Sweden

Sweden is a Tier III Nation located in Scandinavia, a region in Northern Europe . Sweden borders Norway, Finland, and Denmark (via Ölesund Bridge). Sweden is the strongest Nordic nation at the start of the game thanks to it starting with Tier II cities, having reserves of important resources and also possessing a favourable geographic location.

Sweden is rarely chosen by players due to it's low manpower capacity and vulnerability to other nations like Russia and Germany. However, with proper strategy and management, Sweden can become a formidable power in Northern Europe as it can use its geographic location that makes it mostly surrounded by the Baltic and North Sea's with Arctic and Mountainous terrain in the north to defend itself with.

Background

Sweden became known to the rest of the world through the Vikings who emerged in the 9th century to raid much of northern Europe. In the centuries to come, Sweden would become a Christian kingdom.

Base Statistics

Sweden is home to roughly roughly 4 million people. The nation starts off with an income of $397,987. $389,940 from tax and $8,047 from resources. Sweden earns slightly more than it's supposed to, this is thanks to the country being one of the few to start with Tier II cities at the start of the game alongside Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Resources

Sweden boasts reserves of numerous resources, these are Copper, Gold, Iron, Oil and Tungsten.

Resources of Sweden
Copper +2.1
Gold +1.1
Iron +1
Oil +2.44
Tungsten +1.22

Military

Sweden starts out on the Volunteer conscription law and thus has a manpower cap of 75,411 with a manpower gain of 682 at the start of the game.

Sweden begins with one Home Guard division consisting of 20,000 infantry located in the capital of Stockholm.

Geography

Sweden Terrain

Terrain

Most of Sweden consists of flat terrain except in the north-western parts of the country, where the Semi-Mountainous and Mountainous terrain types are located.

Biomes

Sweden does not possess any biomes except Arctic and the seasonal biomes of Mild Winter and Severe Winter. The Arctic biome is located in the far north of the country, covering a total of 5 cities spread across 5 different tiles.

The Mild Winter biome begins setting in during the month of November and receding during the month of February. It stretches across the entire country except for Scania during the months of November and February. During the months of December and January, the Mild Winter biome retreats into Scania until it recedes back into most of the country during February.

The Severe Winter biome begins setting in during the month of December and recedes during the month of January. It covers the entirety of the country except for Scania before it's replaced by the Mild Winter biome during the month of February.

Borders

Sweden shares an international land border with two nations. The countries that border Sweden are:

Sweden also has a long coast along the Baltic Sea and some coast along the Kattegat strait apart of the greater North Sea. This makes the country share maritime borders with Denmark via the Öresund strait.

Cities

Sweden has a total of 36 cities, with only 1 of them surpassing the 1 million population mark. With all cities combined, Sweden's population becomes a total of 3,770,548 people. Sweden's largest city is also it's capital, that being the city of Stockholm with a population of 1,264,000 people, making up almost a third of the nation's entire population. Sweden's second largest city is Gothenburg with a population of 537,797 people, and the nation's third largest city is Malmö with a population of 269,349 people.

Other major cities that have above 100k population are Uppsala and Västerås.

Politics

Ideology

Sweden starts off as a Non-Aligned nation at the start of the game.

Balkanized Sweden

Formables

Sweden can form a total of 3 formables, with those formables being:

Releasables

Sweden cores two releasables, these are Scania, located in the deep south of the country, and Norrland, located in the far north of the country.

Threats

  • Any of the Nordic countries invading you to form the Kalmar Union.
  • Any European country invading you to form the European Union.
  • The United Kingdom may expand into the region and invade you.
  • Russia may expand into the region and invade you.

Strategy

Sweden starts out as a relatively weak nation compared to the other countries of Europe. This is due to it's small population and manpower capacity, but Sweden can quickly rise to the status of a regional power or even possibly superpower if played correctly.

Opening Moves

To start off with, activate the Ignore Safety Regulations policy for the 35% factory output increase and 20% building cost decrease and build 4 electronic factories. Try to hire a Chief Judge leader if you have one available, he will help a lot in other steps of this strategy. Justify on Estonia and Latvia first to quickly secure them before Russia does. Save up your political power for the Limited conscription law which is needed cause of your small population.

Buy the resources needed for your electronic factories and also make infantry out of your entire manpower stockpile. Make sure to choose a doctrine of your choice, preferably Static Lines or Manoeuvre Warfare as Sweden cannot offset the manpower decrease from Specialization and Massed Attack decreases the experience of your troops. Sell your Electronics in units of 5 or less to as many AI countries as you can. This should give you an income of 5-6 million. Be sure to make steel, motor, fertilizer and civilian factories next so you can sell Consumer Goods and also gain a 25% base stability increase from them.

Set all your economic laws except Tax Laws to the maximum and invade Estonia and Latvia with your infantry. Justify on Finland and Denmark after this as you wanna form both the Swedish Empire for the modifier and the Kalmar Union for more population and a better position in Europe.

When your steel and motor factories are done, make 600-800 tanks in Stockholm and declare war on Finland. You should be able to quickly take over their cities and then be able to form the Swedish Empire afterwards. This will give you a population increase of around 5 million people and also give you a very good formable modifier which enhances your military capabilities.

Colonization

If you wanna grow your power behind the scenes, colonizing other parts of the world is a good idea. The best areas to colonize in are North America and Africa due to there being a large abundance of AI nations and a large population base in both continents.

African Colonization

Justify on the countries located in West Africa, those being Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal and so on. These countries have possess a lot of population as well as resources, including Phosphate, Titanium, Aluminum among other resource reserves. This colony will help grow your maximum manpower capacity as well, one of the main weaknesses of Sweden.

North American Colonization

Justify on the countries located in the Carribean region, those being the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba and so on. These countries also possess a lot of population but not as many resources as West Africa does. Be wary of the United States while colonizing in North America, however, as they may grow hostile and feel threatened by your presence in the continent.

Growing your strength

After having formed the Swedish Empire and/or Kalmar Union, you can now grow your strength on the European continent by either colonizing or developing your cities and economy. You should make an effort at transitioning away from trade income as the game goes on and focus more on tax and resource income instead. Sweden can easily do this transition as developing cities are cheap for the country and Sweden can easily achieve quantum computing without much difficulty.

You can go any for any ideology of your choice, but Fascism is recommended as Sweden already leans into the upkeep reduction aspect and you'll be able to make a large standing army with Fascism thanks to the upkeep reduction. You can also maintain your stability high at all times with Fascism thanks to the big base stability increase and +2 stability on every offensive war. This will make you a formidable power in Europe and you can involve yourself in wars on the continent if you so wish.

Research Juggling

Although Sweden's small population may be seen as a weakness, it is also a strength as you can exploit this to your advantage. All countries that are below 100 million population get a passive corruption decrease depending on how big the population is below that threshold. Sweden only starts with roughly 4 million population, so you get a passive decrease of almost 0.25 corruption. If you can get a Chief Judge leader, this allows you to do something called "research juggling". This will allow you to get quantum computing faster than any other country and also advance technologically super quickly which you can use to your advantage.

Opening Moves

To achieve quantum computing as fast as possible and research juggle effectively, we will take advantage of three policies. These are Advance the Research Bureau, the Computer Advancement Act and Underground Labs. All these policies combined give you a total research output of +98%. Make sure to research the first two boxes of the research section in the research tab and save your research power for the third box. You must hire a Head of Research leader in order to boost your research output further if you get him in your leaders pool.

You'll need to have a stable source of income to sustain this as you'll need to be able to upkeep max research, education and anti-corruption spending in your economic laws.

Juggling

While you play normally, keep an eye on your corruption and make sure to turn off Underground Labs temporarily if it starts becoming too high. Be aware that if you have a Chief Judge and max anti-corruption spending, you'll only get around a 0.05 increase in corruption from activating Underground Labs, so you can have the policy active for a very long time until you have to disable it temporarily. This is the juggling part of the strategy as you have to constantly activate and deactivate Underground Labs to ensure your corruption won't spiral.

Make sure to also pay attention to your supply of electronics, as the Computer Advancement Act consumes a sizeable amount of electronics to give you a research increase. If you see yourself in a deficit of electronics, make more electronic factories as they're pretty easy and cheap to make.

Final Steps

If you've done everything right, you should be able to get quantum in early-mid 2022 or possibly earlier if you get lucky with certain events like Research Intervention and Military Research which give you research power.

This strategy has now made you one of the most technologically advanced countries in the server, and you can now massively scale with research into the economic sector or have a strong and formidable military if you go into the infantry sector. You can also turn off Underground Labs after achieving quantum computing and replace it with something else.
