Excavator

Excavator (エクスカベイター^[1], Ekusukabeitā^?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Guardian that dwells on Chaos Island, being a stronger variant of the Tower. It has an even stronger variant called Red Pillar.

Appearance

The Excavator is a robotic enemy composed of various stacked parts, with multiple cylindrical segments, a head, and a spiked base. Its "body" segments are covered in metal pink, scale-like armor plates which can fan outward when the robot moves or suffers damage. Its head segment has similar "scales" as its body, but with the addition of a sloped purplish plate with grooves evoking a simple face. Its base is a metallic spike which is usually buried in the ground, only being revealed when the Excavator moves around. Finally, it has a thick black ring of scaled metal around its body, which can freely move along any of its body segments.

History

Sonic Frontiers

The Excavator was one of many Guardian robots constructed by the Ancients as a protector of their home, the Starfall Islands. It is unknown how many were originally created or if they participated in the battle against The End, but a few models survived to the present day, long after their creators' civilization collapsed.

Sonic the Hedgehog can encounter Excavator on Chaos Island.

Powers and abilities

The Excavator's basic defense is to spin its ring at high speeds, damaging attackers if they touch it; the ring can also fire explosive spikes for a ranged attack. Despite its apparent immobility, the robot can lift itself out of the ground and hover in the air, moving surprisingly quickly to reposition itself and damaging nearby enemies with the force of its impact with the ground.

The Excavator sits in place and keeps its ring near its head, firing projectiles at Sonic, The player should rush up to the Excavator and begin attacking its body segments, gradually reducing its height. After losing some of its segments, the Excavator will lower its ring to its base, uproot itself, and move to another location; its ring is temporarily forced to ground level when it comes down, giving the player time to hit its head if it's low enough. If Sonic can make it on top of the robot's head, he can attack with impunity.
