Stingby is an enemy which first appears in Super Mario 3D Land.
Profile
Physical description
Stingbies resemble a bee, but a quirk is that their stinger is on their face.
Behavior
They chase after Mario and Luigi when they are encountered and the Bros may defeat it by jumping on top of it or by any power-up. These enemies are located mainly in sky levels and can only fly straight unlike other bees which can fly up and/or down.
In Super Mario series
Super Mario 3D Land
Stingbies are first encountered in World 2-4. They are common in levels taking place in the sky or over large pits. Stingbies fly at a certain height and cannot move up or down. When a Stingby spots Mario or Luigi, it slowly flies after them angrily. A Stingyby can be defeated by any form of attack.
Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
Stingbies are first introduced in the World 1 level, Switch Scramble Circus.
The Bowser's Fury campaign features a cat variation, aptly named Cat Stingby.
Super Mario Maker 2
They can be placed as enemies in the Super Mario 3D World style. They can also be given a Super Mushroom to turn them into Big Stingbies. Similar to Super Mario 3D Land, Stingbies cannot move horizontally, this time always horizontally, due to the 2.5D perspective.
In Mario Kart 7

Stingbies are obstacles in the battle course Honeybee Hive. They fly around, knocking out any karts upon contact.
In Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Stingbies are enemies exclusively within the Wii U version, where they appear in Conkdor Canyon. Stingbies chase after Captain Toad upon encountering him, but he can defeat a Stingby by either landing on it or from a spin.
In Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
While normal Stingbies do not appear, there is an unused paper variant named Paper Stingby.
In Super Mario Party Jamboree
Stingbies appear in the boss minigame Mega Stingby Stompers, where they assist Mega Stingby, a giant Stingby who appears for the first time. Stingbies specifically appear when Mega Stingby is at half-health, but the characters can defeat a Stingby by stomping it, as usual.
Trivia
- A similar enemy called an Urban Stingby appears in Super Mario Odyssey. They at first appear in a larval form, but then grow to their adult form once Mario comes nearby. At that point, they charge. If they hit something, be it friend or foe, the Urban Stingby will self-destruct, dealing damage to anybody near the impact.
