Background

Hubei (湖北) is a province located in central China, with its capital in Wuhan. It is situated in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and is the 13th most populous province in China, with a population of over 58 million people as of 2020. The province has a long history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the Neolithic era.

Hubei is known for its beautiful natural scenery and cultural heritage sites, including the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, Mount Wudang, and the ancient city of Jingzhou. It is also an important transportation hub, with several major highways, railways, and waterways passing through the province.

Hubei is associated with the historical state of E that existed during the Western Zhou dynasty (c. 1045 – 771 BCE). Its name means 'north of the lake', referring to Dongting Lake. It borders Henan to the north, Anhui and Jiangxi to the east, Hunan to the south, and Chongqing and Shaanxi to the west. The high-profile Three Gorges Dam is located at Yichang in the west of the province.
