Freyr

“No need...young mortal... Within dreams...all things are possible. But you are here with a purpose. Allow me to answer your question.”
—Freyr

Freyr is a character from Book IV of Fire Emblem Heroes. He is a Vanir, and king of Ljósálfheimr, the realm of dreams. He is the god who governs dreams. He wishes for all to live in tranquility.

Profile

"Just a minute! The following section contains spoilers. Viewing it will cost a lot. Are you prepared to pay for it?"

At the end of Chapter 4, Freyr is kidnapped by his sister Freyja, with the help of Plumeria and Triandra, since he gave Gullinkambi, his only defense against Freyja and the Dökkálfr, to the Order of Heroes.

In Chapter 9, Freyja forces the necklace Brísingamen onto Freyr, allowing her to have access to both the power of Dreams and Nightmare, and as a result become omnipotent.

In Chapter 10, Freyr blames himself for letting her sister Freyja steal all of the power of dreams so that the Order of Heroes will never escape Dökkálfheimr. When Freyja finally found them and was about to kill the Order of Heroes, Freyr was left with no choice: In order to weaken his sister by barring her the access the power of Dreams, they must kill him, which they reluctantly complied with. He then tells his sister that he was glad to see her face, even though his words were not good enough to reach her. And then, he succumbs to his wounds, angering Freyja over her brother's loss.

"End of spoilers. It's a pleasure doing business with you!"

Personality

Freyr is a compassionate and caring man who cares for his sister, Freyja. He tries to convince his sister to change her views about humans, but fails.

Freyr cares deeply for humans, as seen in a certain situation in Chapter 10, and when he felt guilty for turning humans into ljósálfr and dökkálfr.

Meet Some of the Heroes

Dream-King Freyr
Freyr is the gentle and compassionate king of Ljósálfheimr. He's originally from Vanaheimr, the realm of light, and is also known as the god of plenty!
After leaving Vanaheimr, Freyr established Ljósálfheimr together with his sister, Freyja. But their kingdom nearly perished when humans forgot about dreams...
Hoping to save the world of dreams and soothe the hearts of people, Freyr lifted some human children out of unfortunate circumstances and transformed them into álfar. He felt conflicted about intervening so directly in people's fates, though.
After our encounter with Freyja, Freyr sacrificed himself to save us. I hope he'll now be able to make the rest of his dreams come true in Askr!

Meet Some of the Heroes

Estival Dreams Freyr
Someone pinch me, because I must be dreaming! Not only is Freyr, the Dream-King of Ljósálfheimr here, but most surprising of all, he's wearing a swimsuit!
It's a strong look, and certainly in stark contrast to his usual appearance. Still, while he might have ditched his robes in favor of a significantly lighter look, he's still wearing a cape to demonstrate his regal authority. I guess that must be a king thing...
And what's that in his hand? Why, it's a cool, refreshing pineapple juice! I see it has two straws, so he must be meaning to share it with his sister, Freyja!
Freyr typically looks calm and serene, but I think I can see a little smile on his face. I hope he and Freyja have a wonderful time at the beach!
Closely Associated Characters
Freyja Lady of Nightmare who rules over Dökkálfheimr. What will she dream up under the summer sun? Freyr's younger sister.

Etymology

In Norse Mythology, Freyr is the god of peace, fertility, wealth, rain, summer and sunshine. He's the ruler of Alfheim, or Ljósálfheimr, and the older twin brother of Freyja. During Ragnarok, Freyr will battle Surtr and fall to the flame giant's hand.

Trivia

  • Due to the circumstance of his boss fight, Freyr was the first Heroes original character who did not have any skills to utilize in their base form prior to his release.
    • He also lacked attack and special artwork, initially only having his neutral and damaged artwork present in the game files.
    • While present in the game files, his special activation lines could not be heard under any circumstances in game until his release years later.
  • Freyr's beast form closely resembles the Markhor species of goat, whose most noticeable feature is their long, spiraling, drill-like horns. Curiously, Ibex goats (the caprines from which Freyja's beast form seems to take after the most) are believed to be closely related to Markhor goats.
  • Freyr shares his English voice actor, Jason Marnocha, with Genealogy of the Holy War's Travant as he appears in Heroes as well as Erwin from Three Hopes.
  • According to the Fire Emblem Heroes Character Illustrations Vol. 2 book, Freyr stands at 192cm (or about 6'4).
