—Ewan in a support conversation with Saleh
Ewan is a playable character in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. He is Saleh's student, the younger brother of Tethys, and part of Gerik's troop.
Profile
Born in Jehanna, Ewan is a sage-in-training with much potential, according to Saleh. He is the third and final Trainee unit, more exactly a Pupil.
In Eirika's route, Ewan is seen in Carcino, where Pablo starts a coup and attempts to find and kill both Innes and Klimt. Tethys has Ewan stay in the local inn until the battle subsides, much to his disappointment. After Pablo and his army is routed from Carcino, Ewan introduces himself to Eirika and offers her a way into Caer Pelyn, which she accepts.
On the way, they run into an abandoned fortress, which has been overrun by monsters. Ewan attempts to participate in the battle, but is told by either Innes or his sister to stay out of the battle, which annoys him. After disposing of the monsters in the fortress, they reach Caer Pelyn, though monsters quickly attack it. Ewan is chased by a Revenant, though he manages to escape by entering a house. He later joins the party as a permanent member upon visiting the house he is hiding in.
On Ephraim's route, Ewan has Saleh drop him off at Taizel so he can speak to Marisa. He heads into an inn to find out where Marisa is located. Upon visiting him, he joins Ephraim's forces so he can speak to Marisa. If he does so, Ewan tells Marisa that the mercenary guild had a mix-up and asks her to join Ephraim's group so they can find Gerik, which she agrees to. If Ewan speaks to Saleh in Scorched Sand, he will be relieved to see his teacher again.
Personality
Ewan is quick-witted, excitable, and enjoys playing practical jokes on Saleh. He also appears to enjoy brain teasers and riddles, as shown in his support conversations with Ross. He is troublesome and keeps causing accidents which Saleh does not like; one time he "accidentally" threw Saleh's magic tome into a river. Also, in a support conversation with Tethys, she gets him to admit shaving half of a man's mustache off, and putting a frog in another man's boot.
His conversations with Dozla show that Ewan is a daydreamer, as he thinks about creating "flying coaches" and a communication device for everyone to use (as only mages can use them) in the near future, something which Dozla both encourages and supports.

Ewan joins midway through the game as a level 1 Pupil, a trainee class, with very poor stats. Like the other trainees, Ewan is an underleveled unit that will require a lot of favoritism to catch up to the rest of the party. Ewan often ends up benched, as he joins after much of the playable cast, but by virtue of being a trainee he is an interesting unit if the player is willing to pour effort into him.
Take extreme care while training Ewan initially- as a Pupil he will be extremely weak. Make sure to set up kills for him & be prepared to shield him with other units or Rescue him away after attacking, as many enemies at this point will kill Ewan in one round. Assuming that the player isn't interested in grinding on the world map or in the Tower of Valni, using Ewan will necessitate carefully setting up kills, and may be frustrating as any attack can be fatal.
Once he reaches level 10, Ewan will start a dialogue with the player at the start of the chapter after he reaches this level, in which he gets the option of one of three promotion paths: he can become a Mage, a Dark Mage, or, if the player has already beaten their copy of Sacred Stones at least once, he can become a "super trainee", remaining a Pupil but technically "promoting" into a base class.
The Mage path has the advantage of retaining Ewan's Anima rank, potentially allowing him to use higher-rank Anima tomes like Elfire and Thunder, improving his offense immediately. Upon reaching promotion level, Ewan can then become a Mage Knight or a Sage. Mage Knight offers Ewan 7 move and mounted status, while Sage gives him access to Light magic. If the player is planning on playing through the post-game Creature Campaign, Sage will be a better pick due to its higher stat caps, but if not planning to play this campaign Mage Knight's superior move and rescuing utility will probably be more valuable. Both classes are good options, and share D rank Staff access allowing Ewan to heal and provide other staff support.
As a Shaman, Ewan loses his Anima rank, instead starting with D rank Dark magic. Alongside Knoll Ewan is one of only two possible Dark magic users in Sacred Stones. Dark Magic is decent. Nosferatu is an interesting option, Luna may allow Ewan to pierce some high-Resistance enemies, and Eclipse gives him the ability to halve enemy HP at distance. One drawback of Dark tomes for Ewan is weight; he will lose 1 point of speed to Flux as a Shaman, and after promoting he will still lose a lot of speed to most Dark tomes, with Nosferatu costing a promoted Ewan 5 speed. However, he will still be able to one-round most enemies with Flux alone, and some heavier tomes can be used to one-shot.
A Shaman Ewan can promote into either a Summoner or a Druid. As a Druid, Ewan regains his Anima rank and also receives E staves. This will broaden his range of offensive options, and give him a bit more flexibility to use tomes like Fire for extra hit or Thunder for crit. Summoner grants Ewan E staves and the ability to summon phantoms. Both are solid options, with Druid being preferable for a combat-focused Ewan and Summoner being best if early promoting Ewan & planning to transition him into using staves & summoning to support the team. Once he reaches either class, Ewan will usually have sufficient stats to function well regardless of role.
Ewan's third "secret" class option is the Super Trainee route, only accessible if the copy of Sacred Stones being played has been beaten at least once. Upon reaching Level 10 in his trainee class, Ewan can also reclass into Pupil instead of Mage or Shaman. This gives him 1 point of move and some stat gains. Once he reaches level 10 again he can use a guiding ring to either become a Sage or yet another version of Pupil, colloquially called the Super Pupil. As a Super Pupil Ewan gains solid stat gains, a point of move, and access to all three types of magic, making him the only Sacred Stones unit capable of wielding all three types. This is an interesting utility, but as a Super Pupil Ewan gets very little Con and doesn't get staff access, meaning that most of the tomes available will weigh Ewan down so much as to endanger him. Apart from being an interesting promotion path, it's not really advisable to make Ewan into a Super Pupil- his other options are generally more compelling, especially since they fix his low Con.
Overall, Ewan is not a good unit- it takes a lot of effort to train him and by the time he arrives, the player will have access to several other mages, all of whom will be better than Ewan even if untrained. For those who want to use him, though, Ewan can become a solid mage with a lot of flexibility, and the player can slot him into whatever role they need from a mage. Whether or not to use Ewan will come down to what the player wants out of their run. Training him can be seen as a fun challenge, but if one's goal is to beat the game quickly or as easily as possible, Ewan is among the worst units in the game.

Etymology
'Ewan' is an anglicized form of the name 'Eoin' which is Irish for 'born of the yew tree'. Yews are long-lived poisonous evergreens which have come to connotate both death and immortality.
The Yuan Dynasty, which began when Kublai Khan proclaimed himself emperor of China, were the successors to the Mongol empire started by Genghis Khan.
Trivia
- Ewan is one of the very few characters in Fire Emblem who can actually lose weapon rank when he promotes, as promoting him from Pupil to Shaman will result in the loss of his Anima magic proficiency.
