Background
The Hui people are an ethnic group in China known for their practice of Islam. (回族) literal meaning: Islam ethnicity. They are one of the 56 officially recognized ethnic groups in China, and are the largest Muslim ethnic group in the country. The Hui people are predominantly found in central and western China, although they are dispersed throughout the country.
The Hui people are descended from various Muslim ethnic groups and communities that settled in China over the centuries, including Arab, Persian, and Central Asian traders and soldiers who came to China along the Silk Road. They have their own distinct culture, language, and traditions, but are integrated into Chinese society and share many cultural and linguistic similarities with the Han Chinese majority.
The Hui people are known for their contributions to Chinese culture and history, including in areas such as architecture, food, music, and literature. They have also faced discrimination and persecution at various times in Chinese history, particularly during the Cultural Revolution and in more recent years due to tensions between the Chinese government and certain Muslim groups in China.
