Algol

“Go, my children! Make your master proud! And do it quickly. I am needed elsewhere... But I promise to linger long enough to see them suffer... Heh heh...”
—Algol to his Risen army in Death's Embrace

Algol is a boss character and secondary antagonist in Fire Emblem Awakening. He is a Grimleal priest and bandit.

Biography

Algol is tasked by Validar to prevent Chrom and his forces from escaping Plegia Castle. Despite the numerous traps set in place, Algol is killed in battle.

In an Outrealm set for the Death's Embrace DLC, Algol manages to create an army of powerful Risen after constructing a massive temple to fuel his experiments, using magic to ensure that they would be loyal to him even though he was responsible for their demise. The Risen spawned from them would be sent to attack nearby villages, killing the weak but sparing the strong to be converted into more Risen. When Chrom and the Shepherds arrive at the Outrealm, they obtain a lead from a nearby village about his temple. When they arrive, they discover some of the villagers converted into Risen before Algol emerges. Claiming to create assassins, Algol states that living people hurt — they felt fear, pain, and could be easily swayed, whereas his Risen assassins would not. He then proceeds to showcase his finest work, a particularly powerful Risen Chief.

Algol proceeds to send his Risen assassins against the Shepherds, hoping that his creations would make him proud and ordering them to finish the job quickly as he was needed elsewhere. If the player does not defeat him in ten turns, Algol realizes the Shepherds are stronger than they look and flees, abandoning his temple. If the player kills him, Algol, claiming that he decides who dies, begs for mercy in his dying breath.

Etymology

Algol is the name of a trinary star system in Perseus. It is Arabic for 'winking demon', and is named for the fact that β Persei B regularly eclipses β Persei A, so that the star appears to periodically brighten and dim.

Trivia

  • Algol's pre-battle quote may be a reference to the game Impossible: Mission. When the player first starts the game, the villain says "Another visitor. Stay awhile. Stay forever!"
  • He shares the same portrait with Morristan.
  • Algol is one of the few generic bosses in the game to actually make more then one appearance without creating a new boss that uses the same Boss portrait.
  • Though Algol is proficient in magic in the main game, he does not have any magic stat in his DLC fight despite being responsible for creating a Risen army.
