Nanna

Leif, wherever you go, I shall follow... even to the ends of the continent.”
—Nanna to Leif in Genealogy of the Holy War

Nanna is a playable character from Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War and Fire Emblem: Thracia 776.

She is a child character in Genealogy of the Holy War and is the daughter of Lachesis, the younger sister of Diarmuid and a cousin of Ares. As a member of the noble family of Agustria's House Nordion, she possesses minor Hoðr blood.

Nanna's substitute character is Jeanne in Genealogy of the Holy War.

Profile

After Lachesis survived the Battle of Belhalla, she made her way to Leonster, where she gave birth to Nanna in the year 761. The following year, Thracia laid siege to Leonster, and Lachesis, along with Finn, Leif and Nanna, fled. A few years later, Lachesis left Nanna in Finn's care, setting out for Isaach in search of Diarmuid.

When Leif subsequently fled to the village of Fiana, Nanna accompanied him along with Finn. Here, she and Leif would be placed under the care of the village's leader Eyvel, growing up alongside Mareeta, Osian, Halvan, and Tanya.

Genealogy of the Holy War

Nanna first appears alongside Leif and Finn in Leonster at the start of Chapter 7, where they find themselves surrounded by hostile forces spearheaded by Bloom. Seliph's army manages to fight through the enemy forces in the Aed Desert to rendezvous with the trio, and Nanna is reunited with her brother Diarmuid.

After capturing Conote in the same chapter, Nanna can share a conversation with Ares, where she explains that Sigurd is not Eldigan's murderer.

After the war, if Nanna has been paired up, she will accompany her husband to his homeland. If she is not paired up, she will then return to Nordion with Ares and Diarmuid.

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776

Nanna first appears in Chapter 1, where she and Mareeta are captured by Raydrik of Munster when he raids Fiana in an attempt to find Leif.

Nanna is later reunited with Eyvel in Chapter 5, but under dire circumstances: The pair are trapped in an arena by Raydrik, forcefully pitted against Mareeta, who has gone berserk due to the influence of the Shadow Sword. Leif's army subsequently breaks into arena, but disaster strikes, with Mareeta recaptured and Eyvel petrified and taken away. Nanna is fortunately spared, and she joins Leif's army.

After Leif's army successfully secures control over Munster in Chapter 24, they embark on a mission to rescue Eyvel in Chapter 24x. Here, Sara uses the Kia Staff to undo Eyvel's petrification, reuniting Nanna with her.

Nanna will then go on to support Leif in his final battle against Veld in the Final Chapter, thereafter liberating Northern Thracia from the Grannvale Empire. Nanna will wed Leif thereafter, assisting him in the reconstruction of Leonster and the establishment of the New Kingdom of Thracia. Her kind and selfless nature eventually earns her the admiration of the general populace, and she is affectionately addressed as "Princess Nanna".

Personality

Nanna's characterization shifts between Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776.

In Genealogy of the Holy War, Nanna is portrayed as a headstrong and determined person, as shown through her assertiveness in urging Leif and Finn to abandon Leonster and seek cover in a nearby church. If Finn is her father, he even likens her to her mother Lachesis, who is similarly stubborn and strong-willed.

In Thracia 776, Nanna is markedly quieter and more reserved. This can immediately be seen in Chapter 1, where her capture by Raydrik sees her doing nothing to fight back, instead silently accepting her circumstances. In Chapter 5 she's seized by fear in the arena, heavily relying on Eyvel's protection to stay alive despite being armed herself. This is due to the fact that Thracia 776 occurs a year before Genealogy of the Holy War, and after having been somewhat sheltered until the start of the game and then gone thorough many hardships in it, she grew into a headstrong woman like her mother. This is confirmed by her actions towards Homer in his recruitment talk: when he tries to seduce her, rather than simply rejecting him or talking her way out of it, she slaps and berates him, which leads to him joining Leif's forces.

Regardless of parentage, Nanna is a solid unit. The simple utility of a mounted healer is quite invaluable, and her Hoðr blood means that her initially poor base stats will quickly cease to be a problem. Nanna can inherit A-rank swords at base, which makes her a good offensive unit, and thanks to her Charm skill, Nanna being anywhere near the frontlines provides her allies with a decent evasion and accuracy boost, which can stack with both her brother's Charm skill and Seliph's Leadership. She can even use the Return staff at base, which, if she has inherited the item, will allow her to immediately reunite Leif and Finn with the rest of the army (along with herself, if she has a Return Ring).

In terms of parents, Nanna's staff rank and Magic are both low, meaning that it is generally best to focus on her physical combat; she does not gain much from high Magic aside from slightly more effective healing and better damage with magic swords, and her natural bases and growths are not so low that she needs the boost. She notably lacks Pursuit, which is the main weak point in her combat kit, so a father which provides her with Pursuit is highly valued. Because of this, Beowolf is the most popular option for a father; not only is he an easy pairing to obtain, but he passes down the much-valued Pursuit, along with Charge and excellent physical growths. This will turn Nanna into a very solid and versatile cavalry unit, able to support her allies and take down enemies. Finn is an effective second option, passing down Miracle to make Nanna much safer on the frontlines, though this will deprive Finn of his lances in the second generation and can be difficult to obtain when Finn and Lachesis only share two chapters and no conversations. If the player is absolutely determined to focus on Nanna as a staff-user, then Claud is the only real option, as he will boost her staff rank to B, though this will make Diarmuid largely useless. Azelle makes for a good compromise - both children will still get Pursuit, and his Magic-boosting Fjalar blood will boost both children's use of Magic Swords, and a slight uptick to Nanna's staves.

Conversations

In Chapter 7, if Nanna speaks to Diarmuid, she will gain one point of Luck.

In Chapter 7, if Finn is Nanna's father, she may speak to him to get 5 points of Speed after Darna is captured.

In Chapter 8, after Conote is captured, Nanna may speak to Ares to reveal the truth about Eldigan to him, and she will receive two points of Strength and Defense.

In Chapter 10, Nanna may speak to Leif at any time for 100 love points and an added bonus of three points to her HP.

In the Final Chapter, if Nanna is in love with either Seliph, Leif, or Ares, she may speak to her lover. If her lover is Seliph, he will gain 3 points of HP, while if said lover is either Leif or Ares, he will gain 3 points of Defense.

Overall

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Coming from Genealogy of the Holy War, Nanna shares a similar rough start to Leif, with mediocre bases and underwhelming growths. However, what sets her apart is her unique utility—she is one of the few Thracia 776 units who can fight, heal, and provide support buffs, even if she doesn’t excel in any one area.

Nanna joins in Chapter 5, and while her combat stats aren’t great, she has a few unique tools that make her useful: the Earth Sword and Charm. The Earth Sword allows Nanna to deal magic-based damage and heal herself on hit. However, it is very heavy, causing major Attack Speed loss, making her vulnerable on enemy phase. Charm gives nearby allies a +10 Hit & Avoid bonus, which is especially useful in Chapter 7, where Nanna + Leif + Finn’s support bonuses make capturing Rumei much easier.

Once you reach Chapter 6, Nanna becomes mounted and can keep up with the frontlines. With more space to maneuver and slightly improved stats, using the Earth Sword becomes less risky, so she has an easier time contributing to the team. When she isn't using the Earth Sword, she is passively supporting your team through Charm.

While Nanna does have a staff rank, it is stuck at E and does not improve upon promotion. It takes too long for Nanna to reach A Staves, meaning that she misses out on Warp, Rescue, and even some mid-tier staves like Ensorcel. Amalda, for instance, has better staff utility out of the gate and can take over Nanna’s role later.

For casual players, giving Nanna the Wrath manual is a common strategy to improve her enemy phase. However, since most combat-heavy maps are indoors, she faces strong competition for Wrath from Linoan, who makes much better use of it due to her superior class and late-game contributions.

Overall, Nanna is a great example of a well-rounded unit, being good in everything, while not excelling at anything specific. She isn't exactly a terrible unit, but she doesn't stand out enough to be considered one of the best. That said, she is certainly worth using despite these flaws.

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.
Base Set

Nanna is a Book II Staff Cavalry unit with rather unimpressive stats save her decent Spd which was among the higher. Her mixed bulk is balanced, but on the lower end and her low Atk means that she has less healing value compared to others. As such, her main saving grace is her ease of access if intending on merging as her only competitors in this regard are Priscilla and Clarine when she was first introduced and later Ethlyn and Forrest. Nanna provides a few upsides due to the power of high movement for healing, but many new units outstrip her thanks to more optimized stats and in some cases a personal weapon. On a budget level, Nanna can perform decently enough to warrant a try.
Absorb allows Nanna to heal herself for 50% of the damage she deals. With only 7 Mt and her low attack, Nanna likely will not deal significant enough damage to justify its self-healing effect, even though it also gives 7 HP to allies within two spaces of her after combat. In addition to the staff damage reduction she needs to run either the Wrathful Staff refine to allow her to deal what damage she can or the Dazzling Staff refine to allow her to safely engage her foe.
Restore allows Nanna to neutralize any penalties on an ally she heals from stat debuffs or conditions like Gravity or Panic. Heavenly Light is a quick charging healing special that heals 10 HP to all of Nanna's allies, regardless of their current position on the map to her. Spd/Res 2 gives Nanna a flat +2 to her Spd and Res stats, her two strongest stats. Drive Def 2 provides +3 Def to allies within two spaces of Nanna during combat.

Counters

Nanna severely lacks enough Atk to make her an offensive threat, thus most decent wall units can soak any attempts at damage. Unless premium skill inheritances are taken into account, Nanna will struggle dealing damage or engaging safely on foes if she lacks the Wrathful/Dazzling Staff combination of skills. Her low Def also leaves her open to be heavily damaged by a slew of powerful physical units and several powerful threats have Spd so high, it immediately invalidates her one best stat. While her cavalry is a supportive boon for her, it also provides a notable weakness to a host of Cavalry effective weapons.

Skill Inheritance

Nanna's kit requires a near complete overhaul to better suit her stats. The fan coined "Razzle-Dazzle" is her best overall means of dealing meaningful damage on a larger scale. It does not matter which one is her refine or Skill B if either one is inheritable, but if neither of their Skill B versions are available, the Dazzling Refine should be taken over the Wrathful since the slight increase to her damage is minimal compared to the engagement safety of the Dazzling.
Pain gives Nanna splash damage to her attacks and in combination with Savage Blow on both her Skill C and Seal, she can deal up to 24 non-lethal damage to foes within two spaces of her target when attacking. Gravity also works to stifle enemy movement in order to better restrict movement and allow more capable allies to position themselves to counterattack. Windfire Balm is the best balm skill for scoring purposes in Arena Duel and for generally the best stats to give buffs to. Skill A can either go with Attack/Speed increasing skills like the Solo or Push variations for combat or go for Fortress Defense Resistance, foregoing her attack damage in exchange for more bulk in case she is ever attacked.

Etymology

In Norse mythology, Nanna is the wife of the god Baldr and the mother of the god Forseti.

Trivia

  • While it is commonly believed that Nanna and Diarmuid may have different fathers (Finn and Beowolf respectively), it is stated in Fire Emblem's 20th Anniversary Book that her biological father is whomever the player married Lachesis to, and that Finn is more of her adoptive father. Still, since Finn is among Lachesis' prospect lovers, there is the chance of him being her biological father.
  • Just like Fergus, Nanna was stated to be Beowolf's child in early versions of Nintendo's official website. The identity of her father was then concealed.
  • In Thracia 776, Nanna shares the same growths as Selphina.
  • Nanna shares her English Voice actor, Abby Trott, with Laegjarn in Heroes and Annette from Three Houses.
  • While Nanna is married to Leif in Thracia's ending, in the final events of Genealogy of Holy War, that happen chronologically after the Thracian war, she and Leif can have other partners.
  • Despite Thracia 776 claiming Nanna was born in the year Gran 761, Lachesis' married conversation with Naoise in Doorway to Destiny claims that both of their children have been born by then, in the year 760.
