Background
Yugra is an ancient name for the lands and peoples east of the northern Ural Mountains in Russia. The term was used in Russian annals from the 12th to the 17th centuries to refer to the region inhabited by the Khanty and Mansi peoples, who speak Ugric languages. Yugra is also the source of the name of the Ugric language family, which includes Hungarian. The first accounts of Yugra come from Arab and Byzantine sources, who describe the region as a land of long days and nights, where merchants traded with the natives and encountered a mysterious golden idol. The idol, known as the Golden Lady of the Obians, was apparently an object of worship for the Yugrans. It appeared on several maps of the region until the 17th century.
In the 16th century, Yugra came under the control of the Russian state, which exploited its natural resources and imposed taxes and Orthodox Christianity on the natives. The Yugrans resisted the Russian expansion and maintained their traditional way of life until the 18th and 19th centuries, when they were gradually assimilated or marginalized by the influx of Russian settlers and traders. During the Soviet era, Yugra was part of the Khanty-Mansi National Okrug, which was established in 1930 for the Khanty and Mansi peoples, although the majority of the population were Russian settlers. The national okrug became an autonomous okrug in 1977. In 2003, the word “Yugra” was added to the official name of the okrug as a symbol of its historical and ethnic identity The Khanty and Mansi peoples also participated in World War II, fighting against the Nazi invaders. According to some sources, about 10,000 Khanty and Mansi soldiers and partisans took part in the war, and many of them were awarded with medals and orders. Today, Yugra is a part of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, a federal subject of Russia that has a high economic importance due to its oil and gas production. The Khanty and Mansi peoples constitute only a small minority of the population; but their languages and cultures enjoy a special status in the region. |
