The history of Togo is not very well known before the Berlin Conference. During the 16th to 19th centuries, different (local) empires and tribal federations ruled over Togo. It's likely that |
Colonialism
Early colonial Togo was mostly made up of major slave trade harbors made by the European colonial powers (primarily Portugal), which gave the territory of modern day Togo (aswell as the regions surrounding it) the name "The Slave Coast". The coast of Togo itself only had one minor harbor, Porto Seguro, a Portuguese fort.
German Rule
The German Empire established colonies in Africa
bduring the Berlin Conference (1884-1885) which included the territories of modern day Togo and
Western Togoland. The Empire established the Protectorate of Togoland, which would be recognized by the
French Empire (who controlled
Benin) in 1885. As part of the prelude to the First World War, the German Empire expanded inland to their claimed territories in Togo and
Ghana. German Togoland became one of the more well established German colonies at the time, with the first rail line between Lomé and Aného opening in 1905, and the colony becoming relatively self-supporting.
World War I
During the First World War, German Togoland was quickly invaded, and German forces there surrendered less than a month after the invasion in August 1914. Following the war, Togoland became formally became a League of Nations mandate that was divided for administritive purposes between Great Britain (Western Togoland) and the French Empire (Togo).
Post-World War Status
Togo (and Togoland in general) became an extremely confusing territory after the World Wars. Serving as a League of Nations protectorate, while later being transferred throughout multiple constitutions under France, Togo gained independence in April 1960 after having severed UN trusteeship status, aswell as severing ties with France. Sylvanus Olympio would be the first leader of the First Republic of Togo.
Post-Independence Turmoil
After its independence, Togo held a referendum in 1961, changing the constitution. In the same year, Sylvanus Olympio would be elected president. In 1963, Olympio was assasinated in a coup, which saw Nicolas Grunitzky (former prime minister under French Togoland) become president. A new constitution was (again) installed after a referendum in 1963. In 1966, an assasination attempt was made at Grunitzky, but failed. In 1967, Kléber Dudjo became president after a succesful coup to the Grunitzky government. He banned all political parties, and became dictator of Togo. Étienne Eyadéma (one of the people responsible for the coup of Grunitzky) became president in 1972. Étienne died in 2005 from a heart attack. Papa Gnassingbé was elected president in 2005, and has been serving as the nation's president ever since.

Strategy
Togo has a city with 1 million or more population, that means you can make tanks, so use it to your advantage. Your immediate threat is Nigeria, but if you're skilled you can hold off their invasion: Make Electronic Factories so you have enough money for all the Tanks. Build lots of tanks and invade
Benin so you're closer to Lagos,
Nigeria's most valuable city. When
Nigeria declares war (or you do a surprise attack) send all your tanks to Lagos and entrench them there. Now go take Nigeria's capital and sit on Lagos and Abuja until they're exhausted from the war or until they send white peace or surrender.
Trivia
- It one of the smallest nations that have a city with more than 1 million population, the smallest being nearby
Liberia and
Cote d'Ivoire.
