Switzerland is a Tier III nation located in Central Europe .
Background
Switzerland, officially the Swiss Confederation, is a country situated at the confluence of Western, Central, and Southern Europe. It is a federal republic composed of 26 cantons, with federal authorities based in Bern. Switzerland is a landlocked country bordered by Italy to the south, France to the west, Germany to the north, and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east. It is geographically divided among the Swiss Plateau, the Alps, and the Jura, spanning a total area of 41,285 km2 (15,940 sq mi), and land area of 39,997 km2 (15,443 sq mi). While the Alps occupy the greater part of the territory, the Swiss population of approximately 8.5 million is concentrated mostly on the plateau, where the largest cities and economic centres are located, among them Zürich, Geneva and Basel. These cities are home to several offices of international organisations such as the headquarters of FIFA, the UN's second-largest Office, and the main building of the Bank for International Settlements. The main international airports of Switzerland are also located in these cities. A developed country, it has the highest nominal wealth per adult and the eighth-highest per capita gross domestic product, and has been considered a tax haven. It ranks highly on some international metrics, including economic competitiveness and human development. Its cities such as Zürich, Geneva and Basel rank among the highest in the world in terms of quality of life, albeit with some of the highest costs of living in the world. In 2019, IMD placed Switzerland first in attracting skilled workers. The World Economic Forum ranks it the 5th most competitive country globally. |

Strategy
Alpine Switzerland
This strategy allows you to secure most of the Alpine region, most of the time:
- The first thing you should do is to build 3 electronic factories, preferably in these 3 cities: Geneva, Bern and Zürich.
- Research factory output 2, and get the public service act policy to maximize your electronics output,
- Justify war goal "conquest" on
Liechtenstein, and make 1 artillery each in 2 cities near Liechtenstein.
- Justify war goal "conquest" on
Austria, and see if they are A.I. (most of the time) or not.
- Build 20k more troops in a city near Geneva, where your home guards are, and auto-merge them so that you have 50k troops total.
- By now, your electronic factories should be almost done building. Trade exactly 6 units of
Gold and
Copper from A.I. nations.
- Around this time, your war goal justification on Liechtenstein should be complete. Immediately declare war on it and wait for your 100 artilleries to bring the enemy troops to around ~12.5k troops, then use your 50k home guard troops to annex Liechtenstein.
- Sell your electronics to A.I. countries as soon as possible, so that you secure a decent income,
- - If
Liechtenstein is A.I.
- Your war justification on Austria should be complete by now. Immediately declare war on it, as any delay could mean another nation such as
Germany could beat you to
Austria, due to their better strategic position and more military strength.
- Use the home guards you used to annex
Liechtenstein to capture the Austrian city closest to Switzerland, and leave them there. This should lure Austria's home guards to your entrenched troops, which lets you kill their home guards.
- Once
Austria's home guards are taken out, you can set your home guards to auto-capture
Austria.
- If Austria is a player
- Build a total of around 500 artilleries on the Swiss-Austria border.
- Get around 150-200k troops split into divisions and place them on the Swiss-Austria border.
- Immediately bulk buy
Motor Parts and
Steel from other nations. You will need these to make tanks.
- Make tanks in your square cities as soon as possible. Since your conscription law is set on 'Limited', and you have 1 more square city than Austria, your ability to make tanks should be double than that of Austria's.
- Once you are confident that you are ready for the invasion, declare war and move your tanks and troops to capital snipe Vienna. This will completely stop Austria's attempts to build tanks there.
- Set your units to auto-capture
Austria.
- When the war is finished, you can (optionally) build a road from Vienna to Bern for the ease of mobilizing your units around the mountains.
- (Optional but recommended) The next thing you should do is to invade a city state with a dock, such as
Monaco or
San Marino, as the Alpine Republic is a landlocked country with no docks. A skilled player could use an Aircraft Carrier to eliminate your troops from a long distance, so securing a dock gives you a naval advantage against such threats. Move the 100 artilleries you used on Liechtenstein's troops to somewhere near those city states, and wait for the enemy's home guards to dwindle down to ~12.5k troops.
- Use the 50k home guard troops to invade and annex the city-state.
- Now that you have secured a city-state with a dock, you can sit back and develop your cities and fortify every single city in the event of an invasion. You should have a constant force of around 200k infantry stationed in your main cities, around 500 artilleries in cities that cover the most land, and anti-aircrafts stationed in your main cities. If you want, you can train them to their maximum level, so that they are more deadly. You can enact the neutrality act policy, which gives you 25% more tax income at the cost of a 300% slower war declaration time. This shouldn't matter much, as Switzerland isn't the best nation out of all European nations in terms of military strength and should be played defensively given its natural mountainous defense. While the other European nations fight each other to death, you can relax in your fortress of a nation, and MAYBE invade someone when they are the least expecting it.
Note that this strategy has an ~90% efficiency rate, and may not work on every single occasion.
True Switzerland
- Requires a lot of patience and is a very different playstyle that may not appeal to some players.
- Neutrality Act, with no allies.
- Heavily relies on trading for income.
- No expansion.
- Fortifications and heavy training.
- Very slow and relatively lax gameplay.
- Destroy anyone who dares challenge the Swiss army with an invasion.
With this playstyle you take the direct opposite of conquest. You turn yourself into an impenetrable fortress that slaughters anyone foolish enough to attempt to invade you. This is the only proper way to make use of Switzerland, as it is a country almost completely mountainous. Noting this, if you manage a large economy via trading (selling consumer goods is the best for income) and allocate research well, then you can have every city in Switzerland fortified, and have well over 10K tanks and 1M infantry, artillery, and anti-aircraft entrenched and defending your fortress of a country.
Given that you have no conquest ambitions (unlike those other European barbarians) you can spend your time training your troops to their Swiss Army status while all those foolish Europeans kill each other around you. And if you DO get declared upon, well... This is where the fun begins. Watch as MILLIONS of pathetic troops, tanks, planes, and artillery get instantly deleted for even thinking that they could challenge the Swiss mountainous defense. Your trained artillery with researched range demolishes incoming forces with ease, your infantry is researched with anti-tank weaponry, and your entrenched tanks finish off any surviving force that makes it to your mainland, all the while your planes and generals gain even more XP for all the slaughtering it has done on those silly 1K Qing tank divisions.
And even if you do somehow fall, you can rest satisfied you've killed at least 10M+ with less than 2M losses, having the enemy most likely crippled of any manpower, and make them learn why even Nazi Germany didn't bother with Switzerland in WWII.
Note: Again, this playstyle may not appeal to everyone, if you are looking for a typical conquest, you should not even choose Switzerland, as it would be a waste of the country's natural mountainous geography to NOT use it for pure defense. If you want to spice things up, capture Monaco in southern France and make a little Swiss navy to train and surprise your European cousins (if they're even alive still) or maybe piss off people all the way in Asia. If you want something more practical then create massive air force that will strike fear in the eyes of invaders, and if you really want to spice things up, then hell you could even train those, although at that point it's just overkill. Keep in mind that training is very time-consuming and depending on your patience, you may even consider ditching the country. Please choose wisely.
