—Jaffar to Legault in a support conversation.
Jaffar is a playable character from Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. Known as the Angel of Death, he is an emotionless killer in the employ of Nergal until he is changed by the kindness of Nino, the first person he ever came to care for.
Profile
Jaffar was discovered by Nergal as an orphan, sleeping amongst a pile of dead bodies. Nergal took in the boy, impressed by his evident skill, and began to train him. At some point later, Jaffar was sent by Nergal to infiltrate the Black Fang, an infamous league of assassins. His natural talents, combined with Nergal's training, allowed him to rise through the group's ranks quickly. He eventually replaced Jerme, The Death Kite, as one of the Four Fangs, the most powerful members of the organization.
Jaffar is first seen in a cutscene in The Dread Isle (Eliwood's Chapter 18, Hector's Chapter 19). Ephidel, upon learning that a member of the Black Fang, Leila, was actually a spy for Ostia, summoned Jaffar to kill her for betraying the group. Ephidel then commanded Jaffar to leave her corpse in the forest for Eliwood's army to find.
Jaffar later subdued Lord Elbert at Nergal's command during his escape attempt in Dragon's Gate (Eliwood's Chapter 19, Hector's Chapter 20). During this time, Jaffar had a brief confrontation with Eliwood and his group, but he was ordered to go to Bern and await his next mission. The Four Fangs were later summoned by Sonia in Kinship's Bond (Eliwood's Chapter 21, Hector's Chapter 22) and were commanded to track down and kill Eliwood and his friends.
The turning point for Jaffar came when he met a young girl named Nino in Four-Fanged Offense. Nino was supposed to meet up with him after a mission, but then she found Jaffar hurt and bleeding badly, and had tended to his wounds when he passed out on the floor; for his part, Jaffar had seen Nino from afar sometimes, but they had never been face to face. When he came to his senses, Jaffar asked why Nino had spared him, remembering the Black Fang's code to kill the weak so that the strong may rise; she replied that, as a fellow Black Fang, she did not want him to die. This is the first time Jaffar felt emotions, and over time he began to care for Nino.
When Sonia had ordered Jaffar and Nino to assassinate Prince Zephiel secretly on behalf of his father, King Desmond of Bern, Sonia told Jaffar to stay behind for more details, telling him that after assassinating Prince Zephiel, he was to kill Nino so that the King would have a scapegoat upon which to blame the Prince's death. Jaffar openly wondered why Sonia would want to kill her own daughter, but ultimately told her it had nothing to do with him.
Though Jaffar and Nino infiltrate the Prince's manse, upon knocking out Prince Zephiel, he tells Nino it is time for her to do her part, but when she cannot bring herself to kill Prince Zephiel and closes her eyes preparing for Jaffar to kill her, he tells Nino to follow him, and that they are leaving. However, while they were attempting to flee the manse, Ursula spots them and Jaffar proceeds to fight her and her troops, telling Nino to run and that she deserves to live, refusing her offer to run with him and deciding to make a last stand to cover for her and protect Zephiel as well. If you recruit Nino, then she can talk to Jaffar and he joins the group at the end of the chapter, although some among the group (particularly Hector and Matthew) did not think he should be so quickly forgiven for all of the comrades he had killed (namely Leila).
When Jaffar accompanies Nino in her search for her mother Sonia and she confronts her mother and learns her origins, Jaffar defends her when Sonia sends Black Fang members after them both. Afterwards, he joins the group for the rest of the journey, so that he may atone for his sins.
Personality
For the majority of his life, Jaffar has displayed little to no emotion, carrying out his orders regardless of his target.
After joining Eliwood's group, Jaffar gradually displays human emotions in conversations with his allies. He holds special feelings for Nino who had especially moved him. His conversations with his former ally Legault and the ill-fated Matthew also cause his heart to waver.

Jaffar is a pre-promoted Assassin, and he comes with incredibly strong stats across the board, especially his Strength, Skill, and Speed. Jaffar will likely be the only Assassin the player gets in most Blazing Blade playthroughs, as Matthew and Legault are usually better left as Thieves so that they can take advantage of the ability to unlock doors & steal items. The Fell Contract used to promote Matthew and Legault is worth 25,000 gold, meaning that players going for ranks will want to avoid promoting either so that they can get a five-star Funds rank, and non-ranked players might prefer to just sell the Contract for more cash, since Matthew and Legault aren't great combat units.
Even if the player elects to promote one of the two thieves, Jaffar's incredible base stats means that he will be a stronger Assassin than either of the other two options. The Assassin class gets access to the Silencer ability, meaning that 50% of the time that Jaffar lands a critical hit, his attack will automatically kill. This may help Jaffar kill some bulkier enemies, but in most cases he is able to kill enemies with a regular crit anyways. Silencer doesn't work on bosses, so this trait is mostly a novelty that won't affect Jaffar's combat much. Jaffar can open chests, but not doors, using a Lockpick.
Despite his impressive stats, Jaffar is sword-locked. This means that Jaffar can't use Javelins or Hand Axes. He can access 1-2 range using the Light Brand or Runesword, and he's one of the best candidates to do so because of his great starting stats, but because both of those weapons do fixed magical damage Jaffar will usually have worse enemy phase damage output than lance and axe users. In addition, once these two weapons break, Jaffar won't have any 1-2 range; it may be worthwhile to use Hammerne to preserve one of these weapons if using Jaffar, ideally the Light Brand since it comes with 25 uses versus the Runesword's 15, meaning that using Hammerne on it will give Jaffar more time to fight at range. However, while this is a noteworthy drawback, Jaffar's great base stats still allow him to be used effectively, even if he is slightly less capable than units with access to better weapon types.

Base Set
Jaffar is a subpar Book I Colorless Dagger infantry unit who has solid enough Spd for a unit of his time at 33 to score double attacks, but on a 26 base Atk, he is surprisingly lacking in raw damage on hit. Even his mixed bulk is middling at 66 physical and 63 magical scores. Overall Jaffar lacks a lot of punch to make him a threatening unit outright, but with a proper build, he can surprisingly become a formidable indirect damage dealer. His Resplendent form also gives him slightly better base stats and more investments like Dragonflowers can bring him to a respectable range to combat modern units.
Deathly Dagger inflicts a Def/Res-7 debuff on that targeted foe until the end of their next action and also inflicts 7 non-lethal damage after combat, similar to a second tier Poison Strike skill. It can soften an opponent significantly as a result, but due to the single target focus, it is mainly to diminish a singular target only. Its later Weapon Refinery increased the range of the debuff and non-lethal damage to all foes within two spaces of his attack target, becoming a combination of a standard refined dagger and a Pain+ Staff. Its unique effect also allows him to pick on Tome users as they cannot counterattack if he initiates combat on them, making them prime targets to begin inflicting heavy splash damage.
Glimmer boosts his damage dealt by 50%, which can give him a modest boost. Life and Death gives him a flat +5 Atk/Spd increase as the cost of dropping his Def/Res by the same amount, focusing these points on his stronger stats. Threaten Speed inflicts Spd-5 on foes after action, stacking on his dagger debuffs.
Counters
Jaffar does not have many pure counters save Raventome users like both Mage Robins, Sophia, and Lyon who can force a color disadvantage and push it with Triangle Adept to the point that he deals minimal damage to them. Even with his stacking after combat damage, he is unlikely to outright deal with them even with their counterattacking disabled. Physically bulky units usually can ignore his damage and can counter attack with Distant Counter such as Hector, Fallen Hardin, and Zelgius while Dragon units like Nowi, Myrrh, and Tiki can target his lower Res. Unless he can inflict the Speed penalty onto his enemy, most speed oriented units can completely smash through his low bulk.
Skill Inheritance
Jaffar needs skills that boosts his offense or otherwise impact his opponents so he can deal more damage. His low attack is better suited to have Moonbow as the Def reduction will likely lead to more meaningful damage than Glimmer. Reposition is the usual unit positioning skill though as a ranged unit, Draw Back is another worthy option.
Chill Defense can open opportunities for him to soften an opponent for his own meaningful damage increase while Desperation allows him to secure his potential follow-up attacks against foes who can counterattack him. If using the later, Fury can give him similar stat boosts as Life and Death while also giving him the recoil to get into Desperation range safely. Skill C is flexible enough to fill with skills from Smoke skills, namely Speed Smoke to ensure he gets his follow-up attacks naturally or supportive options like Hone and Drive skills, especially the Joint variations.
Another worthy contender to make him an incredible chip damage unit is to put Poison Strike on his Skill B and Savage Blow as his Skill C as collectively his refined dagger with these skills deals 20 chip damage to his targeted foe and 17 to enemies two spaces near his target. If he adds a Poison Strike Seal, this becomes a 30 chip to the target, or if its a Savage Blow seal, he deals 24 to foes around his target, leaving the preference to the player on which output is better.

Etymology
The name 'Jaffar' means 'stream' in Arabic.
There is a city in modern-day Israel named Jaffa, or 'Yafo'. It was an ancient Phoenician city later ruled at various times by the Israelites, Arabs, and European Crusaders. Jaffa was predominately populated by Arabs until the creation of the state of Israel in 1948 and is currently a part of the modern-day city Tel-Aviv.
Trivia
- The overworld and battle sprites of the assassins in GBA games are all based on Jaffar's attire.
- The colors of his battle sprite are default palettes for Assassins in the GBA games.
- Jaffar's death quote of "And so it ends," is later said by Rikard as a portion of his death quote.
- There is a grammatical error in his S and A rank battle history quote. "...Good, or so I here." should be "hear".
- In Heroes, Jaffar shares his English voice actor, Walden James, with Subaki and Jagen.
- In Heroes, there is an error in his injured portrait; the curve of his daggers' blades nearly becomes angular, relative to the consistent arc formed by the weapons in his other portraits, as well as the sheaths in all four- including that of the injured portrait.
