Brighton

“Yes. We will go to your aid once we release the people here.”
—Brighton

Brighton is a playable character from Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. A former knight of Munster, he defects from his knighthood to join Ced's Magi Squad. According to the instruction manual for the game, Brighton was originally a knight of Munster due to his father being a retainer of Raydrik, although he later defected after being horrified at the way the regime treated civilians. Brighton is also Machyua's lover.

Profile

Brighton first appears in Chapter 4, where, under orders from Ced, he, along with Machyua and Lara, breaks into the Munster dungeons to rescue Leif after the prince is captured by Raydrik.

Brighton then goes on to continue supporting Leif in his cause to liberate Northern Thracia from the Grannvale Empire. He returns home to Munster thereafter, working to restore it to its former prosperity and imparting swordsmanship skills to the people. Brighton also marries an unnamed woman, who is likely Machyua, and opens a small shop with her.

Personality

Due to his limited characterization, not much is known of Brighton. But from what little screen-time he has, it can be deduced that he has a strong sense of righteousness, one that motivated him to turn away from his homeland in order to join the rebellion.

Overall

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Brighton is a unit who is “good enough” in the early game but quickly finds himself outclassed as the game progresses. While he has some redeeming qualities, such as Wrath and mounted utility outdoors, he suffers from poor long-term viability and mediocre combat that prevents him from standing out.

Brighton joins in Chapter 4 at the start of the Munster Escape segment, and he immediately has a couple of issues. Brighton starts out with a D-rank in Swords, and as a result he struggles to break bulkier enemies like Armor Knights. He is also dismounted, which hampers his mobility indoors. Despite this, he is one of the better combatants in that segment, and even has a small niche of being one of the few units that can ferry Ced to take on the reinforcement in the center of the map.

From Chapter 6 onwards, Brighton regains his mount. Not only does his mobility improve, but he can also help with ferrying your infantry units to prevent them from falling behind. Unfortunately for Brighton, his combat becomes a lot worse as he is Axe-locked outdoors. In Chapter 7, Brighton struggles against the Mercenaries as he suffers Weapon Triangle disadvantage, and can even be doubled by them. Wrath can make dealing with them slightly easier, but it's still frustrating regardless. Unfortunately, Chapter 7 is one of the last chapters where Brighton is at all useful, as Finn joins in Chapter 7 and outclasses him in every way.

Brighton is a serviceable early-game unit, offering decent combat and mobility in the Munster Escape sequence. However, his poor combat scaling, axe-lock issues, and eventual redundancy make him a short-term unit. He is solid early on, but isn't worth trying to make work long-term.
