Mia

“I understand if I lose to someone with better technique. When that happens, I can always hone my skills and work on getting more combat experience. If I lose, it's not because I'm a woman. It's because someone trained harder than me. And if that happens, I'll hone my skills and come back to beat them.”
—Mia, in her supports with Largo in Path of Radiance.

Mia is a playable character from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. She is one of the members of the Greil Mercenaries, and works as a sell-sword.

Profile

Mia is a sellsword originally from Begnion but was hired by Crimea to defend it against the invading Daein army. Mia was captured by Daein and was nearly sent to a prison camp if Greil had not gotten to her first and released her.

Path of Radiance

The Greil Mercenaries lead by Ike began their retreat to Gallia and encounter Mia. Mia informs them of her situation and, upon hearing that Ike is part of Greil Mercenaries, Mia decides to join Ike in the fight against Daein and to repay Greil for rescuing her earlier.

Radiant Dawn

Mia formally becomes a full fledged member of the Greil Mercenaries and is among the forces Ike brings with him when he is contracted by Bastian to rescue Lucia.

After the defeat of Ashera, Mia sets off on a journey around Tellius in search of new opponents, occasionally stopping by Greil's retreat to rest.

Personality

Mia can be described as energetic and quirky. She is obsessed when it comes to proving the strength of her mettle, a fact that surfaces prominently in her support conversations, where she will often run around and challenge the first person she sees to duels. Despite her eccentricities, she has a heart of gold, willing to lend her aid to people who need it. For instance, her supports with Ilyana sees her attempting to look after the mage when the latter is fatigued from her usual hunger spells. Also, one of her training sessions with Rhys has her ardently forbidding him from practicing with swords when she sees that doing so makes him ill. She seems to be a believer in divination as she sought a fortune teller with a notable reputation for a reading. She received word that she would have a rival "with white robes flowing in the breeze". Unfortunately, Mia would interpret this rival as Rhys since he was the only person associated to her at the time that matched the description, showing a bit of hot blooded enthusiasm without much consideration outside of a literal first-impression interpretation of a vague reading.

Mia is stalwartly opposed to the backdated viewpoint of women being unsuited for the battlefield, training rigorously every day to disprove this notion. This belief has had a major influence on her being quick to accuse male duelists of going easy on her or assuming that her prowess as a swordswoman is inferior due to her gender. This is proven through her supports with Largo, where she takes deep offense over the man suggesting that she is better suited to doing something domestic instead of taking to the battlefield with a sword in hand. Mia appreciates Ike for rescuing her and eventually decided to remain a part of the Greil Mercenaries after the Mad King War. Mia and Ike mutually respects each other's skills and prowess, with Mia appreciating that Ike always fights against her seriously when sparring and Ike appreciating that Mia is essentially the only person willing to spar with him in the first place due to his immense prowess.

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Mia joins relatively early on, and her high base speed practically guarantees she will be doubling all but the fastest enemies. However, she is held back by her relatively low Strength, as well as her bad class. She will often not do much damage to enemies even with 2 attacks. While a 40% growth is by no means bad, it's low enough where it has trouble salvaging her base, meaning she will continue to have lackluster attacking prowess throughout the game. It also doesn't help that she only starts with D Swords, meaning she will struggle to hit C by the time Zihark joins with the Killing Edge. It also means that the most powerful weapon she has access to, the Steel Sword, weighs her down by 5 points unless weight is forged off of one. This means that early on Mia will often have to choose between double attacking and doing a notable amount of damage per hit. Being locked to swords in general can be crippling in a game like Path of Radiance. Since most combat happens on enemy phase, the inability to retaliate on and kill units with magic, bows, hand axes, or javelins can make certain maps take much longer than necessary. Her damage output flaws can be mitigated through the use of an Energy Drop, the Adept skill, and/or the chapter 21 Brave Sword. However, considering Mia is not mounted and has no reliable 1-2 range, many will not consider her worth this investment.

Despite being inferior to Zihark and Stefan in a few stats, she does have one thing going for her - luck. Since luck increases crit rate, avoid, and reduces enemy crit chance, swordmasters are a class that benefits the most from it in FE9. Mia starts with luck 6 at level 6, Zihark with luck 6 at level 10 and worse growth, Stefan is held back by his abysmal luck of 5 and terrible growth, which makes him vulnerable to enemy crits. Luck is almost impossible to max out for a swordmaster, but in fixed mode when she was given all of the Ashera Icons she reached a respectable 26 luck. She will require a significant investment in stat boosters to max out her other stats and reach a decent HP, but with max skill, 26 luck, and Vague Katti she can reach a base crit chance of 64 and high avoid, making her an interesting unit to invest into for trial maps. Vantage gives her an ability to crit and kill an enemy before she is hit, and giving her Guard enhances her survivability further. Ranged attacks are still her weakness, however.

Mia's Strength and Defense growths are well balanced in Radiant Dawn, and her Skill, Speed and HP are by far her best stats. Her Luck is also decent, but due to the cap of 35 and the growth of 35% it will most likely not cap. She'll have an easy time capping HP, Skill, and Speed, giving her great Bonus Experience potential, allowing her to improve her already decent Strength and Defense. Curiously (and also somewhat funny) is that if she caps Defense as a Swordmaster, the +3 promotion bonus will cause it to be immediately capped as a Trueblade. This gives her inherent bonus experience potential as a Trueblade, and will cap HP soon after, and Speed and Skill following shortly after as well, allowing her to improve her Strength, Luck, and Resistance, which all have decent to high caps.

Overall, Mia, due to her high availability and high growths, is the best of the Trueblades, with a trained Edward or Zihark being her most prominent competition. Lucia usually is worse in every stat except Skill and Resistance in comparison to Mia, and the skill is only marginally higher. Mia can be brought into the Tower of Guidance and can wield the Vague Katti, and due to her dodging capabilities and decent durability, will be a useful asset throughout the game.

Base Set

Mia is a standard Sword Infantry unit from Book I that was among the first to serve as a template for the hyper-offensive playstyle that several are known for. Mia boasts a fantastic 32 base Atk and 40 Spd, the latter of which allows her to secure follow-up attacks and make full usage of Spd skills. Her mixed bulk is mediocre sitting at 66 physical and 63 magical. Overall, Mia is a fairly strong unit, even for a Book I unit, and works well with modern skills that capitalizes on her inherent strengths. Investing in her with such skills leads to a solid, reliable unit, though she unfortunately has competition with the likes of Ayra, Karla, and many other Sword Infantry units introduced after her that essentially performs the same role, albeit with different weapon effects and sometimes immediate access to premium skills without inheritance. Mia also does has a Resplendent Form, which gives her a bit of a boost to her performance.
Resolute Blade is essentially a Wo Dao that has base 16 Mt and gives her +10 damage when her special triggers. It also gives her a flat Atk +3 boost. Its later refine grants her bonus damage based off of 70% of the Spd difference between herself and her opponent if her Spd is higher than theirs. Given her blistering 40 Spd, there are more than enough units for her to inflict up to +20 damage to her attacks.
Luna allows Mia to ignore 50% of her foe's Def when it activates. Flashing Blade makes full usage of her high Spd and as long as she is at least 1 point higher in Spd than her foe, she accelerates her special cooldown per attack. Vantage allows Mia to counterattack before her foe if she is at or under 75% HP.

Counters

Mia is walled by high defense Blue units who carry the natural color advantage and can inflict heavy damage on her on retaliation or on initiation. Unless running Distant Counter, she is also very vulnerable to high damage mage units who obliterate her through her lower Res, especially blue ones. Guard-like skills are also a huge block to her as her special activations are a primary source of most of her damage.

Skill Inheritance

Mia's base kit synergizes with each other well out of the gate and her only empty slots are her Assist skill, which Reposition works great for the sheer power of its utility or high SP Assists like Rally+ skills for Arena scoring. Skill C can be filled with supportive Hone, Drive, Wave, and Smoke skills on a budget.
On a budget, Fury gives Mia a nice boost to her base stat at the cost of the recoil which can serve to synergize with both her base Vantage or inherit Desperation to boost her offensive turn pressure. Moonbow charges faster and leads to generally more damage output.
If looking to maximize Mia's Sword Infantry archetype builds, any Atk/Spd boosting Skill A like Attack Speed Solo increases her two best stats during combat or take Distant Counter to make her dual phase. Spurn and Close Call work fantastically on her given her high Spd and Null Follow-Up helps secure her follow-up that she generally has no problem getting. Skill C can also be filled with Time's Pulse to further accelerate her already high special recharge.

Meet Some of the Heroes

Harmonic Blades Mia
I've never seen anything like this... Two Heroes have crossed between worlds to fight together as one! Let's introduce today's Harmonized Hero, shall we?
This daring duo is made up of Mia, the rookie mercenary who's aiming for the top, and Luci—I-I mean...the mysterious masked swordsman who goes by the name of Marth!
They're both wearing swimsuits for the summer, and together, they're more radiant than the sun itself. And while you're checking out their attire, don't miss the flowers they're wearing in their hair!
I don't think this is the first time Mia has had Marth's back, either—in fact, I hear they've fought side by side in Tempest Trials before! Though they come from different worlds, they make a surprisingly good team!
Closely Associated Characters

Trivia

  • Mia's Radiant Dawn incarnation came in 16th place for females in the Fire Emblem Heroes Choose Your Legends popularity poll, with 8,946 votes. Her Path of Radiance incarnation came in 37th place for females, and had 4,408 votes.
  • Mia, alongside most of the Greil Mercenaries, is given a voice in a cutscene of Radiant Dawn. Alongside Micaiah and Rolf, she is voiced by Lani Minella.
    • Mia is the only one of these characters to retain Minella as a voice actress in Fire Emblem Heroes.
  • Throughout the Tellius series, Mia searches for her rival "clad in white", accusing several unlikely characters of being this person. Strangely enough, she never seems to take notice of Lucia, who serves in the same army as her in both games and is a Swordmaster in white garb.
  • Mia has cut supports with Marcia and Nephenee in the data for Path of Radiance.
  • In the North American version of Radiant Dawn, Mia's Introduction page erroneously states that she was rescued by Ike from prison when in actuality she was rescued by Greil. This error was not present in the Japanese version and was fixed in the PAL version.
  • In The Sacred Stones, Forde mentions that Kyle has a sister named Mia in their B support. However, neither character's name is Mia in the Japanese versions; Kyle's sister's name is Maia (マイア), while the Myrmidon from Tellius is named Wayu (ワユ).
  • Mia shares her second English voice actress, the late Philece Sampler, with The Binding Blade's Niime.
