The Tanooki Suit is a recurring item in the Super Mario series. It debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3, and is not to be confused with the Super Leaf, a similar power-up that debuted in the same game.

Super Mario Bros. 3 / Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3
Wearing the suit allows Mario to fly (similarly to the Super Leaf and Cape Feather) and turn into a statue for about five seconds if the player presses the Down and B buttons. In statue form, Mario can avoid any enemy, and this also allows him to defeat most enemies via stomping including Beetles, Piranha Plants and Spinys. Most notably this will allow you to statue stomp Roto-Discs, Podoboos, the right side of Thwomps, the left side of Lava Lotuses, Burners, and Chain Chomps, which are not normally possible to defeat by other conventional means. Avoid attempting to statue stomp Nipper Plants as they are immune to the attack and it will cost you the suit when the effect wears off.
Collecting a Tanooki Suit is worth 1,000 points, like most other power-ups.
Super Mario 3D Land
While the item form doesn't reappear in Super Mario 3D Land, the effects of the Super Leaf can be obtained to resemble the appearance of Mario in a Tanooki Suit. Mario can still use his tail to strike objects, but with the Super Leaf, he cannot fly nor turn into a statue.
A new power-up, the Statue Leaf, also grants Mario an advanced Tanooki Suit which does allow Mario to become a statue.

Origin
The suit is based on the tanuki, a Raccoon Dog native to Japan which is featured heavily in Japanese mythology. The statue has the general appearance of Jizō, with Mario's mustache.
