Hop

The Hop,^[1][2] also known as Jump,^[2] is a move that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a small leap the user does while running to avoid small bumps during the courses, thus allowing the player to preserve running momentum.

Description

Hop involves the user jumping with a light leap while running without going into a full Spin Jump. It can be used to quickly cross small gaps and clear low obstacles that would otherwise make the user trip or negate the Boost, without losing speed and/or momentum, which is the downside to using a regular Spin Jump.

While grinding, the player can leap greater than when they are running on the ground.

Sonic Unleashed

The Hop first appeared in both the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version and Wii/PlayStation 2 version of Sonic Unleashed, where it can only be used by Sonic in the daytime Stages. To perform the move in gameplay, the player must lightly tap the following buttons:

Sonic Colors

In the Wii version of Sonic Colors, and the remaster Sonic Colors: Ultimate, the Hop is used mostly in Tropical Resort where there are several bumps encountered in several of the Area's acts. To perform the move in gameplay, the player must tap the following buttons:

Sonic Generations

In Sonic Generations, the Hop is only used by Modern Sonic. In the console/PC version of the game, special, brightly colored and long bumper-style objects can be found in several stages, including Green Hill and Speed Highway, which mark where the Hop is best used. In the battle against Silver, if the player does not have enough energy in the Boost Gauge to knock away debris, the Hop is a good way to do so.

The Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations is the first portable game where Sonic can perform the Hop. However, like in Sonic Colors it is more of a novelty that can be entirely ignored.
