Asbel

“We swore to each other that we would live and die together, Lord Leif... Was that an empty vow? I still remember it. And I've chosen to aid you as much as I can.”
— Asbel to Leif

Asbel is a playable character in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. Hailing from the free city of Hrest, he is a 15 year old Mage who is Ced's pupil and one of Leif's close friends. Asbel is also the exclusive wielder of the Grafcalibur tome.

Profile

Before Thracia 776

Asbel first met and befriended Leif 10 years before the events of Thracia 776. Leif, who was seeking respite from the Empire, came to live in Hrest under the protection of Asbel's father, who was the city's bishop at the time. For two years, Leif remained hidden in the city until the citizens themselves informed the Empire of his whereabouts.

Leif was forced to flee to Tarrah thereafter, and Asbel fled along with him. Asbel's father remained behind in Tarrah to buy the prince and his son time to escape, but was subsequently captured and executed. Asbel was separated from Leif three years prior to Thracia 776 when the prince escaped to Fiana with Finn and Nanna.

Despite this, Asbel persisted in searching for Leif, never forgetting the pledge he had made with the prince to reclaim Thracia with him. After losing track of Leif's whereabouts, however, he ended up in Munster.

At some point after entering Munster, Asbel met Ced, who taught him the basics of magic, including how to wield the powerful Grafcalibur tome. Asbel subsequently joined Ced as a member of the Magi Squad, aiding them in their quest to oppose the Empire while also keeping his eyes peeled for any signs of Leif.

Thracia 776

Asbel first appears in Chapter 4x, where he assists Ced in releasing the children captured by the Loptr Church and locked up in the Munster dungeon. When he learns that Leif had been imprisoned in the same castle, as well, Asbel hastens to find his friend, leaving Ced after promising to join up with him after the war ends.

Asbel then goes on to continue supporting Leif in his cause to liberate Northern Thracia from the Grannvale Empire. He remains by Leif's side thereafter, seeing the Liberation Wars to their end. Asbel returns home to Hrest afterwards, taking his father's place as bishop and subsequently earning the title of Great Sage across Thracia.

Personality

Asbel is characterized by a determined, loyal, and plucky attitude. This is shown through his refusal to give up on looking for Leif despite losing contact with him for several years. His loyalty especially shines through on reuniting with his friend, as he reasserts his resolve to reclaim Thracia with Leif.

Overall

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Asbel is undoubtedly one of the strongest units in Thracia 776. He is not only a strong combatant, but also hands down Thracia 776's single best bosskiller. He starts out with low bases in Chapter 4x, but has a powerful personal weapon in Grafcalibur. His growths are also surpisingly high for Thracia 776, with a blistering high 75% speed growth that is further accentuated when you give him the Ced Scroll. Training him is not only necessary, but is actually easy because Chapter 5 heavily relies on Asbel steamrolling enemies on enemy phase.

It's also heavily recommended to have Asbel promoted by Chapter 7, as he reaps the insane bonuses of Sages. Between his massive speed growth and promotion bonuses, it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that Asbel has capped Magic, Skill and Speed this early in the game, making him one of the fastest units in the game. He also gains Staves upon promotion, which can occasionally be helpful, but he is likely not reaching Warp usage anytime soon.

As stated earlier, Asbel is one of the best bosskillers in the game, as while Thrones grant bosses +10 Defense, they do not increase Magic, making them easy picking from Asbel to kill. One of the most notable examples of this is in Chapter 8x, where Gomes, who is normally a challenge to any newcomer with his massive stats and lack of an armor-effective weakness, is completely trivialized by Asbel. It is important to note that Asbel needs to be somewhat careful when facing Gomes, as he is one of the only bosses that he cannot outspeed and as such has to rely on critting once to kill him.

If the player is worried about using Grafcalibur too much, it's important to note that in Chapters 4 and 4x, the player likely has a ton of Fire and Thunder tomes before Asbel joins. As such, the player can use those tomes against generics to conserve Grafcalibur uses for bosskilling. Then in Chapter 10, the player can buy Wind tomes, which are extremely light and have 10% crit. In the lategame, Asbel likely has enough Weapon Experience to use the long ranged Blizzard tome, which can also set enemy units to sleep. This is especially valuable in the endgame, where some of the bosses are made much easier by putting them to sleep and capturing them.

Overall, Asbel is a phenomenal unit. He is easily one of the strongest Magic users in the game, and one of the strongest Magic users in the entire series. There is no playthrough that doesn't benefit from using Asbel, and he is an invaluable asset in any playthrough.

Trivia

  • According to the unused NPC data in Thracia 776, a playable character known as Gunna was originally created to be Asbel's grandfather. He is a Bishop of the free city Hrest and mentions Asbel in his death quote. Despite this, Asbel's ending only states that he returned to Hrest to take his father's place as the bishop of the city, but does not mention his grandfather.
  • Asbel shares his Japanese voice actress, Rie Kugimiya with Heroes' Laevatein.
