Rath

“The battlefield is not a place for daydreaming.”
—Rath, in a support conversation with Lyn

Rath is a playable character in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade and father of Sue, a character in the sequel Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. He speaks only when the situation calls for it and is the son of the Silver Wolf, who is the chieftain of the Kutolah, a Sacaean tribe.

Profile

Before The Blazing Blade

As the son of the Silver Wolf, Rath was revered as the child with the most potential in the village. His achievements spread quickly through the village, even to Guy, who was never any good with a bow and spent most his time training his sword arm. Rath was banished from his village before the age of four, however, due to a prophecy that said he must leave the village to help "stop the burning". It is presumed that he fulfills this prophecy by joining Hector, Lyn and Eliwood's cause and helping to thwart Nergal's evil.

After leaving his village, Rath wandered the plains of Sacae for several years, always on the verge of starvation. The people of other tribes would laugh and ridicule him. Over time, he learned to no longer feel emotion, and was spared from the agonizing loneliness that he felt during his time wandering. Rath eventually began to work at the castle in Araphen, whose marquess was racist against Saceans.

Lyn's Story

On encountering Lyn's group in Chapter 6, Rath manages to save Castle Araphen with their aid. The marquess however, does not respect Lyn as a savior. Overhearing Marquess Araphen speaking down to Sacaeans while talking to himself, Rath leaves the service of Marquess Araphen and lends Lyn's party his aid. When the ordeal with Lundgren is over, he silently leaves the group.

Eliwood and Hector's Story

Rath will appear again in Chapter 21E/22H, where he is revealed to have taken up work as a mercenary in the service of House Ostia. He, alongside the mercenary troupe he is in, accompanies a group of soldiers on a mission to reinforce Eliwood, Hector and Lyn's joint army. Should Lyn be directed to speak to him, he will reveal his role as a sellsword, and goes on to suggest lending his aid to her, which she readily accepts. After the end of this mission, Rath will continue to stick with the army until Nergal and his morphs are defeated.

At the end of this journey, Rath will return home to his tribe in Sacae, where he is received with admiration and praise. Depending on his supports, he could eventually wed Lyn, whereupon the couple will have a daughter together named Sue, who appears as a playable character in The Binding Blade.

Personality

As a result of his banishment in the early years of his life, Rath developed a taciturn, withdrawn personality, preferring to keep to his own devices instead of interacting with others. This continues well into his eventual entry into the civilizations that exist beyond Sacae, where his skills as a mercenary are lauded, yet he is not known for being warm and sociable.

Rath is not completely devoid of emotions, however, as exemplified through his interactions with Lyn. Although his interactions with her may appear to be mostly unfeeling and lacking in genuine warmth, subtle hints point towards the feelings that he harbors, yet represses, for her. His re-appearance in Chapter 21E/22H, for one, sees Rath taking the initiative to offer aid to Lyn without being prompted, and he doesn't ask her for anything in return.

Overall

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Rath is probably the strongest unpromoted archer in The Blazing Blade, and an overall decent unit. Rath's Nomad class is mounted, meaning he has more movement than any other Bow user available and he can help out outside of combat by rescuing units. Rath has solid bases and decent growths- his base Speed is high enough that he will consistently double enemies, his Strength base & growth give him decent firepower, and his weaker defensive growths are only a small problem thanks to his high base HP & Defense.

Rath's combat abilities in Eliwood or Hector Mode will depend heavily on whether Lyn Mode is played. Rath rejoins the party much later than other Lyn Mode units, as he isn't available again until he is recruited in Chapter 21E/22H. His stats are still good enough to serve as a filler in some chapters regardless of whether Lyn Mode is played, but he will greatly benefit from the opportunity to gain some EXP, and when accounting for Lyn Mode Rath's solid bases and decent growths will allow him to function much better. Regardless of whether he goes through Lyn Mode, it's usually worth using an Orion's Bolt upon him early so that he can access swords & his strong promotion bonuses.

Upon promotion, Rath gains access to swords. This is a nice boon for Rath, as he will gain access to melee range attacking, making him a more versatile unit. However, the benefits of swords only give Rath minor advantages over other units. In a game in which most units can fight at 1-2 range using Javelins or Hand Axes, which are both quite strong weapons in this game, Rath is better off than purely sword-locked and purely bow-locked units, but he will never gain the incredibly powerful ability to counter enemies regardless of their distance. He might be able to use the Light Brand or Runesword for 1-2 range if a lot of attention is given to his sword rank, but he won't unlock these weapons until relatively late in the game, and unlike Javelins or Hand Axes these weapons do fixed magical damage, meaning that Rath can't clear massive enemy formations on enemy phases, which in the context of this game means that he is missing an important ability, especially on Hard Mode.

Overall Rath is a decent combat unit and can be a decent filler unit. He is in an odd situation; he can fight at melee range, he can fight at 2-3 range, but he cannot do 1-2 range. Missing out on this ability sounds minor, but it's one of the most important things that a unit can do in The Blazing Blade, meaning that Rath will often be relegated to rescuing units around and fighting only when the situation permits.

Meet Some of the Heroes

Wolf of Sacae Rath
Standing out with his cool, dispassionate looks, Rath hails from Sacae on the continent of Elibe. He's the son of the leader of the Kutolah, one of the three great tribes of the plains.
When Rath was only an infant, the diviner of the tribe foresaw an ill omen in his future—a dark flame that threatened to burn everything to ash. Rath was banished from the village, and from then on he traveled alone, looking for a way to avert the catastrophe.
Over the course of his travels, Rath grew into a strong young man. And then, one day, he encountered Lyn, a fellow nomad of Sacae, and was plunged into a battle against the darkness that threatened his world!
Rath doesn't talk much, and that's putting it lightly, but he's driven by a strong sense of conviction. And when it comes to fighting, he's like a powerful gale racing across the battlefield!

Etymology

Rath is a Sanskrit word meaning chariot or wagon, which could be from the fact that he is mounted on a horse.

Trivia

  • Rath's status and whereabouts during the events of The Binding Blade are unspecified. Because his daughter Sue is the only known survivor of their tribe's massacre, it is possible he died in the massacre itself, if not some time before.
