He also appears in Suikoden II.

He is a bandit from Mt. Seifu and is usually seen working with his near-silent partner, Sydonia.

Story

Suikoden I

Wrongfully blamed for stealing tax funds from the town of Rockland, Varkas and Sydonia are forced to fight Tir McDohl and his entourage. The duo are defeated and taken as prisoners to Rockland.

Varkas and Sydonia are strung up by the town's military commander as an example to the public of what happens when people oppose his corrupt rule. However, Varkas is soon rescued by Tir and his entourage. To show his generosity, he offers his assistance (and Sydonia's) to the Liberation Army, should they ever request it.

Upon returning to Toran Castle after recruiting Lepant, Tir is greeted by Varkas and Sydonia, who had heard rumors and decided that it would be a good time to repay the favor, and joined the Liberation Army. Their questions on the location of Odessa are deftly evaded by Mathiu.

Suikoden II

After the war, Varkas was appointed captain of the Border Guards and set to guarding Banner Pass.
