Camus

“So long as Grust continues to support Dolhr's ambitions, it does not matter what I know or think. I am a knight; I have a duty to fight for my motherland's glory till the very end.”
—Camus to Nyna in Chapter 20 of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon.

His king decides to ally with Dolhr, and despite his sense of honor and integrity, he obeys his country and fights against Marth. He is said to be the most able warrior alive.

Profile

War of Shadows

When Grust forged an alliance with Dolhr, he did not protest, unlike General Lorenz. When Nyna was sent into the Sable Order's custody, and when Dolhr ordered for her execution, Camus took her to Aurelis so that Hardin could protect her. When Archanea was looted, one of the Three Regalia, Gradivus, was given to Camus. Unfortunately, for incurring the wrath of Medeus by helping Nyna escape, he was put on a short leash. When Nyna explained all these events to Marth, he knew she wished for Camus to be spared should they ever face him in battle. Camus eventually faced Marth's army where Marth attempted to persuade Camus into joining his cause. Despite Camus knowing that Marth's army was the just one in the battle, his unwavering loyalty to his country prevented him from leaving his position. Even with Nyna's protests to convince Camus to fight against Dolhr, Camus reluctantly continues to remain loyal to his country to the bitter end. In the end, Camus is seemingly killed in battle, much to Marth and Nyna's regret.

Gaiden/Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

In reality, he survived the battle and was washed ashore to Rigel in Valentia two years before the game's events. Without any memories of his past life, he was nursed back to health by Tatiana, a Rigelian saint whom he would later fall in love with. He was named "Ezekiel", Zeke for short by Emperor Rudolf, and forged a common trust with the Emperor and rose to become a high ranking general in the Rigelian army due to his sheer strength in battle. Before the war started, Rudolf told Zeke to look for a boy with a mark on his hand. He ordered Zeke to follow this boy as the boy would be destined to save all of Valentia. He opposed the war with Zofia but nevertheless followed orders. When fellow Rigelian commander, Jerome, disobeyed the Emperor's orders by committing raids against villages, such as Rigel Village, Zeke attempted to stop him. However, this led to Tatiana being captured by Jerome's fellow traitor, Nuibaba, in order to force him to fight for them.

Should Alm's army kill Nuibaba, Tatiana is rescued and brought into his forces. Upon seeing Tatiana among Alm's forces, Camus immediately turns on Jerome's army. Zeke thanks Alm for saving his beloved, but states that he refuses to fight against Rudolf whom he owes a great debt to. However, when Zeke noticed a mark on Alm's left hand, he leaves the Rigel army and joins Alm's army. After the war, Zeke lived a happy life with Tatiana. He recovered all of his memories as Camus, but he chose to keep this revelation to himself and vowed never to tell her of his own dark past.

War of Heroes

However, his happy life was put on hold when he received news of Hardin's ascension to the throne, subsequent fall to madness, and the appointment of the corrupt General Lang to rule over the occupied Grust. Donning a mask from Conrad and going under the alias of Sirius, he returned to Archanea to stop the madness. He first appeared to Ogma when the latter was protecting the Grustian royal children Yuliya and Jubelo from Macedon's Vikings, and is asked to join the Altean army fighting Lang. While he notes that he is not promising anything, he joins the army once the Vikings are defeated. During the war, when confronted by Belf, a former Sable Knight, who saw through the guise and identified Sirius as Camus. He explains his reasoning for hiding his identity: The revelation that he survived would incite an insurrection of Grust, with him serving as its symbol, which would be unaffordable in the war effort.

Later on, due to his true identity, he was able to snap Nyna out of her mind control from Medeus despite denying to her that he is Camus. She protests, but he states that she is tired and should return to Marth's side, followed by an apology which she overhears. After the end of the war, Camus left Archanea without another word to anyone except for Nyna, whom he told that he was returning to someone across the sea who was awaiting his return.

Personality

Camus is a well respected knight of Grust and is renown for his unwavering loyalty to it. Despite his moral code telling him that Grust's actions are wrong during the War of Shadows, Camus' fealty keeps him honor bound to fight for it until the bitter end. As a result, despite clearly showing no malice or true hostility towards Marth during their confrontation, he refused to join and chose to die in service to Grust.

As Zeke, Camus lost all of his memories, but retained his skill and most importantly his honorable personality. His skills earned him an easy place at Rudolf's forces and was even tasked with allying with an individual who bore a brand that would supposedly save Valentia. Though unsure of the purpose, he swore to uphold this tasks which ironically resulted in him meeting Alm, the leader of the Deliverance seeking to end Rudolf's ambitions. Though conflicted by the fact that the person Rudolf tasked him to find was fighting against him, he chose to honor Rudolf's mission and fought for Alm.

Deep down, Camus is a caring soldier not only towards his nation, but also to certain other individuals. In particular, Nyna and Tatiana are two women he bonded with during his story. He assisted Nyna in escaping the Dolhr Empire's execution, the first an only time he ever betrayed his nation's intentions. Later, during his battle against Marth, Nyna attempted to sway him into joining her cause. Despite his lingering affection for her, he bitterly refused her in lieu of his code and simply bid her farewell, recalling their time together fondly.

Due to being nursed by Tatiana, the first person he met after losing his memories, under his Zeke alias, Zeke grew fond of the Rigelian priestess. Tatiana became a critical Achilles Heel for him as her capture by Nuibaba forced him to cooperate with Jerome despite detesting him during their alliance. Upon learning of her rescue by Alm, Zeke immediately was able to turn on Jerome with Alm's aid. During their later conversations, Tatiana is pained over the thought of him recalling his memories. Zeke assures her that he would stay by her side from then on out. Eventually he does regain his lost memories, but chooses to keep her blissfully in the dark and kept his word to always stay by his side. Later when the War of Heroes started, he returned briefly to Archanea to fight, but chose to keep his identity a secret. While he has an encounter with Nyna, he simply vanished after the war and returned to Valentia to remain by Tatiana's side as promised.

Camus is easily one of the hardest bosses in Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, standing out heavily in a roster full of fairly simple opponents. Most of this is due to his signature Gradivus, which is not only powerful, but also abnormally light (giving Camus 13 attack speed) and a 1-2 range weapon (making chipping him at range extremely risky). Camus doubles many characters in the roster, particularly those attempting to wield heavy weapons against him; in particular, he's one of the few people who can double a base-level Wendell. With high HP and Defense, backed up by his castle gate's defenses, he can also stay alive for a very long time. A level-capped Marth with Mercurius can outmatch him, but even then, his victory probably won't be assured unless he's been given defensive statboosters.

Zeke is a high-end Pre-Promoted unit that Alm can recruit near the end of his route. He starts with average to above average stats in everything but Luck and Resistance, and has excellent growth in everything except for Strength, which is average(and is offset by the fact that he starts with high base Strength). If choosing to level Zeke up, he will wind up very close to Mathilda in overall power. He is one of the best characters in the game, and he can hold his own as soon as the player recruit him.

Sirius tends to mark a turning point in any Mystery of the Emblem playthrough; along with Ogma and Palla, he represents a massive infusion of power into the player's army. Sirius's base stats are roundly excellent, significantly outclassing Arran, and his growths are some of the best in the game, even without Astral Shards. He should be one of the stronger units in the player's army, especially since his XP gain is not slowed for being promoted, due to his high mobility and statline. Sirius will suffer later in the game, as later maps do not favor his class as much, being primarily indoors or terrain-heavy. Even off his horse, though, Sirius's pure statline makes him a competent warrior. He may also want some method of allaying his low base Luck. In general, though, he will not be impeded much in the final chapter.

New Mystery has upped the quality of enemies for Sirius to face, making him less able to stomp the game, but Sirius has some new tricks of his own to keep level. As before, he joins very early on as a prepromoted Paladin with generally high stats and growths all-around, such that he stays competent throughout the game if regularly used. However, he has also gained a number of small benefits: buffs to his stats, further buffs to his already high growths, and tweaks to his Paladin class, the largest being the removal of dismounting and the ability to wield lances and swords while on his horse. At the time he joins, he is likely to be the strongest unit in the army, barring an early-promoted Palla. As before, Sirius has rather low Luck, and may face a small crit chance from standard enemies, but this can actually have its tactical benefits, as it will cause them to favor targeting him.

One significant change for Sirius is reclassing. As a prepromote with two very high weapon ranks, Sirius is an excellent abuser of reclassing, and can competently function in most sword and lance classes. Dracoknight allows him to fly and keep his lance rank, Sniper and Horseman give him bow access and the latter keeps his swords, and one particularly intriguing option is Swordmaster, which bumps him up to A-rank Swords and gives very high Speed. He can also reasonably stay a Paladin for the entire playthrough and function well enough.

In general, the player can change Sirius to fit the situation, making him a character who should have no problem seeing use to the very last chapters. As he is required for the final chapter, this is not a bad idea.

Zeke joins very late, but he should be used for the maps he's in. His movement, strength, HP and defense are very good, which allows him to take out bulky enemies while surviving their attacks without a problem. His only real problem is his mediocre speed, which might lead to him getting doubled by some of the faster enemies. Nonetheless, he performs very well against the majority of foes, and requires virtually no investment to function.

Camus is one of the earliest Lance Cavalry units who was also a Grand Hero Battle, making him an easily accessible unit with a strong weapon for his time, but has fallen out of relevance with time. His statline is mostly balanced with a decent offensive statline and physical bulk. Unfortunately, his Res is low which causes problems with the ability of his lance. While he does have some situations where he is at least decent, nothing about him at the current moment has brought him on level with the scores of heroes released long after him.

Gradivus is a strong lance whose only effect is that is grants Camus a Distant Counter effect. While this means he can bait Bow and Dagger units, he is not suited to take Mages due to his low magical bulk. In its current state, it is his best weapon but it still is not enough to make him standout over other lance cavalry units out there. The recent weapon refine update does help him a bit, with Gradivus' special refine giving him 4 to all stats and recovering 7 points of health either in Enemy Phase or if his foe is with full health.

Growing Thunder allows him to damage enemies in a specific pattern calculated between his Atk and the Def of each individual enemy in the area of effect. Unfortunately, his Atk is not exactly the highest, meaning that he is not quite as explosive when using this skill. Grani's Shield is an exclusive Skill A to Camus that removes his Cavalry weakness. While this may remove the bonus damage of certain units like Gray which saves him, perhaps one of the most notable Cavalry counters, Micaiah and her various forms, does not require the bonus damage to at least deal critical damage. It is decent to consider running as its there, but it is far from the strongest option that he can run when Skill Inheritance exists. Goad Cavalry helps boost the Atk/Spd of his fellow Cavalry allies by 4 during combat so long as they are within two spaces of them when they are in combat. The boost is useful in most situations and is worth maintaining if keeping him exclusively on a Cavalry team where he too is most likely at his strongest.

Counters

Bulky greens like Surtr and Hector easily can take a hit from Camus with little trouble then retaliate through their own sheer strength while fast greens like Raven can easily double him. Even some blue units can do this too under the same prerequisites. As mentioned, his low Res is easily exploited by the common Blue and Green mages that flooded the earliest and later releases of Heroes. With staff users later receiving Wrathful Staff, they too also can deal huge damage to him. Finally, Cavalry effective weapons, if not running Grani's Shield, exploits his status.

Skill Inheritance

Reposition is the go to Special for Camus as its ability to move allies out of danger and put himself in front can save an ally from danger, especially if he can stay out of the range or position him between an ally and an enemy that he can counter through color advantage. Bonfire is a much stronger special as it takes advantage of his decent Def for damage fuel.

Stance skills like Fierce Stance, Steady Stance, and/or Warding Stance works well by focusing on defensive builds and baiting units. The latter can decrease the number of mages that he can survive and retaliate, while the two capitalizes on his core strongest stats. Vantage is a long running early option to ensure he can deal with his foes before they can to either secure a kill or soften them for an ally to retaliate. Goad Cavalry is useful, but Hone Cavalry/Fortify Cavalry can be considered as well.

Sirius, aka Masked Camus, is a far superior version of his unmasked, normal version despite not innately having Distant Counter on his weapon. His offensive stats are stronger than before and his physical bulk remains workable, but his magical resistance is still quite low. Nonetheless, his stats are strong enough to easily be put to work with moderate success and being a cavalry unit with his stats and base kit allows him to charge the enemy with dispatch them with ease.

Sable Lance decreases his Special Cooldown by 1, allowing him to charge it faster. When he is not adjacent to an ally, he gains +4 to his core stats, making him far stronger than he seems. It also can be strengthened by other skills that rely on a unit to be alone, such as his innate Attack Speed Solo, which further increases his Atk/Spd by 6 when alone, meaning that when alone, he has +10 Atk/Spd and +4 Def/Res. He is a solo unit meant to begin combat and should avoid staying close to allies to make the most of these two skills.

Luna is his Special and with his weapon's effect, he has the same cooldown as Moonbow, but instead ignores 50% of his opponent's Def rather than just 30 for the same cooldown as Moonbow's base. Lull Attack Speed inflicts -3 Atk/Spd to his opponent and if they have any visible buff to those two stats, they are also negated, allowing him to hit harder and score some doubles on more units than before.

Counters

Sirius still is quite weak to mages and Wrathful Staff units as he still has poor Res even if Sable Lance's Res boost is active, though that may help more towards wall Mages. While his cavalry status does give him mobility, it still makes him weak to Horseslayer units and especially Micaiah who is notorious as a Cavalry killer. Finally, some Greens are able to withstand his attacks even with all of his skills active and can deal moderate damage through color advantage.

Skill Inheritance

Reposition is an excellent positioning skill for Sirius' Support to give him better synergy on just about any team though that ally needs to move away so he can have his weapon active. Shove or Smite can also be considered just to move them away out of danger and himself. Bonfire is a great Special as it has more consistency in damage output than Luna and the accelerated cooldown means that he can activate it more often. Galeforce is also with considering as his sheer damage output can easily allow him to activate it and continue rampaging through his enemy. Attack Smoke or Defense Smoke are perhaps his best Skill C just to help him soften their attacks or defenses respectively to increase his damage output. Goad Cavalry or Ward Cavalry allows him to help his teammates even when distancing himself just enough to not be adjacent to an ally, but still give his Cavalry allies some help.

Etymology

Camus is a Basque surname. In folklore, Camus was a Scandinavian general who fought the Scots at the Battle of Barry. The name Camus derives from 'Camuston', the location of the Camus Cross.

Of the fan translated names for his Gaiden appearance, "Sieg" means victory and "Zeke" is the short form of the name Ezekiel ("God will strengthen"), a prophet from the Bible.

Sirius is the most prominent star of the greater dog constellation, Canis Major, and is the brightest star in the Earth's sky (excluding the Sun). Its name comes from the Greek word Seirios ("scorcher").

Trivia

  • Camus shares his Japanese voice actor, Kazuhiko Inoue, with Frost in Archanea Saga.
  • Camus shares his English voice actor in Fire Emblem Heroes, Travis Willingham, with Lon'qu and Brady in Awakening, Garon and Anankos' Dragon form in Fates, and Ogma in Heroes.
  • Camus' sprite in Heroes possesses major differences from his artwork in the game. Instead, it seems to be based on his artwork from Shadow Dragon.
  • Camus, alongside the Whitewings, has made the most appearances in the Archanea Series, appearing more than even Marth, Caeda, Nyna, and Hardin.
  • Before being encountered on the battlefield, Marth can encounter Camus in a village during Chapter 14: Land of Sorrow. He gives Marth the Thoron Tome which he instructs Marth to give to Boah. In the event recap of Shadow Dragon this scene is named "Mysterious Knight".
  • His age is given as 26 or above in the novel by Takayashiki Hideo.
  • His official artwork for Shadow Dragon, Heroes and Echoes: Shadows of Valentia depict him wielding the Gradivus.
  • Even though Camus normally has blond hair, his One Hundred Songs of Heroes cards depicts him as Sirius, but with brown hair.
  • In Heroes, Camus' Grand Hero Battle map is based on a portion of Shadow Dragon Chapter 20.
  • The Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows Of Valentia Art Book implies that Sirius's mask was the same mask worn by Conrad, who gifted it to him before "Ezekiel" left Valentia.
  • Awakening is the only game to miss a Camus Archetype where he isn't playable in the main story.
  • Camus is currently the only character to have his voice actor from Fire Emblem: Archanea Saga reprise his role in Heroes.
