Gremio |
"Young Master, I'm proud of you. Promise me you'll always follow your heart." |
Gremio is the Tenei Star in Suikoden.
He also makes an appearance in Suikoden II if a save file from Suikoden is loaded with the right conditions met.
Profile
Background
A servant of the McDohl household under Teo McDohl and caretaker of Tir McDohl. Though slightly overprotective, it was well-known that Gremio cared for Tir more than anyone else.
At the age of nine, Gremio lost his parents in a war and lived as a wanderer for seven years. During this time, he was rescued in the desert by Teo McDohl, which led to his becoming a servant of the McDohl family and later the caretaker of Tir.
Initially, Gremio approached his duties as a way to repay Teo’s kindness. However, he came to see himself in Tir, who had also lost his mother at a young age, and eventually regarded Tir as his own son.
The large scar on his cheek was inflicted during the rescue of Tir when he had been taken hostage. To Gremio, the scar symbolizes his unwavering vow to protect Tir at all costs.
Despite his prowess in wielding an axe to defend Tir, Gremio had a domestic and nurturing nature. He served as the McDohl household’s cook and was especially particular about stew. Gremio’s dedication to crafting the perfect stew was so intense that he wouldn’t even acknowledge Tir’s presence in the kitchen while cooking. The resulting dish was said to be so exquisite that it impressed even professional chefs.
Appearance
Gremio is a somewhat thin and androgynous-appearing man with long blond hair tied into a low ponytail, with a notable x-shaped scar on his right cheek. He wears blue clothes and a green cape. His weapon of choice is an axe.
Personality
Gremio is a caring and protective man, looking after Tir like a parent for a significant portion of his life. He is loyal to the point of being willing to die to protect Tir.
Story
Suikoden I
Throughout the Gate Rune War, he stayed by Tir’s side, taking care of his needs and using his beloved axe to shield him from harm.
However, in Soniere Prison, Gremio fell into Milich Oppenheimer's trap. Facing what seemed like inevitable death for everyone, Gremio chose to sacrifice himself. To halt the spread of the flesh-eating spores unleashed by Milich, Gremio locked the rest of the party outside the room, sealing the door behind him. As his consciousness faded, he urged Tir to remain true to his chosen path. These final words served as a source of strength for Tir, burdened by the responsibilities of leading the Liberation Army.
Later in the war, through the power of Leknaat's "Gate Rune" and the collective wishes of all 107 stars of destiny in the Liberation Army, Gremio was miraculously resurrected. With the full roster of 108 stars, the Liberation Army reached peak morale and advanced to their final battle, ultimately ending the war against the Scarlet Moon Empire.
After the war, Gremio declined the position of Toran Republic’s first president and accompanied Tir on his wanderings, continuing to protect him.
Suikoden II
Gremio appears in Suikoden II along with Tir McDohl in Banner Village after defeating Luca Blight if you have transferred game data from Suikoden into Suikoden II from the last save point in Gregminster Castle. Gremio must have been obtained at the end of the game after recruiting the other 107 Stars of Destiny. Gremio is a non-playable character in this game and joins your convoy during the McDohl side quest.
Gremio can grant the player his Recipe #39 (Special Stew).
Role in the Game
Joins automatically before receiving the first mission from Kraze, but leaves after the events in Soniere. However, he rejoins just before the final battle if all 107 other stars are recruited.
Gremio is a required party member during the early parts of the game. He is an average character in stat growth, but his medium range weapon makes him a good back or front row character. His weapon also gains some significant power at the highest level, which helps to offset his average strength. The best with offense he could do is to the Talisman Attack with Pahn, which benefits both of them with double damage and no unbalance at all. He will also protect Tir in combat if Tir is at critical HP.

None
Gremio is statistically average in many areas. While he can use magic runes, his MP pool will be low for most of the game, so it may be best to give him support runes like the Prosperity Rune or the Holy Rune. Eventually the Killer Rune could be an alternate choice for him.

Trivia
- After passing through Kwaba, Gremio laments heavily over threatening Tir. When presented with an option, choosing "Unforgivable!" three times will result in Gremio attempting to kill himself because he knows he can't be forgiven, with Viktor stepping in and telling Tir to forgive Gremio.
- In Suikoden, Viktor will present Tir with Gremio's axe at a certain point in the game. The name of the axe presented will depend on the weapon name when Gremio passes away. The axe is a special item that appears in the party Items.
- Gremio used Roi as his fake name in Suikoden.
- Gremio's death will unlock the level 2 spell of the Soul Eater, Black Shadow.
