Flying

Flying[1][2] (ファン飛行[3][4] Fan hikō?, lit. "Fan flight") is a move that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is the signature technique of Cream the Rabbit where she uses her ears to become airborne.

Description

When using the Flying maneuver, Cream flaps her ears as if they were wings in a vertical motion, thus creating a lift that allows her to fly through the air like a bird. While in flight, Cream can reach exceedingly fast speeds, enough to let her keep up with Sonic the Hedgehog.[5]

In gameplay, using the Flying maneuver allows the player to move through the air in any direction with virtually no restrictions. This allows the player to reach higher places that would be otherwise unreachable, or to cross gaps and bottomless pits. However, there is a limit to how long Cream can stay airborne; after flying non-stop for a while, she will become exhausted and slowly drift downward. The move is also unable to be used underwater. Compared to Tails' Propeller Flying, Cream flies faster but not for as long or high.

Game appearances

Sonic Advance series

Sonic Advance 2

Flying first appeared in Sonic Advance 2 as one of Cream the Rabbit's standard moves. To use the Flying maneuver in gameplay, the player has to press A during a Spin Jump. The player can then either continuously tap A to ascend, or let go to descend. While Flying, the player can control Cream's movements with Directional buttons. The move can be cancelled at anytime by pressing , which will make Cream immediately drop to the ground.

Sonic Advance 3

Sonic Advance 3, Cream can only use the Flying maneuver when she has Sonic, Knuckles, or Amy as her partner. Otherwise, the gameplay controls for Flying are the same as in Sonic Advance 2.

Sonic Heroes

In Sonic Heroes, Cream is shown using the Flying maneuver in the game's cutscenes.
