Lifts (also known as Elevators or Moving Platforms) are a recurring object in the Mario franchise and related media. They first appear in the arcade game Donkey Kong.
Lifts are a type of platform that moves a character or object to different heights, either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, depending on the type of Lift. Some Lifts move by themselves, while others have to be controlled manually.
There are two sets of lifts in 75m: one of which goes up while the other moves down. Lifts appear to work via a chain-like mechanism. When an elevator reaches the end of its path, it disappears, and a new one appears at the beginning of the path, as opposed to a single elevator going up and down.
Lifts make a reappearance, acting similarly as in the original Donkey Kong. In some levels, there are levers that can change the direction in which the Lifts move.
The game features lifts similar to those in Donkey Kong for Game Boy. A lift continuously appears at one end of a track and travels in a direction before disappearing at the other end. The direction of every lift in a level can sometimes be changed by pressing a Direction Switch.
Lifts first appear in World 1-2. A Lift can move either horizontally or vertically, although this depends on the lift. Some lifts are stationary, and descend if Mario or Luigi jumps onto them.
Lifts appear in a few different courses. In Hazy Maze Cave, there is one particular lift named the Work Elevator, which moves in the direction of whichever directional arrow that Mario is standing on.
In Sky Station Galaxy, there are lifts that appear as yellow platforms. If Mario or Luigi stands on a lift, it raises them up, flashes blue, and then disappears. These lifts have a giant variation in Supermassive Galaxy.
Mario and Luigi come across a few different lifts during their journey. At the end of Teehee Valley is a lift that connects to Little Fungitown, and there are also a few Lifts in Guffawha Ruins.
Various blue lifts make an appearance throughout, and using them often requires a ! Box to be activated. There are also red lifts that move on a horizontal path when stepped on and yellow lifts that only take the Mario Bros. up upon being stepped on.
Lifts from Super Mario 3D Land appear as platforms in 3D Land, which itself begins on three stationary lifts. During the second portion, the characters fight on four multi-colored lifts as they are transitioned to the third portion of the stage, but because some platforms may collide into protruding rocks along the way, this can affect the angle in which the lift travels.
In PictoChat 2, one of the drawings that may appear is a row of blocks between a pair of continuously moving lifts like in World 1-2 of Super Mario Bros.
