Ted |
"I hate to bring friendship into this. And knowing it will bring unhappiness. But.... But....., you're the only one! Please! Please protect this rune!" |
Ted is a recurring character in the Suikoden series. He initially appeared in the original Suikoden game as a temporary playable character, and was not one of the 108 Stars of Destiny. He was later made a playable Star of Destiny in Suikoden IV, appearing 150 years prior to his first appearance as the Tenkan Star.
Profile
Background
Ted was born in the Village of the Hidden Rune and was the only survivor of an attack on the village by Windy, Neclord and Yuber. He was given the Soul Eater rune by his grandfather and had become a wanderer for the last 300 years. 150 years after he left the village of the Hidden Rune, he was traveling around the Island Nations. After being rescued from the Fog Ship Guide, he joins the Island Liberation war against Kooluk. 150 years later, he is seen in the Scarlet Moon Empire. Settled down with his friend Tir, he must run from the magician Windy, who wants to steal the Soul Eater from him.
Appearance
Personality
Because of the burden he carries, Ted is a secretive person, and doesn't have friends, with the exception of Tir.
Story
Suikoden IV
During the Island Liberation War, Ted is seen on the fog ship, where he had given up the Soul Eater to the Fog Ship Guide. When Lazlo appeared with the Rune of Punishment, he sees Lazlo's determination to keep the Rune of Punishment even if he suffers. As a result, Ted decided to go along with him. The Fog Ship Guide refused to let Ted and Lazlo go and tried to take the Rune of Punishment as well. They defeated the Fog Ship Guide, while Ted re-obtained the Soul Eater.
Afterwards, Ted joined the Island Liberation Navy and helped Lazlo to fight against Kooluk forces. While he was on board the Dauntless, Aldo took an interest in him and wanted them to be friends. Ted always gave him the cold shoulder, not wanting to get close to anyone due to the Soul Eater. His cold personality had melted a little, and even gave kind words towards Lazlo on the night before the final battle.
Suikoden I
Before the Toran Liberation War, he accompanies Tir in some of his earlier quests in the game. Windy soon finds out that Ted is the bearer of the Soul Eater and attempts to take his life, so it could be hers. Severely wounded, Ted escapes Windy and appears at the McDohl household and passed the rune to his good friend Tir. Ted then stayed behind as a decoy so that Windy would not obtain the rune.
During the Toran Liberation War, Ted, along with Windy, appears when Tir was trying to gain the Moonlight Weed in Seek Valley. Ted is under Windy's Conqueror Rune and can't control his body, but with the Soul Eater around he can communicate to Tir and take control of his body. To save Tir and his comrades, Ted commanded the Soul Eater to take his life. Ted bid his final farewell to his best friend and passed away. Ted's death unlocked the Soul Eater's Level 4 spell, Judgment.
Role in the Game
Ted is a standard archer. He has good attack power but his limited equipment and light defense make him easy to pick off. Due to ???? being attached to him, he has no rune customization. He's a temporary character, so his weaknesses are not too big of a deal. His magic rating actually surpasses Cleo's if he is leveled long enough.
Ted's Soul Eater is permanently attached to him and unusable while he is with you.

Ted has no Unite Attacks.
After obtaining 71 Stars of Destiny, enter the War Room on the Dauntless. Upon entering, a Fog Ship will appear. Complete the events on the fog ship to obtain Ted.
Note - Ted cannot be recruited after liberating Obel.
Ted has great affinity with all elemental rune affinities, his magic stat is also fairly high, which makes him well suited as a sturdy mage build. His Soul Eater Rune is permanently attached, but he makes really good use of a Flowing Rune which will give him better healing/support capabilities that mesh well with his True Rune's high damage potential.

- R. Hand - Soul Eater
- L. Hand - Water Rune
Ted has good affinity with all elemental affinities, however, as his Soul Eater is unique and has very strong damage rating, it is better to save MP for it and use the Water Rune (or Flowing Rune, if available) for support.

- Keen: You have done well by coming here. In this room, you may confess what is in your heart and accept proper judgement.
- Ted: What's that supposed to mean?
- Keen: Would you secretly inform me about anyone on board this ship who you think is causing problems?
- Ted: That's none of my concern... nor is it yours...
- Ted: Well... He's doing quite all right, isn't he?
- Keen: Finally, quietly confess the things you wish to atone for, or all the things that you are thankful for.
- Ted: Nothing in particular... As long as no one bothers me, I'm fine.
- Keen: Then, I shall pass judgement!
If you've got no business, don't come approach me. Please.
What's with that Aldo guy? He looks kind of familiar... I just want to be left alone. When you see him, tell him to just mind his own business.
I never really cared much for fish, but that tuna I had earlier was good...
Trivia
- In Suikoden II, Ted's profile picture from Suikoden can be seen as a portrait in Tir McDohl's room in Gregminster.
- Ted's Soul Eater rune is named as ???? and is unusable in Suikoden.
