Lifis

Perne: You haven't changed at all since you were a kid, have you? Have you at least learned not to wet your bed?!
Lifis: C-Come on, Perne... That was a long time ago.”
Perne and Lifis talking

Lifis is a playable character in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. He is the 25 year old leader of the Lifis Pirates, a group who wreaks havoc on the eastern coasts of Thracia.

Profile

Lifis is first named in Chapter 2, where he is identified as the leader of the pirates responsible for attacking the villages lining the eastern coasts of Thracia.

Should Leif and the Freeblades of Fiana succeed in saving all the houses in this chapter, they will launch an investigation into Lifis and his pirates, traveling to their island in Chapter 2x to lay siege to their hideout.

Lifis makes his first appearance in Chapter 2x, which opens on him reaching an agreement with the Tahran priestess Safy. In exchange for Safy becoming his wife, Lifis lies about agreeing to fight for the people of Tahra. He then proceeds to spearhead the defense against the Freeblades of Fiana's assault, but is eventually defeated and captured.

Initially planned to be turned over to the villagers whom he had terrorized, he is saved on Safy's behest. Lifis subsequently joins the Freeblades of Fiana, although he fully intends to escape and also turn Leif over to Loptous when the chance presents itself.

When Leif and Eyvel are later captured by Raydrik in Chapter 3, Lifis is apprehended alongside them.

Imprisoned alongside two bandits in the dungeons of Munster in Chapter 4, Lifis strikes up a deal with them, using his credentials as a famous bandit to trick them into pledging their loyalty to him. He is eventually freed from imprisonment when members of the Magi Squad storm the dungeons to break Leif out of jail. Continuing to accompany Leif, Lifis will join up with the Freeblades of Fiana again.

When Leif's army later passes through Dakia Forest and defeats Colho and Salem in Chapter 12, they discover the hideout of the Dandelion Bandits.

If Lifis is chosen to infiltrate the hideout in Chapter 12x, the chapter will open on him expressing discomfort and reluctance to enter the place, stating that there is a man whom he does not want to meet. This man turns out to be Perne, a conversation shared between the two revealing that they had grown up in the same village. Despite being teased for his bed-wetting habit, Lifis is able to convince Perne to join Leif's cause.

Lifis then goes on to continue supporting Leif in his cause to liberate Northern Thracia from the Grannvale Empire. Earning a government post after the war, Lifis is credited for leading the Kelves Garrison Forces to wipe out the pirate outposts surrounding Thracia. He is said to disappear without a trace thereafter.

If Lifis dies or is not recruited, he will become the Deadlord Porcus.

Personality

Though introduced as a callous man with both bravado and genuine thieving skills as the leader of a pirate gang, Lifis is, in reality, a coward. He lies to protect himself, and uses this same brand of deceit to keep himself out of battle and even to win the affections of Safy.

Lifis is a complicated unit, as it’s difficult to determine whether he is worth long-term investment. However, in the early and midgame, he provides exceptional utility, making him one of the most valuable units in Thracia 776 despite eventually being outclassed.

To recruit Lifis, you must save all villages in Chapter 2, granting access to Chapter 2x, where he appears as an enemy. Fortunately, this is an easy task, even for beginners. You also need to capture him and avoid releasing him before completing the chapter. Since he is unarmed, this is a trivial requirement.

Once recruited, Lifis immediately proves useful, boasting 7 movement, 2 Leadership Stars, and strong indoor mobility. In Chapter 3, he is essential for rescuing the children, as he can traverse indoor terrain without penalties and carry them to safety with ease.

Lifis’ most crucial role comes during the Munster Escape sequence (Chapters 4–6). While he starts imprisoned alongside Leif, he quickly stands out as the best Thief compared to Lara.

  • Weapon Stealing – Lifis has enough Build to steal tomes from enemy Mages, pacifying them and making enemy phases significantly safer. This also stockpiles extra Fire and Thunder tomes for Asvel, allowing him to preserve Grafcalibur for boss-killing.
  • Staff Stealing – Lifis can steal Physic Staves from enemy Bishops, which is crucial for training Warpers (Safy, Salem, and Sleuf) to A-rank Staves faster.
  • Door Unlocking – As a Thief, Lifis helps open critical paths, making the escape maps smoother.

Unlike Lara, who has low Build, Lifis can steal a wider variety of weapons and items, giving him far superior midgame Thief utility.

From Chapter 6 onward, Lifis’ impact begins to fade, but he still performs key Thief duties, such as:

  • Chapter 8x – Unlocking doors and stealing treasure.
  • Chapter 10 – Stealing a Stamina Potion from an enemy Thief.
  • Chapter 11 – Unlocking the doors leading to Kempf’s room, depending on the player’s strategy.

While his role becomes less central, he remains useful for door and chest unlocking, as well as the occasional item theft.

Lifis' biggest downside is that he is completely outclassed by Perne once the latter joins.

  • Perne is a promoted Thief with significantly better stats, movement, and Build.
  • Perne can steal weapons more reliably, making Build investment in Lifis largely unnecessary.
  • In fast playthroughs, Lifis' ability to steal weapons (such as Rapiers or Fred’s and Olwen’s weapons in Chapter 10) is mostly irrelevant due to warp-skipping strategies.

By the time Perne joins, Lifis is effectively retired, but his contributions before this point are undeniable.

Lifis is an exceptionally valuable early-game unit, providing critical Thief utility when it matters most. While his mid-to-late-game role diminishes and he is eventually rendered obsolete by Perne, he leaves such a strong impact in the earlygame and Munster escape maps that he remains one of the better units in the game.

His Build allows him to steal weapons, his mobility and unlocking ability make him indispensable indoors, and his Physic Staff theft is crucial for setting up powerful Warp strategies later. Even if he isn't a long-term unit, his early contributions make him irreplaceable in the first third of the game.

Meet Some of the Heroes

Terror of Iz Lifis
Lifis was once a pirate who had the area around the village of Iz on the continent of Jugdral at his mercy. I suppose the pirate festival must have rekindled his old love for buccaneering, because he's here to steal the show!
Though I have to say, this outfit makes it look like he's more concerned with gathering treasure rather than being a swashbuckling pirate. Still, I think the look suits him!
Lifis has quite literally taken the helm, as he's carrying a ship's wheel as his weapon. Maybe it represents his desire to leave the humble surroundings of the Iz coast and venture into the oceans beyond?
Lifis seems happy to be returning to the pirate's life after so long, but I hope he doesn't get too carried away! I don't want to have to get Leif and Eyvel on his case again!
Closely Associated Characters
Leif Quan's son. He was hiding in Fiana but rose up after an attack by imperial forces. He defeated Lifis during his days of tormenting the villagers of Iz.
Eyvel Mistress of Fiana, leader of the Freeblades. Took in Leif and company when they fled the Grannvale Empire. Worked with Leif to defeat Lifis.

Conversations

Pre-battle

(If deployed in Chapter 12x)

  • Leif: Is something amiss, Lifis? You look terribly pale.
  • Lifis: Ergh... Look, Prince, here's the thing... If it's all the same to you, can I just sit this one out? Can't somebody else fill in for me?
  • August: ...You wouldn't happen to be acquainted with these bandits, would you? You mentioned you lived near here when you were a child.
  • Lifis: Heh, well, about that... There's just this one guy that I, uh, don't get along with too well. If he's here... Look, just leave me out of this one, OK? Pretty please?
  • August: Is that it? Bah, what a petty reason... Report to the front lines at once!
  • Lifis: C'mon, don't make me beg! Just this once? Please? Pretty please with sugar on top?
  • August: The prince has spoken! You have your orders!

Talk with Perne

In Chapter 12x

  • Lifis: Ah, hell... Not good!
  • Perne: What in the...? Lifis, is that you? You old dog! How long's it been?
  • Lifis: Y-Yeah, uh, I've been gone a while... Er, Perne... sir...
  • Perne: Hah! You haven't changed a bit, kiddo! You at least learn to stop wetting the bed, junior?
  • Lifis: H-Hey, gimme some credit, wouldja? Let's not talk too much about ancient history!
  • Perne: Really? Cuz I remember you bein' the biggest crybaby in the village, an' we're just talkin' here, right? Not gonna cry about it, are you? Ah, seems like it was just yesterday that all the kids would chase you 'round the village an' beat you somethin' fierce... But you're all grown-up now, an' you're not gonna start cryin' about it, right?
  • Lifis: ...You were always the ringleader. Every time, you were the one that started it, Perne...
  • Perne: Hm? You say somethin', kiddo?
  • Lifis: N-No, nothing. Nothing at all...
  • Perne: Oh, that's right, you joined up with this "Liberation Army," right? Been hearin' rumors about 'em. Looks like they keep you pretty busy, huh? Seems mighty interestin'. Well, Li'l Lifis, looks like it's your lucky day! I'm in the mood to join up with 'em an' keep an eye on you. Where's your leader at?
  • Lifis: What?!
  • Perne: Hey, you got a problem with that?! I'm all ears, Li'l Lifis!
  • Lifis: ...No, there's no problem...
  • Perne: It'll be just like the old days! You'll see!
  • Lifis: Ugh... It's happening all over again... I'm stuck with the bumpkin born from Loptous' own bosom...
  • Perne: Hey, you feelin' OK there, little buddy? You're lookin' pretty pale.
  • Lifis: Huh? Oh, uh, I am? Uh, I must've... caught a cold. Just now. Yeah, that's it! A cold. Ahahaha...
  • Perne: Huh...?

(If Troude has not been killed/captured)

  • Lifis: Oh, Perne? While you're in such a generous mood, could you do something about that mercenary? He's givin' my people trouble.
  • Perne: Hm? Oh, you mean Troude? Leave it to me! Trude is one of my best men. I'll talk to him before he gets himself killed.

Ending

Lifis - The Shy Thief (シャイな盗賊, Shaina tōzoku)
Lifis was one of the many to earn a post as a government official, and served as one for a short time before vanishing. During his time in office, the Kerberos garrison wiped out the pirates still hiding in the Corsair Isles and other nearby islands. After that resounding victory, Lifis simply disappeared from the pages of history.

Trivia

  • Lifis will become a Deadlord if he is not recruited or dead. The backstory behind this transformation is never explained.
  • In the novelization for Thracia 776, after the war, Lifis traveled to the continent of Archanea and established the country of Archanea, making him Adrah. This is difficult to reconcile with the canon of the games, as the founding of Archanea is set roughly hundreds of years after the events of Thracia 776.
