Hyacinth

“This grand cathedral will serve as your grave. Thanks to your impetuousness, you bought the rings unto my very hand.”
—Hyacinth

Hyacinth is a supporting antagonist in Fire Emblem Engage. He is the King of Elusia and the father of Ivy and Hortensia.

Profile

Hyacinth is the Sage King of Elusia and the father of Crown Princess Ivy and her younger sister Hortensia. Under instruction of the Fell Dragon, he first sends forces to Lythos to steal the six Emblem Rings they have. The mission ends partially successful with his forces able to steal four of the rings.

Later, he sends Ivy and Hortensia to find the Divine Dragon Alear and steal the rings they have reclaimed. To complete the mission, he gives the Ring of the Sage Lord to Ivy and the Ring of the Princess Exalt to Hortensia, both of which have been corrupted by Sombron. Both of his daughters fail to take the rings from Alear, with Ivy in particular losing her Emblem Ring during the fight at Brodia Castle.

Hyacinth leads an army of Corrupted to the Brodia-Elusia border and personally challenges the King of Brodia, Morion. The two meet on the battlefield where Morion immediately has the upperhand. However, having received the corrupted Ring of the Lady of the Plains, Hyacinth is able to mortally wound King Morion. With his opponent subdued, he takes Morion to Destinea Cathedral as he orders Ivy to stall Alear and their forces. Due to her losing her ring, he does not give her another one as punishment.

At the cathedral, Hyacinth sacrifices Morion to Sombron. Using Morion's sovereign blood, Sombron's resurrection begins just as Alear and their forces arrive. Hyacinth manages to stall them long enough for Sombron to arrive. As Hyacinth welcomes the Fell Dragon, Sombron thanks him but also states that he still hungers. Hyacinth offers Alear's forces, but Sombron informs him that only sovereign blood can restore his powers. Realizing what he means, Hyacinth feebly attempts to flee only to be caught by a transformed Sombron. After devouring the Elusian King, all that remained was the Ring of the Lady of the Plains which Ivy later retrieves and gives to Alear.

Hyacinth is later turned into a Corrupted and is given the Ring of the Sage Lord and fights Alear along with Veyle and the Four Hounds. When Hyacinth is defeated, Alear gets the Ring of the Sage Lord from him.

Personality

Hyacinth is the cunning King of Elusia, scheming to revive the Fell Dragon Sombron. He is not above dirty strategies to accomplish his goals and willingly accepts the Fell Dragon's blessings as a means of obtaining power. However in spite of this, Hyacinth also has a cowardly personality which is evident when he is facing death. This is shown twice when he's cornered in battle and in the last moments of his life when Sombron devoured him.

According to his two daughters, Hyacinth was once a kind, wise man who cared deeply for his family and his kingdom. Much of this was lost when he aligned with Gradlon.

Chapter 17

“I remember nothing... That look on your face—is it fear or hatred?”
—Corrupted Hyacinth's pre-battle quote

Vs. Ivy

  • Corrupted Hyacinth: Ivy.
  • Ivy: Father. I've not seen you since we were at the Brodian border. That was our farewell. In this life, at least.
  • Corrupted Hyacinth: It need not be. I can appeal to Lord Sombron—ask him to welcome you back as our ally.
  • Ivy: No. You are...not you. I will not cling tearfully to my Father's shadow. But I am grateful for this. Grateful for this chance to thank you, say goodbye, and tell you that as Elusia's queen... I will surpass you.

Vs. Hortensia

  • Corrupted Hyacinth: Hortensia.
  • Hortensia: Father! I've missed you. I wanted to see you so badly. I've been so sad since you died...
  • Corrupted Hyacinth: Then, dear daughter, follow me. Kill your friends and bring me their rings.
  • Hortensia: No, I won't. I want to live up to my father, the wise king of Elusia... My real father. Before the Fell Dragon ruined him.
  • Corrupted Hyacinth: Rrgh...
  • Hortensia: Goodbye, Father. I'm sad we didn't have more time together. I love you. Soon this will all be over, OK? Soon you'll be able to rest.
Death Quote
“The moment I slipped into the Fell Dragon's thrall, my fate was sealed. Ivy, Hortensia... I'm sorry. Know that I love you both. Elusia is yours to lead...and yours to save.”

Etymology

Hyacinth refers to a group of flowering plants. Hyacinths have different representations depending on their color but mostly symbolize jealously and sorrow.

Hyacinth also comes from Hyakinthos. In Greek Mythology, Hyakinthos was a young boy whom Apollo and Zephyr were competing for affection from. When Apollo tried to teach Hyakinthos how to throw a discus, Zephyr blew the discus back towards them which instantly killed Hyakinthos. Upon his death, Apollo saw a small flower blooming from him and decided to name it Hyacinth in memory of him.
