Tornado Defense (トルネードシュート,Torunēdoshūto?, lit. "Tornado shoot") is a mini-game from the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, played from Sonic's point of view whilst riding on Tails' Tornado-1. The objective of the level is to fight off enemy aircrafts as they attack the player, similar to Sky Chase. Sonic must fight the Egg Cauldron boss at the end of this level.
In Act 1, the Tornado Defense stage is set in the clear blue skies of the Earth above the continent containing Apotos and Spagonia.
In Act 2, set in the skies above the continent where Eggmanland is based at, the stage visually becomes more ominous compared to Act 1, with the red skies now filled with black and brown clouds.
Story
Act 1
After Sonic met up with Tails at Apotos, the duo head to Spagonia to meet up with Professor Pickle. As the Earth was broken at the time, they decided to take the Tornado on a short flight to their destination. The duo was then attacked by Dr. Eggman's robot fleet followed by in an attempt to cross the border to Spagonia. The doctor also personally confronted the heroic duo on his flying fortress, the Egg Cauldron, which his assistant robot SA-55 highly advised to use the Egg Cauldron gently. Sonic and Tails withstood the ailing assault over the Egg Cauldron as its energy levels dropped, prompting the doctor to retreat while the duo continued onwards to Spagonia.
Act 2
At a much later point, Sonic and Tails are en route to Eggmanland to restore the last continent. As one might predict, they encountered Eggman's robot fleet once more as they entered the airspace. Dr. Eggman fought Sonic and Tails on the Egg Cauldron once again, but the heroes triumphed over the flying fortress a second time, causing the Egg Cauldron to crash-land while Sonic and Tails continued onwards to Eggmanland
Gameplay
Sonic needs to shoot down Eggman's robots and their attacks as they fly towards him through the use of Real-Time Interaction shown on-screen. Pressing the specified button before its timer gauge depletes will destroy the highlighted target. Sometimes, the player may need to press multiple buttons in a sequence to destroy a group of enemies at once.
If the player simply mashes all of the buttons with disregard, the Tornado will lose energy and be unable to fire any more projectiles for a second or two, leaving Sonic and Tails vulnerable to attack. To quickly recover from this, the player may press and / and in an alternating sequence (That is , , , /, , , , etc.) The Tornado has a Health Gauge, labeled as Shield which starts from 100%, that will decrease each time it suffers damage from enemy attacks. Incidentally, all harmful attacks are shootable missile attacks where if the player does not input the button quickly enough to destroy them before its timer gauge depletes, it will connect with the Tornado and damage it. Most attacks deal 8% though some can deal more. If the Shield reaches zero, the player will lose a life and will have to restart the entire act from the beginning.
Each time a target (enemy or projectile attack) is destroyed successfully, the player earns points. Also, the Combo counter increments by 1 for each consecutive target destroyed, which increases the score multiplier. A sound can be heard when the Combo counter reaches a value that is a multiple of 10. If the player presses an incorrect button (pressing a button which is not indciated on a target enemy or attack) or sustains damage from an attack, the Combo counter is reset.
Additionally, enemies can sometimes appear in a group, which requires a specific sequence of buttons to be inputted that will destroy all of them and grant a massive amount of points.
The Tornado Defense acts can be replayed anytime after clearing them (with Act 1 at Spagonia/Rooftop Run and Act 2 at Eggmanland though only after the player clears the game's story).
An achievement called "Ace Pilot" of Sonic Unleashed requires the player to complete the first act of Tornado Defense without taking damage.
As the player's projectile shot is fired against the enemies, the color of the projectile matches the color of the button pressed. As such, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions each have different colored projectiles to match their respective console controller's button colors.
