Lyre

“What!? No way! That stuffy know-it-all doesn't need it! Look at me! I'm so tiny and helpless, I need all the help I can get. You wouldn't want me to get hurt, would you?”
—Lyre in a conversation with Ranulf and Kyza

Lyre is a playable character in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. Lyre has an older twin sister named Lethe.

Profile

Lyre is a Cat Laguz of the Beast tribe, as well as the younger twin sister of Lethe. She possibly has feelings for Ranulf. She hates war and fighting, but joins the army to be with Lethe and Ranulf because she wants to fight alongside her sister and could not bear to see her die.

Lyre is first introduced in Chapter 3-1 where she helps Lethe and Mist pass out poisoned food to knock out enemy guards, and then serves as an NPC ally unit along with Lethe for that chapter. She officially joins as a playable character in chapter 3-4.

Personality

Despite being Lethe's twin sister, Lyre is nearly her polar opposite. She is playful and outgoing, counter to Lethe's more serious and stern nature. When introduced, she is also more at ease with Beorc than Lethe initially is in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.

However, Lyre seems to be the pettier of the two sisters. In a Base Conversation, she claims that Shinon is lucky that she did not claw the smile off his face after an altercation between the two and Gatrie. In a different info conversation, she begs Ranulf to give her the gift he offers instead of giving it to Kyza, her excuse being that she is the smaller and more helpless of the two.

Overall

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

One look at Lyre's base stats will definitely make many players raise an eyebrow; she is inferior in every way to her sister, Lethe, and gets lower availability for not being present in Part II. While she gets better growth rates in some areas, she sadly gains EXP just as slowly as her sister, and lags behind Lethe so much, that even when reaching a similar level (level 21), Lyre will most likely still be inferior to her, making Lyre's one defining trait of being a Laguz growth unit pretty difficult to defend. Bonus EXP is also a difficult proposition, but growing a Laguz unit through this process is always less expensive than a Beorc equivalent since they need half as many level to reach their stat caps and take about as much Bexp per level as Beorcs of equivalent level, while the Laguz unit has on average two seraph robes of HP over the Beorc equivalent.

Lyre's problems are similar to Lethe's but amplified with even lower base stats, while not being able to contribute in any part of the game with her bases. To give an idea, she has similar attack power to Mist at base (8 Strength) with her Florete, sharing similar Strength growth rate, but Lyre gains EXP much slower, is stuck to 1 Range, has lower availability (and Mist can easily get a lead through the first three chapters), and has to deal with cats' very quick transformation gauge - skirmisher gauge, but which refills quickly in human form and the player has plenty ways to refill the gauge both transformed and in human form like olivi grass and in human form attacking for 0 damage with magic cards. Of course, Mist cannot double nearly as reliably, but Mist's primary function being to heal and not attack, just about any player can see the issue with Lyre.

She will very quickly lose her Speed lead on the enemy, becoming unable to double if you never used her, and will always deal pretty low damage to them if you don't use the Bexp to 99% and level up with blossom strategy to get 5+ stats per level up on top of base camp Bexp spd/skl/(lck/HP) level ups. Upon joining the team, there are even enemies that Lyre will only deal 1 or 2 damage against, but a single energy drops lets her deal 4 damage in NM to 3-4 generals, which is pretty close to Mia's damage at base.

Overall, Lyre is considered one of the worst units of the game, and rightfully so. She might be rather accurate and quick, but it doesn't mean anything when her damage output is negligible to non-existent against her enemies with no easy way of fixing it outside of using invaluable stat boosters (which won't completely fix her) which don't really have much competition for among the GMs who either want speedwings or more levels to ram cap every relevant stat, and her base stats being so far behind, during a part of the game where she has to fight for a deployment slot with the less desirable members of the GMs and Mordecai/Lethe, and with Ranulf being forced deployed in Part III when available, a much better Cat Laguz - although no one prevents you from using more than 1, if you really want to, it's not like GMs are lacking in experience, you can raise a 10 units team quite easily to t3 Beorc and lv 30 Laguz just in p3 and Laguz take less Bexp than Beorcs because they need less levels to cap their stats at t3 Laguz caps, like cats having as much damage at capped str and S strike as Trueblades have with the SS rank sword midway through part 4 endgame.

As for the absence of ranged weapons, while it is annoying, Mia and Nephenee, the direct competition of Lyre and Lethe in stat distribution, ORKO exactly 1 enemy type with it, sages. With 18 strength, Nephenee needs a short spear to ORKO a 3-3 sage, with a single point of strength lower she would miss the ORKO, so the 2 range doesn't change much to their performance when most of their relevant combat is done in melee with forged weapons until the very end of part 3 where you can finally forge javelins and hand axes to get a little more Might than short spears and short axes with more accuracy, but by then enemies start to get promoted to special classes and their bulk skyrockets, pretty much negating the benefit of having stronger 1-2 range weapons. Overall, Haar and Titania are the only GMs with enough strength to reliably ORKO with buyable 1-2 range weapons in part 3 and snowball in part 4 with their level advantage from parts 2 and 3.

With all this, Lyre is certainly bottom 2 playable Laguz, but she is salvageable thanks to Radiant Dawn's mechanics and structure and investing into her will not be disappointing if you go through with it (although you really should use the blossom 99 strategy to optimize her level ups and give her an energy drop and dragonshield if you don't want to suffer with her base strength and defense and get her to 13 speed in 2 Bexp level ups so that she is guaranteed to double almost ebery enemy in her join chapter, with 14 after levelling up with blossom to double even high end swordmasters, something than Nephenee is borderline on doing even with her speed capped in tier 2). Try getting HP/skl/spd/lck and at least one of str/def/res, it will considerably reduce her Bexp cost in the long run to reach her caps. If only she was available in 3-5 to build strike rank and gain another blossom level...

Meet Some of the Heroes

Lap Cat of Luxury Lyre
We've got a special guest coming to celebrate the New Year! Here's Lyre, a cat warrior from Gallia, and she's wearing a special kimono for the celebrations!
You might remember her twin sister, Lethe, who previously came to celebrate the New Year in Askr. Lyre's kimono is a lot like the one Lethe wore, but with a whole new color scheme!
That doll she's brought with her is called a shishimai, and it's used as part of a traditional New Year's lion dance. That band around its head looks a little familiar... Is that supposed to be Ranulf?
Lyre has graced the start of the year with a truly gorgeous outfit, and seeing her vibrant look makes me think we'll have a bright year ahead. Maybe this is the year she'll finally catch Ranulf's eye!

Etymology

The lyre (lyra) is a musical instrument from Ancient Greece. It is said to have been invented by Hermes, messenger of the gods, though it is probably more often associated with the mythical poet Orpheus, master of the lyre.

In Greek mythology, Orpheus of the lyre wandered into the underworld of Hades, in grief over the loss of his wife. There, it is said in some stories, that he had to cross the rivers of the underworld, Styx and Lethe.

Trivia

  • Lyre and Kyza are both mentioned in a support conversation in Path of Radiance between Ranulf and Lethe.
  • Lyre shares her English voice actress, Kelly Baskin, with Letizia.
