Dice

“Life's a gamble: it's always sink or swim... Betting on the unknown is more interesting than a sure win.”
—Dice talking to his daughter in Archanea Saga

Dice is a playable character in Fire Emblem: Archanea Saga and Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem. He is the father of Malice who ends up joining Rickard in taking treasures from the Archanean royal palace after its fall to Dolhr. He is a Fighter whose garb resembles that of a viking.

In his first appearance in 'Thieves Gang of Justice', the third episode of Archanea Saga, he is a recruitable enemy alongside his daughter, Malice. In New Mystery of the Emblem, he joins at the end of Chapter 10 in the main story along with his daughter. He is also a recruitable enemy, again alongside his daughter, in the third of the downloadable chapters of New Mystery of the Emblem, set before the events of the game.

Profile

Dice is a mercenary with terrible luck, constantly scraping by with the help of his daughter Malice. A capable fighter, he, along with his daughter, join forces with Rickard's party when, prior to the War of Shadows, both infiltrate the enemy-occupied royal palace of Archanea to loot its treasures.

Following the War of Shadows, Dice and Malice are caught up in the chaos when rebels stir trouble in Talys while the nation is celebrating Princess Caeda's engagement to Marth of Altea. Ogma manages to talk to Malice, and she and Dice join his side in stopping the rebels.

During the War of Heroes, Dice, along with his daughter, barge their way into the Altean army's camp, and though they demand supposedly high pay, their demand is only for a few hundred gold, which the army easily obliges, taking them into their service.

Following the war, Dice is paid handsomely for his service, but he subsequently loses it all while gambling.

Personality

Dice is both a gambling addict and a terrible gambler. His habits lead to constant debts, and though he is a talented mercenary, he is only barely able to stay afloat through his and Malice's mercenary work.

Overall

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Dice generally will cap his HP and Strength, along with average Skill, Luck, and Speed to boot. The only setback are his defenses: with a growth rate of 15%, Dice is likely to get low Defense, making him de facto a glass cannon. Regardless, he is still useful unit to have if Barst, Bord, or Cord were not properly trained or died. Should one seek to reclass Dice, Pirate/Berserker is recommended.

If the reclass sets have been merged, Dice's strangely high Resistance growth can be beneficial as a Dracoknight.

Ending

New Mystery of the Emblem

Gambling Sellsword
After the war, Dice received an outrageous reward from Prince Marth. He soon spent all of it gambling, however.

Etymology

Dice (the plural form of die) are common tools used in games of chance. This is appropriate given Dice's love of gambling.

Trivia

  • Dice is one of the few characters to have higher growth rates in the original SNES game than in New Mystery of the Emblem. In particular, Dice's Luck and Defense growths are much lower in the DS remake.
  • Dice's love of gambling is reflected by his choice of weapon, the Luck-based Devil Axe.
