Tamil Eelam is a proposed independent state in Sri Lanka that would be created for the Tamil-speaking minority population in the northern and eastern regions of the country. The idea of Tamil Eelam emerged in the 1970s as a result of tensions between the Tamil minority and the Sinhalese majority in Sri Lanka.

The Tamil-speaking population in Sri Lanka has a distinct culture and history that sets them apart from the Sinhalese majority. The Tamil people have long sought greater autonomy and political representation in Sri Lanka, and the idea of Tamil Eelam emerged as a response to what many Tamils see as discrimination and marginalization by the Sri Lankan government.

The creation of Tamil Eelam has been a controversial and divisive issue in Sri Lanka for several decades. The Sri Lankan government has been opposed to the idea of a separate Tamil state, and the conflict between the government and Tamil separatist groups has resulted in significant violence and human rights abuses. A civil war between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers, a militant group that sought to establish Tamil Eelam, lasted for over 25 years and ended in 2009 with the defeat of the Tamil Tigers.
