Shell

The Shell^[1] (シェル^[2], Sheru^?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a skinny enemy with a segmented shell which dwells on Kronos Island.

Appearance

The Shells are red bipedal robots that possess black legs, masquerading themselves with a sharp, metallic and flexible blue shield each that covers its otherwise thin interior. This cobalt exteriors each has a gray top portion with a red outline containing energy.

Overview

In Sonic Frontiers, the Shells appear as enemies. They can be found on Kronos Island. In gameplay, they will take cover whenever Sonic decides to get closer to them. They will also throw their shields like a slicing disc that acts like a boomerang. To defeat a Shell, the player needs to deal damage to it while it is uncovered by its shield until it is destroyed. The Shells, however, will be invulnerable if they choose to hide under their shields. In such instances, the player needs to use the Cyloop ability on the Shells to launch their shields out in the open for a short time, thereby making them vulnerable again, however Quick Cyloop will simply launch them into the air without removing the shield.^[1]

Additionally, the player can bait out an attack from the Shell by moving away from it, then parrying the shield, leaving it's body vulnerable, then using the Homing Attack to close the distance. With proper timing, the Shell can be looped until it is defeated.

Similarly to other enemies, the Shells will drop items, ranging from Skill Pieces to Vault Keys.

Powers and abilities

The Shells are each equipped with a flexible shield that they use both offensively and defensively. When used defensively, the Shells fold their shield around their bodies, making them impervious to harm. When used offensively however, they turn their shields into a sharp disc that can be thrown at their enemies, for then to return to the Shells. It also has an immunity to Quick Cyloop, only being thrown up in the air slightly.

Trivia

• The player can leave the Shell defenseless for as long as they want, by simply performing a Parry against its shield when it comes back to it, making it easy to beat the Shell without performing Cyloop around it.
