—Louis during Chapter 4.
Louis is a character from Fire Emblem Engage. He is a knight from the capital of Firene. He is a gentle retainer, wrapped in heavy armor.
Profile
Louis is one of Céline's retainers. Hailing from a Firenese town known for its grapes, he grew up as the eldest brother of four boys. After his mother's death, his father was swept up in work to provide for his sons, meaning Louis often had to look after his brothers. Eventually, he took the Firenese knighthood exam, impressing the royal family with his martial prowess and domestic skills, and became a retainer despite his common origins.
When Firene was invaded by Elusia, Queen Ève sent Céline with the Ring of the Caring Princess to prevent it from falling into Elusia's hands and meet with her brother, Prince Alfred. Louis and Chloé tailed her, but was slightly separated from her in Florra Mill Town. As luck would have it, Céline was able to meet with Alfred who had brought the Divine Dragon Alear to assist Firene against the invading Elusia army. They are able to drive away the Corrupted from Florra Mill Town and Louis accompanies his liege for the rest of his journey.

Louis is the archetypal physical tank of Engage, having fantastic starting stats and growth rates in HP, Strength, Build and especially Defense, and average or below-average growths everywhere else. His enormous physical bulk and Strength means he is effectively able to take on an overwhelming number of physical attackers by himself while dealing high damage in return, as demonstrated in his opening chapter. His Speed and Resistance however are quite low, making him extremely vulnerable to Magic units who are very likely to get in Follow-Ups on him despite his ability to wield relatively heavy weaponry without being slowed. His low Dexterity can also give him trouble landing hits on evasive enemies later in the game.
His starting class, Lance Armor, naturally complements his high defenses by giving him the Armored Battle Style which grants him immunity to Break, meaning he cannot be disarmed except via Smash Weapons or the Fracture Staff. This lets him consistently deal heavy amounts of damage during the enemy phase, something that other non-Armors cannot reliably do against large attacking groups with mixed weaponry. General is his natural promotion path and further improves all of his strengths, though unlike most promotions it does not grant any increase in movement, making his mobility noticeably lacking in later chapters. Great Knight is an alternative option, letting him keep up with other units in the army at the cost of his Break immunity.
His Personal Skill, Admiration, causes Louis to take 2 less damage during combat if two female allies are within 2 spaces. While aiding in his defenses, his physical defense is already so high that further reductions are largely overkill, while he will still take heavy damage from mage units regardless, making the skill somewhat niche.
Louis can work well with both defensive and supportive Emblem Rings. The Ring of the Holy Knight largely fixes his mobility issues by giving him extra movement, and inheriting Hit Rate + can help alleviate his low accuracy. The Ring of the Radiant Hero further boosts his high defenses and gives him both a strong crowd-clearing tool in Great Aether and utility in Reposition. The Ring of the Crux of Fate can boost his ability to take on large groups of enemies by giving him immunity to Chain Attacks through Pair Up, as well as generally good supporting tools with Torrential Roar, Draconic Hex and Quality Time.
Overall, Louis is an incredibly strong early game unit and in contention for the best armored unit in the overall series. Even in runs where he will not be invested into, he can become a second Jagen of sorts by reliably tanking and softening up opponents for other units to finish off, and with investment he is still quite capable of scaling through much of the latter half of the game despite his shortcomings. Using Louis during any playthrough is almost always recommended for these reasons.
