Fire Bro

Super Mario Paper Mario Mario Party Mario & Luigi

Fire Bros. are enemies which first appear in Super Mario Bros. 3.

Profile

Physical description

Fire Bro hair SMO

Fire Bros. were originally depicted with red skin (orange in artwork) and wear a black shell and helmet. Since Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Fire Bros. wear a red helmet and a red shell. Fire Bros. in Paper Mario: Sticker Star retain their red shells and helmets from prior Paper Mario games but no longer have arm bands, and the seams within their shells are white instead of yellow. In Super Mario Odyssey, Fire Bros. are revealed to have four clumps of fiery-colored hair on their heads.

Behavior

Fire Bros. are a variant of Hammer Bros. that throw Fireballs at Mario, Luigi, and other playable character. Regardless, the fireballs thrown by Fire Bros. travel fast and bounce on the ground, similarly to the fireballs thrown by Fire Mario. In their debut appearance, Fire Bros. spit fireballs, but since New Super Mario Bros., they throw fireballs instead, consistent with other Hammer Bro variants.

In Super Mario series

Super Mario Bros. 3

Fire Bro. NES Classic

Only three Fire Brothers are ever encountered. The first two are encountered together in an Enemy Course in Desert Land, accessible only after breaking a boulder with a hammer, and after defeating them, Mario or Luigi obtains a Magic Whistle. The last Fire Brother is encountered in the first Hand Trap level of Dark Land, atop a bridge by the beginning of the level. All three Fire Brothers face in the direction of Mario and Luigi while moving back and forth in a small area, occasionally jumping and attacking with one or two projectiles at a time. A Fire Brother rewards 1000 points if defeated from a stomp. A Fire Bro can also be defeated from either Mario or Luigi jumping below the block they are standing on, being hit by a Koopa Shell or a fireball, a tail swipe from Raccoon Mario or Tanooki Mario, the invincibility effects of a Starman, or a hammer thrown by Hammer Mario; in every case, they give 100 points when defeated.

The fourth letter of Princess Toadstool, shown after completing Giant Land, mentions the Fire Brother indirectly as a thief who stole a Whistle and escaped to the east of the desert.

The map icon of a Fire Brother is the same as a Hammer Brother's in the Nintendo Entertainment System version. In both the Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 remakes, the map icon of Fire Brothers was adjusted to resemble an actual Fire Brother.

Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3

Besides retaining their role in the main game, Fire Brothers also appear in a few of the World-e levels: Bowser's Last Stand, Koopaling Confusion. and Bowser's Airship 2.

In Bowser's Last Stand, Fire Brothers with the other Hammer Brother types in the first of three doors that leads to a tweaked version of the Hand Traps. Near the end, just after encountering a Sledge Brother, two Fire Brothers have to be fought by Mario or Luigi before he can enter the Warp Pipe out of that section.

In Koopaling Confusion, one Fire Brother appears just before the Warp Pipe that leads out of the first section of the level.

In Bowser's Airship 2, three Fire Brothers are encountered halfway through the level, just before the second Advance Coin.

New Super Mario Bros.

Fire Bros in World 8-7

The game has only two Fire Bros., both appearing together in World 8-7, right after the Checkpoint Flag. Fire Bros. attack the same way as in Super Mario Bros. 3. The sound effect of Fire Bros. throwing fireballs is the same as when Fire Mario does it. Fire Bros. can be defeated from either a stomp, Mario or Luigi hitting a Brick Block it is standing on from below, or the effects of either a Fire Flower, Blue Shell, Mega Mushroom, or a Starman.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Fire Bro. Ice World

Fire Brothers retain their attacks from before. A unique sound effect was made for when Fire Bros. fling fireballs, differentiating from the sound of Fire Mario throwing them. A fireball thrown by a Fire Brother can be nullified from an Ice Ball thrown by Ice Mario or Penguin Mario. Fire Bros. are more common than before, with the game including a total of nine of them. Fire Bros. first appear in the level World 2-3, followed by World 3-4, World 6-6, and lastly World 9-7. Fire Bros. received an elemental opposite, Ice Bros., which shoot out Ice Balls to attack, and they are more common than both Fire Bros. and Hammer Bros.

Only one Fire Bro appears in World 2-3, atop a row of Brick Blocks. It constantly throws fireballs into a pathway leading to the third Star Coin of the level.

Three separate Fire Brothers appear in World 3-4. All of them threaten Mario or another playable character by throwing fireballs as he faces Ice Blocks.

Three Fire Brothers are stationed together in World 6-6. They are atop the dark, subterranean river, near the two Warp Pipes leading to the normal and alternate exits of the level respectively.

The last two Fire Brothers appear near the end of World 9-7, standing on vertically moving platforms on either end of the level's third Star Coin. Since it is enclosed by frozen coins, fireballs from a nearby Fire Bro are required to melt enough coins until the player's character can reach it himself, unless he is in his Fire form, in which case his fireballs can melt them.

New Super Mario Bros. 2

Fire Bro Secret Cavern

Fire Bros. behave identically as before. They are as rare in the base game as in New Super Mario Bros., appearing in only one level, World 6-3, although one appears in the Second Course of the downloadable Coin Challenge Pack B. Unlike New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the sound effect of Fire Bros. throwing fireballs sounds similar to that of fireballs being thrown by Gold Mario/Silver Luigi. Activating a Gold Ring turns every Fire Bro into a Gold Bro, like with Hammer Bros. and Boomerang Bros, until the effects of the Gold Ring expire. Fire Bros. can be defeated from either a stomp or the effects of either a Fire Flower, Super Leaf, Gold Flower, Mega Mushroom, Starman, or Invincibility Leaf.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

Fire Bro Tower

Fire Brothers make a reappearance, behaving identically as in previous New Super Mario Bros. titles. The fireballs thrown by Fire Bros. has a wide range and moves faster than most projectiles. Fireballs thrown by a Fire Bro can serve a useful purpose, since they can light up dark areas, melt frozen blocks, burn open Chestnuts, and ignite Bob-ombs. Just as before, Fire Bros. can be defeated using any of the same methods as in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but with the inclusion of the Bubble Baby Yoshi, though they cannot swallow a Fire Bro by themselves. A total of 29 Fire Brothers appear, and they are the most common of the Hammer Bro variants.

In Fire Snake Cavern, two Fire Brothers appear near the beginning of the level, with one blocking a non-important passage with a decent amount of coins. Another pair of them appears near the end of the level, with one of them standing just below a Warp Pipe leading to the third Star Coin of the level. Any Baby Yoshi can eat incoming fireballs thrown directly at them. Fire Bros. can flip on their back temporarily, unlike previous games, if a Glowing Baby Yoshi spins around at a close range to let loose a pulse of bright light.

A single Fire Brother, along with a Goomba, roams a certain maze section of Layer-Cake Desert as an Enemy Course that the player can run into. Depending on random chance, the player might face off against one, two, or three Fire Brothers in any given encounter. Regardless, the prize for defeating every Fire Brother in an Enemy Course is a star.

In Prickly Goombas!, just shortly after the Checkpoint Flag, the player would run into four separate Fire Brothers, with the second one found freeing a row of five Goombas from Chestnuts, just under the level's third Star Coin.

In Light Blocks, Dark Tower, near the exit, one Fire Brother is seen standing on a set of light blocks above one of the level's light switches. Shortly after this, another Fire Brother is stationed on a pair of light blocks just above the Warp Pipe that leads to the exit, with the Star Coin barely above his head. The low ceiling makes it tricky to simply squeeze into the small space and jump on the Fire Brother, while a warp pipe in the center of the ceiling constantly drops Bob-ombs into room for the Fire Brother to ignite with his fireballs. A method for acquiring the Star Coin is by grabbing a Bob-omb and throwing it at the Fire Brother, both defeating it and collecting the Star Coin simultaneously.

Fire Brothers appear prominently in Slide Lift Tower, where eight are scattered throughout the level. This level marks the first instance of Fire Bros. appearing in a fortress or castle level since Bowser's Last Stand of Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3.

In Snaking above Mist Valley, just after the Checkpoint Flag, a Fire Brother is encountered standing on a row of ? Blocks, and another two are seen throwing fireballs from atop floating rock platforms.

In Ludwig's Clockwork Castle, one Fire Brother appears just before the level's first Star Coin, and another is encountered shortly before the last geared platform of the level, leading to the boss door and occasionally revealing the presence of the level's third and final Star Coin.

Fire Brothers also appear in Challenge Mode. The first special challenge, Fire, Bro!, has the player face off against a single pair of Fire Brothers on the right side of the screen while standing on a single bare block in a room of spikes, with the objective being to dodge the enemies' fireballs for 15 (bronze), 25 (silver), or 40 (gold) seconds, with the Fire Brothers disappearing and the challenge ending after 50 seconds of surviving. The 17th special challenge, Seriously! Fire, Bro!, is a harder, four-star version of it, since it involves two pairs of Fire Brothers, one on each side of the player, who is positioned on a single bare block in the very center of a room of spikes. Fire Brothers also appear in the ninth Coin Collection challenge, Prickly Goomba's Coinless Run, a three-star challenge where the player must collect five (bronze), two (silver), or zero (gold) coins while running through the level Prickly Goombas!.

New Super Luigi U

Fire Brothers behave identically as in New Super Mario Bros. U. A total of 29 Fire Brothers make an appearance.

In Piranhas in the Dark, two separate Fire Brothers are encountered near the end of the level.

As with New Super Mario Bros. U, a single Fire Brother, along with a Goomba, roams a certain maze section of Layer-Cake Desert as an Enemy Course that the player can run into. Depending on random chance, the player might face off against one, two, or three Fire Brothers in any given encounter. The price for defeating all the Fire Brothers in an Enemy Course is a star.

In Slippery Rope Ladders, just before the Warp Pipe to the Goal Pole, a pair of Fire Brothers are seen melting a group of frozen coins. In a short amount of time, they would melt enough of the frozen coins to expose the level's third Star Coin, and eventually, the level's 8-bit Luigi Easter Egg.

In Shish-Kebab Tower, two Fire Brothers are stationed on either end of a small section, near the beginning of the level. Another is seen just shortly near the end. To safely traverse down a pathway to the level's third Star Coin and the boss door, it is recommended that the player take out the Fire Brother first to make the area more safe.

In Fire and Ice, two Fire Brothers free Goombas from Chestnuts on either side of the player. Another is stationed on a row of Brick Blocks halfway through the level, while the last one stands atop a bridge over the third Star Coin of the level.

In All Aboard!, every type of Hammer Brother is featured, much like the first Hand Trap in Super Mario Bros. 3. As with the first Hand Trap, a Fire Brother is the first enemy encountered in the level.

Halfway through Switch-Lift Express, a Fire Brother throws fireballs through a wall, indicating that that particular wall has a hidden section holding a switch. Another Fire Brother is found under the level's second Star Coin, while the third Fire Brother, found near the end of the level, stands under a switch that must be pressed to shift a metal block to open a path to the level's third Star Coin.

Fire Brothers are prominently featured in Stonecrush Tower (the game's equivalent of Slide Lift Tower), which features six of them scattered across the level.

Fire Brothers make one last appearance in Magmaw River Cruise, which features two of them on stone platforms near the end of the level, occasionally blocked off by vertical Stretch Blocks.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury

Fire Bro 3D

The game is the first instance of Fire Bros. appearing in a 3D installment of the Super Mario series. They throw two fireballs at Mario or another playable character before jumping to another position, similarly to how Hammer Bros. and Boomerang Bros. act. The fireballs thrown by Fire Bros. have the ability to travel through Clear Pipes and dissipate upon hitting walls, unlike the fireballs thrown by players, which bounce off of walls. Some Fire Bros. stand on Goomba Towers, commanding them, and defeating the Fire Bro defeats not only it but also any Goomba Tower associated with them. Fire Bros. can be defeated from either a stomp or the effects of either a Fire Flower, Super Bell, Super Leaf, Boomerang Flower, Lucky Bell, Starman, Mega Mushroom, Invincibility Leaf, or Invincibility Bell. It is possible for fireballs thrown by Fire Bros. to defeat other enemies on contact, including other Fire Bros. In enemy blockades, having the Fire Bros. either face each other or get behind one another causes the Fire Bros. to defeat each other at the same time. If a fireball thrown by Fire Mario hits one thrown by a Fire Bro, this cancels out both projectiles.

Fire Bros. are very common, more than any other Hammer Bro type. A total of 60 Fire Bros. make an appearance. The first Fire Bro is found near the end of Double Cherry Pass, followed by two in the last room of Mystery House Melee, another pair in The Bullet Bill Express, three in Fire Bros. Hideout #1, one in Fire Bros. Hideout #2 atop a Goomba Tower of nine Goombas, one in Fire Bros. Hideout #3, four in Bowser's Bob-omb Brigade, six in Fort Fire Bros., seven in Fire Bros. Hideout #4, two in Bowser's Lava Lake Keep, three in Spiky Spike Bridge, one near the end of The Bowser Express, three in The Great Tower of Bowser Land, five in Back to Hands-On Hall, six in Faster Fort Fire Bros., four in Towering Sunshine Seaside, six in Spiky Spike Bridge Sneak, and lastly three in Champion's Road.

The Bowser's Fury campaign of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury introduces a variety of Fire Bros. with cat ears and fur, Cat Fire Bros., which appear in Pipe Path Tower and Mount Magmeow.

Super Mario Odyssey

Fire Bro. Mario

Fire Bros. return as enemies. They behave similarly as in Super Mario 3D World, but they can jump much higher than Mario. Fire Bros. are encountered in the Luncheon Kingdom, where they each wear a chef hat, and in the Wooded Kingdom, where they each wear their usual helmet. A Fire Bro can be captured by Mario after removing its headgear with a Cap Throw, also revealing the top of a Fire Bro's head for the first time. Capturing a Fire Bro allows Mario to jump higher and throw fireballs almost in the manner of Fire Mario. The fireballs can be used to light unlit torches to open pathways, as well as reveal certain Power Moons.

Super Mario Maker 2

Fire Bro. Castle

Fire Bros. are placeable enemies exclusive to the Super Mario 3D World style, despite them debuting in Super Mario Bros. 3, one of the game's styles. Fire Bros. behave like they do in the mainline games, added with their abilities from Super Mario 3D World, including their thrown fireballs still being able to travel through the Clear Pipes. Fire Bros. can be defeated from either a stomp or the effects of either a Fire Flower, Super Bell, or a Super Star.

This is the first game in which Fire Bros. were given a larger counterpart, Heavy Fire Bro, which are essentially Sledge Bros. that can throw large fireballs.

In Super Mario Bros. & Friends: When I Grow Up

Forest Ranger
"Mario the forest ranger is on the lookout for fire bugs. He has just spotted Fire Brother who is setting a fire in the forest. Fire Brother is going to be in big trouble because damaging forest land is a serious crime."
—Forest Ranger description

A Fire Bro is shown to be an arsonist in the "Forest Ranger" coloring page, in which it spits fire to start a forest fire.

In Paper Mario series

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Paper Fire Bro. Old

Only one Fire Bro appears, Flare, who is one of three members of the Glitz Pit team, Hamma, Bamma, & Flare. Flare attacks by spitting fireballs at his opponents, just as Fire Bros. do in Super Mario Bros. 3. The Fire Bro also has a defense point requiring some quick strategy to defeat him.

Super Paper Mario

Fire Bro Card

Fire Bros. are enemies which Mario encounters at the steps of Castle Bleck as well as in the Flipside Pit of 100 Trials. Fire Bros. behave the same way as in Super Mario Bros. 3. Some Fire Bros. have the ability to flip between dimensions. Fire Bros. can be defeated from any attack.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star

Paper Fire Bro. New
A New Paper Fire Bro.

Fire Bros. are enemies found in Rugged Road, Rumble Volcano and Bowser Jr.'s Flotilla. They have a bigger rarity than in New Super Mario Bros. U. The only attack of a Fire Bro is throwing a fireball at Mario. Because of their fire-elemental status, Fire Bros. are unaffected by all fire-based stickers, such as Fire Flower and Burnhammer, but this means that they take twice the amount of damage from ice-based stickers, such as Ice Flower or Chillhammer. Fire Bros. are assisted mostly by Shiny Paratroopas. Touching a Fire Bro's fireball outside battle causes Mario to lose three HP. The fireballs are slightly easier to dodge than the ice balls from the Ice Bros. Using a cold-based Thing sticker, including either a Shaved Ice, Air Conditioner, or the Refrigerator, turns the Fire Bros. into Ice Bros.

Paper Mario: Color Splash

Paper Fire Bro. Team

Fire Bros. retain both their design and behavior from before. While they still take critical damage from ice-based attacks, Fire Bros. now also take regular damage from fire-based attacks. They appear in Fortune Island, Redpepper Volcano, Redpepper Crater, and Black Bowser's Castle. There are Fire Bros. in Redpepper Volcano commanded by a blue Snifit. After their defeat, another Snifit is seen training a Fire Bro to throw fireballs at the beginning of the level.

Paper Mario: The Origami King

Fire Bros. are allies, unlike previous games, with Origami Fire Bros. filling in as the enemies instead.

In Mario Baseball series

Mario Superstar Baseball

Fire Bro. Baseball

Fire Bro appears as an unlockable playable character, though as a palette swap of Hammer Bro. This is the first playable appearance of a Fire Bro in general. Fire Bro uses a stylized baseball bat, unlike Hammer Bros. and Bommerang Bros., which use a hammer and boomerang, respectively. Fire Bro is slightly slower than his counterparts. In Challenge Mode, Fire Bro is a member of Bowser's team, Bowser Monsters.

Mario Super Sluggers

Fire Bro. Baseball Batter Up

Fire Bro returns as a playable character. He is mostly the same as before, but received some differences in his statistics. Fire Bro has improved fielding and batting abilities, exceeding against Hammer Bro and Boomerang Bro in the latter. However, Fire Bro's pitching stat was lowered, and it was made worse than Hammer Bro's and Boomerang Bro's.

In Mario Party 9

Fire Bro's. Battle Minigame

Fire Bro is one of the hosts of the Battle minigames when landing on a Battle Space, although not as often as a Hammer Bro. Fire Bro has the characters play in a Free-for-All minigame decided by either the captain or the character in last place. Fire Bro stands on a floating platform that is red instead of green like Hammer Bro's.

Fire Bro distributes the Mini Stars differently than Hammer Bro: Instead of taking three Mini Stars from each playable character and redistributing them according to the characters' performance, Fire Bro tosses a fireball whoever is in last place, taking away ten of their Mini Stars and distributing them to the other characters. If there are four characters, two, three, and five Mini Stars go to the characters who ranked third, second, and first, respectively. If there are three characters, the character in second place receives two Mini Stars and the character in first receives seven Mini Stars. If two players tie for last, the Fire Bro takes five Mini Stars from each character and gives them to whoever won. If every player ties for first or last, nobody loses or gains any Mini Stars. If the character in last place does not have at least ten Mini Stars, Fire Bro provides the rest to the other characters.

In Mario & Luigi series

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

Fire Bro. In Battle
A Fire Bro in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

Fire Bros are enemies which appear in Neo Bowser Castle. In the field, Fire Bros. throw fireballs at Mario and Luigi upon noticing them. The fireballs disappear upon hitting the ground, but touching a fireball starts a battle against the Fire Bro.

In battle, the main attack of a Fire Bro is throwing fireballs at Mario or Luigi rapidly, and occasionally also a Five Coin. The Fire Bro's tell is the foot he stands on: His right foot indicates Mario, while the left foot indicates Luigi. The targeted bro can dodge the fireballs only by jumping over them. Another attack used by a Fire Bro is throwing a large fireball into the sky for it to rain down on the targeted Bro on either the next turn of the Fire Bro or at the end of the battle. The tell is similar to the fireball attack in that the Fire Bro raises its right arm when targeting Mario or its left arm when targeting Luigi. The large fireball attack can be countered with a hammer, but it can be unexpected if the player forgets that the attack is incoming. Mario or Luigi may be inflicted with the Char status if a fireball hits them.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

Fire Bro. Battle Time
A Fire Bro. in battle in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

Fire Bros. return as enemies, as well as their paper counterparts, which are now distinctly identified as Paper Fire Bros. Fire Bros. are first seen in Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario's second visit to Twinsy Tropics Dungeon. After Crinkle Goomba betrays the trio and gives the red medallion to two Fire Bros., the Mario Bros. have to figure out which of the Fire Bros. has the red medallion during the mission Hunt for the Medallion by fighting them and receiving hints from them upon defeat.

In battle, Fire Bros. attack by standing on either side of a Mario Bro and throwing fireballs. Like the previous game, the fireballs can be dodged by jumping over them, in which case the Fire Bro on the other side takes damage from the fireball instead. They also occasionally throw Mushrooms over the brother. Similar to the large attack from the previous game, Fire Bros. can throw fireballs, which land on the Mario Bros. the next turn. For some of the fireballs, Fire Bro jumps, but these do not land on the Mario Bros.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions

Fire Bro. Turf

Fire Bros. are enemies and recruitable allies exclusively in the Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser campaign. They are ranged troopers that attack by throwing fireballs at enemies. Attacks from Fire Bros. are effective against Pokeys and Fuzzbushes, although Fire Bros. are vulnerable to Ice Bros. Fire Bros. can be used strategically in battles against flying enemies.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey

Fire Bro. G-Force Agent Data

Fire Bros. appear only in the Bowser Jr.'s Journey campaign, both as enemies and recruitable allies. Their attacks are effective against plant-based enemies, such as Fire Stalking Piranha Plants, Sockops, Borps, Treevils, and Beehosses. Fire Bros. are vulnerable to attacks from either an Ice Bro or a Parabones. Fire Bros. are once again strategic in battles against flying enemies.

In Mario Golf series

Since the Sunset Tour, Fire Bro has his own cup bearing his name, Fire Bro Cup.

In Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Fire Bro Cover

Fire Bros. behave as they did in Super Mario 3D World and tossing fireballs at Captain Toad or Toadette. The Toads either have to dodge the incoming fireballs or take cover whenever the fireballs make their shots. A Fire Bro can be defeated either from a stomp or the effects of a Super Pickax. Fire Bros. appear only in two levels, Battle Tower Blitz and Beep Block Sky Plaza.

In Mario Tennis Aces

Fire Bros. Tennis

Fire Bros. play a role in Adventure mode. Two are first seen in the mission Sure Shot Challenge (Advanced), throwing tennis balls with a Hammer Bro. Fire Bros. are the second group of enemies to battle in the Defeat Bowser's Minions! mission, where they attack by throwing fireballs, but can be defeated from knocking the fireballs back at them. Some of the fireballs are purple, which have to be blocked to return it back to the Fire Bro, causing it to bounce back as a regular fireball.

Fire Bros. are among the audience members during tennis matches in general. They wear shirts depicting one of the participating tennis players.

Crossover appearances
