—The general incantation when Engaging with an Emblem.
Engage is a game mechanic introduced in Fire Emblem Engage.
Overview
Engaging with an Emblem Ring or Bracelet signifies the synchronization of a unit and the Emblem housed in the ring. The power held by the Emblem is unleashed, transforming the user's clothing and hair color to resemble the Emblem's. Engaging grants a plethora of new powers to the unit including new skills, special weapons, and potent Engage Attacks while in this state.
Engaging is only fully possible once a Divine Dragon has blessed the Emblem Ring as an unenergized Emblem Ring or an Emblem Ring corrupted by the Fell Dragon Sombron cannot draw out the full power of the ring.
In-Game Mechanics
All units who enter battle with an Emblem Ring/Bracelet have access to the Engage command. The equipped unit begins batte with their Engage meter completely charged. Once Engaged, the unit transforms, gaining immediate benefits such as stats, combat skills, Engage Weapons, and a unique Engage Attack. Engaging also allows units immediate access to applicable weapon types, even if their innate class does not allow so. There are no restrictions on who can equip any of the Emblem Rings/Bracelets, though due to the fact that only one copy of each Ring/Bracelet exists, only one unit can Engage with one particular Emblem at a time.
Engaging lasts three Turns by default and upon the start of the fourth turn, the state immediately ends. Units may recharge their Engage Meter whenever the unit engages in battle, regardless of which unit initiates combat, gaining one charge for each per initiation. Units must engage in six different combats in order to fully charge the Meter. Some weapons, such as Libération, accelerate the Engage Meter charge. Units who invest in deepening their Bond with a Emblem can increase the number of active Engage turns to four at Level 11 and reduce the number of combats needed to charge to five at Level 20.
Engage Attacks are a unique special command for a unit to use once per Engage. Contrary to the name, not all Engage Attacks are attacking commands as some provide utilities like Great Sacrifice and Goddess Dance. Some Emblem rings also have unique Engage Skills which are also unique commands. Unlike Engage attacks, these do not have special animations. Some Engage Attacks and Engage Skills have unique additional effects depending on the Unit Type of the user.
DLC Emblem Bracelets have special, stronger Engage Attacks called a Bond Link if the wielder uses the Engage Attack when adjacent to the Emblem Ring housing the Emblem from the same title. The following Bond Links are performed when the following Engage Rings/Bracelets are adjacent to one another:
- Ring of the Hero-King - Bracelet of the Ancestor
- Ring of the Lady of the Plains - Bracelet of the Brash General
- Ring of the Radiant Hero - Bracelet of the Strategist
- Ring of the Princess Exalt - Bracelet of the Shepherd Exalt
- Ring of the Crux of Fate - Bracelet of the Doting Sister
- Ring of the Instructor - Bracelet of the Three Houses
