Recorder

Super Mario Paper Mario

The Recorder, also known as the Flute, is an item which first appears in The Legend of Zelda series, specifically The Legend of Zelda, before making its first Mario-related appearance in Super Mario Bros. 3.

Description

In the original The Legend of Zelda, the Recorder has several uses, and the most common one is summoning a whirlwind that carries the hero, Link, to another part of the overworld. This effect was retained in Super Mario Bros. 3 except it instead takes Mario or Luigi to the Warp Zone. In both games, using the Recorder plays a distinctive six-note theme named the Warping Theme. Interestingly, the tornado-like warp usually appears from the right of the screen in Super Mario Bros. 3 rather than the left in its original source material.

During the first quest, Link can find the Recorder in Level-5. Here, it is essential to defeat the boss Digdogger. If Link blows the Recorder, Digdogger shrinks and becomes vulnerable to a sword attack from the young hero. In the Second Quest, the Recorder can be found in in Level 2.

In the Overworld, the Recorder can be used to reveal hidden entrances to various locations, including Level-7 in the first quest, Level-6 in the Second Quest, and several hidden caves in the latter. In normal circumstances, using the Recorder in the Overworld summons a whirlwind that warps Link to the entrance of a Dungeon he has completed. Even during the Second Quest, the Recorder takes him to where the dungeons in the original quest were located, provided he completes the Second Quest's dungeon of the same number.

Link can warp to the next completed dungeon in sequence if he blows the Recorder while facing north or east. If he blows the Recorder while facing west or south, Link is taken to the previous warp destination in sequence. Also, if Link blows into the Recorder several times while the whirlwind approaches, he can cycle through the sequence indefinitely.

Hyrule Warriors series

In Hyrule Warriors and its reissues, the Recorder is one of the Item Cards in Adventure mode. In the downloadable Majora's Mask Pack, the Recorder is featured as a Baton titled the 8-Bit Recorder.

In Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition, the 8-Bit Recorder is no longer a weapon of its own, but if the "8-Bit Weapons" setting is on, it replaces the Liquid Glorious Baton.

In the Mario franchise

SMB3 World 1-Fortress Whistle

Super Mario Bros. 3

In its Super Mario Bros. 3 appearance, the item is named the Warp Whistle. There are three of them within the game, two of which are hidden in levels of the Grass Land and one in the overworld of Desert Land. Like in The Legend of Zelda, using the Warp Whistle plays the same melody and summons a Whirlwind, but it instead takes Mario or Luigi to the Warp Zone.

If a Warp Whistle is used in World 1, Mario or Luigi can only use the Warp Zone to access either Desert Land, Water Land, or Giant Land, the second, third, and fourth worlds respectively. If a Warp Whistle is used in any world ranging from Desert Land to Ice Land, the Warp Zone only allows access to either Sky Land, Ice Land, or Pipe Land, the fifth, sixth, and seventh worlds respectively. Lastly, using a Warp Whistle in either Pipe Land, Dark Land, or within the Warp Zone itself only allows Mario or Luigi to access the eighth and final world, Dark Land. If the plumbers managed to obtain two Warp Whistles in World 1, the first use will make them access the first four Worlds as usual, but the second one will immediately allow Mario or Luigi to reach Dark Land, making the game able to be completed quickly.

World 1-3

If Mario/Luigi crouch long enough on a white block, they will fall into the background and be able to run behind the scenery, as well as the black wall at the end. At the end is a Toad House containing the first Warp Whistle.

World 1-Fortress

The second Warp Whistle is found at the Grass Land Fortress. Once Mario/Luigi obtains the Super Leaf from a block where the first door is located, they can fly up above the ceiling where the door is. After flying as far as they can at the end, they can press on the D-Pad to be warped to a room containing a treasure box with the Warp Whistle.

World 2

The final Warp Whistle can be obtained by breaking a rock at the top right corner of the screen (after defeating the Boomerang Bro. that is holding the Hammer). After breaking the rock, they will reach a secret area with a Fire Bro.. Defeating the Fire Bro. will help Mario/Luigi claim the final Warp Whistle.

Paper Mario: Color Splash

The player can find the Warp Whistle in the Green Energy Plant in a course dedicated to Super Mario Bros. 3.

The Legend of Zelda television series

It appears in the fifth episode, "Sing for the Unicorn," with the name "magic whistle." After defeating two Lynels, Link finds a magic whistle and keeps it, deeming it to be useful later on. Toward the end of the episode, Link uses the magic whistle to summon a whirlwind that takes him and the other characters out of the dungeon. The magic whistle plays the Warping Theme just like in The Legend of Zelda.

The Legend of Zelda (Valiant Comics)

It appears in the second issue of The Legend of Zelda from Valiant Comics, in which it is named "Magic Whistle." At the start, Link tells Princess Zelda to use the Warp Whistle if ever she is in danger so that he can arrive to help her. As she is being ambushed by Ganon's minions, Zelda admits that she needs help, so she uses the Magic Whistle to call Link. When he does not appear, she realizes that something must have happened to him.

Crossover appearances

NES Remix series

In NES Remix, the objective of Stage 15-4 of the The Legend of Zelda challenges is for Link to collect the Recorder (spelled lowercase in the game). The Super Mario Bros. 3 iteration of the item, the Magic Whistle, does not appear in any of said game's challenges. The recorder returns in the same challenge in both NES Remix Pack and Ultimate NES Remix.
