Somniel

Somniel

The Somniel is a location in Fire Emblem Engage that functions as the game's hub area.

Profile

The Somniel is a floating island of the Holy Land of Lythos, and where Alear slept for 1,000 years. Prior to Alear's awakening, access to the Somniel was heavily restricted with only their various caretakers over the generations and the royal families of Elyos making regular visits. The royal family of Firene in particular, who worships the Divine Dragons of Elyos, made far more visits than any other country. In fact, it is only by the power of a Divine Dragon that allows anyone to have access to it. As such, only Alear and Lumera have the ability to allow access to the Somniel.

In the Fell Xenologue, the Somniel of that world eventually crashed into the ocean just south of Lythos after the Divine Dragons of the world died.

Features

Similar to My Castle from Fire Emblem Fates, Garreg Mach Monastery from Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Base Camp from Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, the Somniel serves as a base of operations in Engage. Between battles, Alear and their allies can be found wandering the island.

Ally characters can be found wandering the Somniel once recruited. They can be freely interacted with, giving players insight to their thoughts of recent or upcoming events. Players can give characters gifts and change their attire.

Etymology

Somniel is similar in spelling to the word somnial, an adjective of French origin meaning, "of or relating to sleep or dreams." The "Somn" part of Somniel may derive from Somnus, the Roman god of sleep. His name is also the Latin word for "sleep" and is akin to somnium, which is the Latin word for "dream." Its Japanese name, Soranel, may derive from the Japanese word for "sky," sora. The -el suffix in both names may also come from Abrahamic religions where it means "of God."
