Background
Hexi is a historical region in northwest China that includes parts of modern-day Gansu and Ningxia provinces. The name "Hexi" literally means "west of the river", referring to the Yellow River, which flows through the region. Hexi was an important part of the ancient Silk Road trade route, which connected China with the Mediterranean world. It was also a cultural crossroads, where various ethnic groups, including the Han, Hui, Tibetan, Mongolian, and Uyghur peoples, interacted and exchanged ideas.
