this, the Ground, Ice, and Ghost types all tie for the least Gigantamax forms, only having 1 each.
