—Altina's plea to Ashera
Altina is a non-playable character in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. She is one of Ashera's Three Heroes and the founder of Begnion as well as the first wielder of both Ragnell and Alondite.
Profile
About 780 years before the beginning of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, a great war was waged between the two goddesses of Tellius: Ashera and Yune. One of the strongest warriors under Ashera's command, Altina was chosen to lead the war against Yune, alongside Soan and Dheginsea. To compensate for being the sole Beorc among the three and aid, Ashera blessed Altina's swords, which would be known as the most powerful swords in Tellius: The golden blade Ragnell and the silver sword Alondite. Together with Dheginsea and Soan, Yune's forces were defeated and the Goddess of Chaos was sealed into a medallion to prevent future wars while Ashera went into slumber and Altina sought to achieve this on behalf of all beorc as promised by their pact.
Things were seemingly going as intended at first, as Altina founded Begnion to be a place where both Laguz and Beorc could co-exist, serving as its first queen while marrying Lehran, eventually giving birth to a daughter, Meshua, who they and their friends believed would become a symbol of peace between the two races, as Laguz-Beorc couples existed before, but conceiving a child together was unheard of at the time.
However, when Lehran lost all of his Laguz abilities after Meshua was born, this news caused great turmoil among them, who believed that this development would harm relations between the two races, and could even have lead to Meshua's death. At Lehran's request, Altina covered up the incident along with others, under the pretense of him having died in an accident, and denied any relations he had with Meshua. She then re-married and raised their daughter as a Beorc born of her new husband.
Unbeknownst to them, Lehran's communion with the goddess would eventually resurface in Altina's granddaughter Yoram, granted by having his bloodline. Successfully predicting the coming of a great famine in Begnion, she was hailed for her ability to hear the voice of the goddess and became the first of Begnion's apostles, unaware of the true origins of this power, as it led to the reorganization of Begnion into an empire. It also caused a rumor to spread that Altina is the only person capable of awakening Yune through the Galdr of Release. However, this is proven to be false, as the galdr can only be sung by the firstborn of each generation of her descendants. Such confusion likely came about due to Altina's own name becoming the surname of her lineage, although very few in Begnion were ever aware of this fact.
Personality
Altina's personality is mostly unknown since she's just a background character, but it can be guessed that she is very devoted to the Goddess and strongly believes that Beorc and Laguz could live together in harmony. She loves Lehran very much and was willing to accept his request of covering up the fact that he lost his powers by faking his death and negate about him having any relationship with their daughter. Considering that she was chosen to be one of Ashera's Three Heroes, there's no doubt that Altina is a very skilled warrior, and a charismatic leader as she was able to found and rule Begnion.
Some personality traits can be guessed by her quotes in Fire Emblem: Heroes. Altina is a very serious person, telling Kiran to not joke too much. She also shows her devotion to her friends, asking if by any chance they are here. Altina's love for Lehran is emphasized, admiring his kindness and singing a song he used to sing. Despite her composure, she can get a bit flustered if she's found singing, but she regains it very quickly. She also seems to have very strong motherly instincts; when she meets her descendant Sanaki in one of Heroes' Christmas Events, Altina is very happy and immediately takes her under her wing, saying, among several things, that she'd like to "hold [her] and comfort [her], as a mother does her beloved child"
She's also a fan of hot baths, always taking one after a battle.

Base Set
Altina immediately entered the battlefield with impressive Atk and decent overall bulk especially as a Sword Flier unit. A few months later, she won the A Hero Rises 3 event, thus became a free unit for all players of Heroes, making her an easily accessible and powerful asset to all players to use. As an Astra Mythic Hero who boasts Atk Mythic Effect, she is a strong Aether Raids unit during Astra seasons and incredibly useful for most PVE modes. While her Spd is low, and often a point of contention for some of the most successful units in Heroes, it works to her favor mainly due to her powerful build that works around that.
She wields Ragnell·Alondite, a special equip that allows her to equip both Ragnell and Alondite at the same time, though this is merely an aesthetic effect and does not bestow her the ability to dual wield two different weapons simultaneously. It does decrease her Spd by 5, bringing her base Spd to 15 and her flaw to 12, but she instantly trades this off with the ability to not only counterattack at range, but also gains a brave attack regardless of turn phase, making her incredibly hard hitting, and thus she should be dealt with completely as much as possible rather than chipping away at her. Her weapon refine grants her Atk/Res+5 and accelerates her special cooldown if either her foe initiates combat or if her foe is over 75% HP at the start of combat. Altina can keep her Special up in every round as a result, further allowing her to demolish her foes.
Her kit defines a very particular role as a baiting unit who can take hits from enemies and retaliate, but can also start off a map as an aggressive offensive unit. She has two unique skills, the first of which is her special Twin Blades, which is a slightly weaker form of Iceberg but disables the enemy's ability to use damage shaving skills like Spurn or units who have weapons who do so, like Fomortiis. As such, she can pierce through a bevy of units who rely on these skills to contribute to their longevity.
Ashera's Chosen not only negates her flier weakness, but also grants her Ask/Def +6 during combat if she is either next to a dragon/beast unit or not adjacent to any allies, allowing her to meld perfectly onto dragon/beast teams or as a powerful solo frontline unit. While the former lets her mesh well into most teams in general, the latter can cause some disruption on beast teams who can lose their transformation if they do not carry a beast transformation condition override skill. Its advanced form adds the condition of granting its effects if the foe is 75% HP or more at the start of combat. The boost becomes +9 to her four core stats and if her Res is greater than her foe's, she can deal up to 70% of the stat difference (maximizing at 7) and reduces damage taken from attacks and area-of-effect specials depending on the difference between the two x4, maximizing at a 40% reduction of damage, making Altina extremely hardy.
Her remaining skills are Vantage, which prioritizes her attacks during enemies who initiate on her when she is under 75% health, and Attack Defense Oath, which boosts her Atk/Def by 5 if she starts her turn next to an ally, bringing her to a base 53 Atk and 35 Def if positioned correctly. With the conditions Ashera's Chosen and Atk/Def Oath met, Altina can reach a hefty base 59 Atk who can double enemies during the enemy turns while having a base physical bulk of 83 and magical bulk of 77, more than enough to survive a singular hit from most enemies before unleashing two powerful attacks. Her base kit alone makes her a potent ally and a dangerous enemy if she is not properly engaged, thus caution must be taken when building teams against her. This is especially since outright attempting to nuke her will likely not come to pass and lead to that units death. Altina later gained Attack Defense Hold, inflicting Atk/Def-4 on foes within three spaces of her during combat.
Counters
Altina was incredibly strong in her introductory days and she has gotten significantly stronger since her Legendary Refine. She is very reliant on getting herself into Vantage range so she can seal off any opportunities for her foe to get the jump on her. Some units who can cleanly kill her on their own while not in Vantage range includes Legendary Deirdre Ullr, and Legendary Female Shez, the latter two are capable of running Deadeye and Lethality to remove her damage reduction Ashera's Chosen. Stifling out her Special Activation also helps to reduce her ability to overpower high physical bulk units through Twin Blades makes Guard and Special Fighter great skills to empower strong units like Brave Hector, which helps when she is in Vantage range. Hardy Bearing removes her priority change of Vantage. Finally, Dazzling Staff, Windsweep, Firesweep weapons allow units to completely remove her ability to counterattack, opening some units like Legendary Female Byleth to deal with her. Weapons that can inflict the debuff that removes counterattacking in general, such as a Flash staff or Nifl's Frostbite Breath can set her up for an ally to dispatch.
Skill Inheritance
Altina's new refined kit requires no real changes other than filling her empty Support Skill, which Reposition performs nicely.

Base Set
Altina is accompanied by her descendant Sanaki for her Winter form. While they are technically from the same world, they are a Harmonized Hero rather than a Duo Hero. Since Altina's base form is available to all players, Winter Altina shares many of the same strengths aside from the fact that she is an infantry unit rather than a flying unit. Winter Altina's has a great base 40 Atk and all around solid bulk, scoring 79 physical bulk and 81 magical bulk. Her Spd remains a low point, sitting at a measly 18, but like her original form, her weapon in particular remedies this. By virtue of being a Harmonized Hero, Winter Altina has immense capabilities, especially when used with other fellow Tellius series units and especially for Resonant Battles.
Winter Altina still wields Ragnell·Alondite and retains the same effect, meaning that while she loses 5 Spd, bringing her down to neutral 13, she can counterattack at any range and will always perform immediate double attacks like a Brave Weapon, even if the foe initiates combat, so long as the foe does not have a skill that denies follow-ups. As such, Altina can unleash truly devastating damage.
While her base kit lacks Vantage like her original form, her Harmonized Skill covers this. When activated, Winter Altina and all her allies from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn on the map gain a Vantage effect. For Altina in particular, this makes her even more so reminiscent of her original with one particular difference. Unlike normal Vantage, the Harmonized Vantage effect does not require her to be under a certain HP threshold. It can be used to save a unit who failed to eliminate a foe by giving them combat priority to score the final hit upon the foe's attempt to counterattack. The only downside is that the skill can only be used once and thus the player must take careful consideration when choosing to activate the effect.
While she does not have her base form's unique Ashera's Chosen skill, she has her own unique Special Twin Blades, which is a slightly weaker form of Iceberg, taking 40% of her strong 39 Res and adds it as additional damage and disables the enemy's ability to use damage shaving skills or from weapons like Urvan and Hrist.
Attack Resistance Unity grants Winter Altina Atk/Res +5 if she is within two spaces of an ally and if she has suffered a penalty to her Atk and/or Res, she instead gains a bonus equal to x2 the penalty she is currently suffering from each stat being calculated separately. As such, Winter Altina does not mind taking a penalty to those stats as it will ultimately make her stronger. Null C-Disrupt neutralizes any skill that would prevent her from performing a counterattack like Dazzling Staffs, Windsweep, and Firesweep weapons. Attack Resistance Oath grants Winter Altina an Atk/Res+5 bonus if she starts her turn next to an ally.
Counters
As a Red unit, Winter Altina's natural weakness is going to be bulky blue units, especially those who can hit hard like Effie, Brave Dimitri, and Forsyth. Brave Hector in particular is a strong counter given his immensely bloated Maltet refine. With her immensely low Spd, this also means that she is extremely susceptible to double attacks and even some of the slowest units can easily double attack her so long as they have at least 18 Spd against a neutral Spd Winter Altina. Winter Altina's threat of Vantage priority is only accessible in the Player's hands, so facing an enemy Altina will not have this threat in place. While Winter Altina has Null C-Disrupt in her base kit, players may choose other skills and replace it with stronger offensive skills, meaning that she becomes vulnerable to Dazzling Staff, Windsweep, and Firesweep weapons once she removes the skill.
Skill Inheritance
Winter Altina's base kit is set for success and only needs to fill her Assist skill, namely Reposition as its general application is widely considered to be the best for units like her, though one could choose other high SP skills for the sake of Arena scoring.
One of Winter Altina's strengths over her original is that her Infantry status gives her a host of new skills to play around with, like her native Null C-Disrupt or skills like Time's Pulse and Special Spiral. She can also benefit from Infantry skills of her allies like Infantry Pulse.

Etymology
The name 'Altina' evokes the Latin verb alo alere alui altum ('altum' is the past participle) which as a verb means 'to grow, support, rear, feed' and as an adjectival participle (altus, a, um) it means "high" or "deep".
In the Chronicle of Fredegar, Altina was said to be the mother of Frankish king Merovech, whom she had with a mythical sea creature called "Quinotaur" (a five horned bull with a shark fin).
Trivia
- In Heroes, Altina shares her English voice actor, Krizia Bajos, with Igrene.
- In Heroes, She also shares her Japanese voice actress, Miho Miyagawa, with Titania.
- Altina is the second non-enemy NPC character added to become playable in Heroes. She is the first lore character who does not make a direct appearance in her native game to become a playable character in Heroes.
- In Heroes, Altina is the first character to dual wield two separate weapons, though in-game data has the two as a singular weapon skill. Either by inheriting weapons or showcasing them in the Aether Resort Armory, she will wield two copies of the weapon into battle. Even legendary weapons like Durandal or the Sword of the Creator in the Aether Resort Armory will have her equipped with two copies of the sword.
- Due to lacking any kind of artwork in Radiant Dawn, Altina's icon in Choose Your Legends 5 is her portrait from Heroes.
