Candace

Candace is a capturable boss character from Fire Emblem Fates. She is a self-proclaimed legendary treasure hunter hailing from Nohr who has dedicated her entire life to exploration.

Profile

While exploring the world in pursuit of treasured relics, Candace travels with a group of "barbarians" who appear to tolerate her; although not formally a part of the group, Candace claims that the barbarians are perfect for distracting foes while she flees.

Candace formally appears in Paralogue 6, where she bids a member of the bandit group that she is traveling with to steal a bag of Dragon Herbs from Midori. When confronted on her theft, Candace launches in a twisted defense of her action, justifying it as being no different from Midori "stealing" the herbs from the forest. A battle thereafter ensues with Candace attempting to flee with Corrin's army hot on her heels. The army eventually corners her and either strikes her down or captures her, recovering the stolen herbs.

Candace also makes an appearance in the DLC episode Museum Melee as a visitor from another world.

Personality

Owing to the minor role that she plays in the game, not much is known of Candace's personality. From her involvement in the paralogue that she appears in, however, some aspects of her character may be gleaned. For one, she is portrayed as arrogant and narcissistic, shamelessly indulging in self-praise when she unveils her identity before Midori. Despite her portly appearance, Candace brags about her nimbleness due to her ventures as a treasure hunter.

Candace has also been depicted as deceitful, tricking and confusing others through her clever twisting of words in order to justify the dishonorable actions that she partakes in. This fact is best evidenced through her confrontation with Midori, during which she deliberately uses periphrastic language to confuse Midori and justify her ownership of a bag of Dragon Herbs that she stole from the young girl.

Overall

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Candace is a bit of an oddity as she has tremendous starting HP and reasonable Luck and Resistance growths. Her Speed growth is also reasonably average and can land Follow-Up Attacks. She is offset by her low Skill stat, making it hard for her to land hits and score Critical hits and both of her offensive stat growths are relatively low with her Magic stat slightly edging out her Strength by 10%. As such, as an innate Adventurer, she can be a modest healer with dodging capabilities while applying damage through Shining Bows and Levin Swords.

Candace shares the same flaw with the other unique Capture Boss Characters in that she has no Supports with any character, thus is left with the bare minimum of its bonuses. She is even more unique compared to the rest as her unique model makes her completely incapable of reclassing into anything outside of her Adventurer class, not even the side promotion of Bow Knight. As such, she is extremely limited in her Skill pool outside of the Outlaw and Adventurer skills as well as any skill that can be provided by a Skill Tome like Aether and Warp.

Overall, Candace is one of the weaker boss characters to Capture as she has the least amount of options to personalize her and still pales in comparison to the likes of the main playable characters of her class: Niles, Nina, and Anna. She can perform modestly but is no equivalent substitute for the main options available.

Etymology

Dragée is a tiny, hard candy used to decorate baked goods. Likewise, Candace is phonetically similar to the word candy.

Trivia

  • Candace shares her English voice actress, Amber Hood, with Nyx and Soleil.
  • Due to her unique character model, Candace is the only capturable unit that cannot use any reclassing items. However, if she is forcibly reclassed via hacking, she keeps her unique Adventurer model regardless. Due to this, it is not recommended to reclass her into a cavalry-type or flying-type unit due to the risk of glitches.
  • Candace is unable to wear body accessories. This is mostly likely due to her unique body type.
  • Curiously, Candace and Nichol both have critical cut-in portraits. In addition, their names are listed among characters who can only support Corrin.
    • This may imply the two capturable units originally had a larger role during the development of Fates, before they were reduced to optional Paralogue bosses.
    • Along with Nichol, Candace was the only capturable boss eligible for votes in the Fire Emblem Heroes Choose Your Legend until its fifth installment in 2021.
  • Candace is the first capturable boss from Fates to become playable in Heroes.
