Hejaz is a releaseable of Saudi Arabia, It is located in western Saudi Arabia.

Background

Following the Ottoman declaration of a jihad against the Entente in WW1, the British began to enter into negotiations with the Sharif of Mecca. Relations between the Sharif and the Ottoman Empire had already been strained when the Young Turks took over the empire in 1908, so he agreed to work the British if they would support the establishment of an independent Arab kingdom. Following the execution of other Arab nationalists by Ottoman authorities, Hejaz expelled the Ottomans from the region. In 1916, Hussein bin Ali, the Sharif of Mecca, declared himself King of Hejaz.

At the end of the Great War, disagreements broke out between King Hussein and the British on matters concerning Palestine and Syria. After failing to ratify the Treaty of Versailles and various other treaties, negotiations were suspended between the United Kingdom and Hejaz in 1924. Soon after, the British withdrew support from Hejaz in favor of the Saudis.

In 1924, the Sultanate of Nejd invaded the Kingdom of Hejaz. Without British Gold to bribe the Bedouins to fight for him, King Hussein's government collapsed. On October 13, 1924, Mecca was captured by Saudi forces and Hussein abdicated the throne. In a last-ditch effort to preserve Hejazi independence, a group of merchants from Yanbu, Medina and Jeddah collected their wealth together to form a makeshift army. The Hejazi army managed to hold onto the cities until late 1925, when the Saudi blockade imposed on Jeddah caused the army to disintegrate. By the end of December, Jeddah had capitulated, and Hejaz had been conquered by Saudi forces.

In 1932, the unification of Nejd and Hejaz led to the formation of Saudi Arabia. Today, Hejaz is a Saudi province.
