Algeria

Algeria is a Tier III nation located in North Africa .

Background

After European colonists started granting independence to their colonies, France held on to a large chunk of land in Africa , which was known as French Algeria, named after the largest city of this territory, Algiers. Algeria was mainly inhabited by Arabs and Berbers, and neither of these groups liked the French. After the Sétif and Guelma killings, Algerians decided to revolt, and a long independence war went on. After a very long war, Algeria was granted its independence.

Ahmed Ben Bella was elected the first President of Algeria, and shortly after the Sand War with Morocco in 1963, Houari Bomédiène overthrew Ben Bella. He pursued industrialization with a state-owned socialist economy, and he was succeeded by Chadli Bendjedid, who made liberal economic reforms, and 'arabized' the nation.

In 1991, a political party known as the Islamic Salvation Front (or FIS) won the elections by a landslide. However, a High Council of State was appointed as Bendjedid resigned. They banned the FIS and the FIS retaliated with its own armed wing. They were massacring civilians and this eventually became an international concern.

A new president, Abdulaziz Bouteflika, was elected after this, and he worked on political stability and was elected again in 2004. However, in 2008, the Algerian Parliament amended the constitution and removed the two-term limit for presidents. After this, Bouteflika was then re-elected. At the current moment, Abdelmadjid Tebboune is the current president, elected in December 2019. He is working on fixing the country and calming down the protestors.

Geography

Terrain

The terrain of Algeria is Hilly near the major population centers. Deeper into the Sahara, its Semi-Mountainous, until finally becoming flat.

Biome

Most of Algeria has the Arid biome. The north, however, has no biome.

Borders

Algeria borders Morocco to the west, Tunisia and Libya to the east, and Mauritania, Mali, and Niger to the south.

Cities

Algeria's cities are mostly located along the northern coast. Its biggest and only city with more than a million people is Algiers, with a population of 3.2 million inhabitants. Other notable cities are Oran, a useful city to build a navy, Annaba, another important coastal city, serves the same use. But due to a lack of cities with over a million people, Algeria lacks the capability to tank spam, even though it has massive Iron reserves. With Algeria's main cities on the vulnerable northern coast, defending that area is key.

Strategy

Algeria and most of Northern Africa is put in a very dangerous place from the very start of the game with resource-hungry European nations to the north, major Middle Eastern and Arab powers to the east, and stronger African nations such as Nigeria to the south. You should immediately ally France, Spain , Italy, Egypt, Turkey, and Nigeria. Of course, it is impossible to ally all of these nations, but being allied with at least 1 nearby power (preferably European) will provide a great boom to your security.

You should quickly move to conquer Tunisia, as usually it is quickly seized by Italy, France, or Spain. Invading Tunisia also allows you to reap the benefit of the nation's rich Phosphate reserves. Then, if Libya hasn't been conquered yet, quickly annex it, and then move to annex Morocco, Western Sahara, and Mauritania. This gives you the chance to develop and strengthen a Mediterranean and Atlantic naval fleet. You should have also expanded southward as to take some land from Nigeria (i.e.: Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger). If the Nigeria player isn't very competent, you should seize Chad as to prevent them from forming the Sokoto Caliphate.

If you have managed to follow this strategy perfectly, you should now have a population of approximately 43 million and have massive reserves of many important resources in the game, and you are now in a great position to expand and take over Africa.
