Whirlpool

Mario Discovery Super Mario

A Whirlpool is an object which appears in a handful of Mario games, especially within the Super Mario series. A Whirlpool first appears in Mario's Time Machine, but only in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System version. While whirlpools are not a hazardous obstacle in Mario's Time Machine, many later appearances feature whirlpools as such; in many later appearances, if a Whirlpools sucks in Mario or another character, they lose a life.

In Mario's Time Machine

A whirlpool appears during the surfing minigame, after Mario has collected ten Mushrooms. Mario has to enter the whirlpool to travel to the time period that he selected on the Timulator beforehand. The whirlpool only appears in the Super Nintendo version, as the PC and MS-DOS versions instead transport Mario automatically after he has collected four Mushrooms.

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

In Super Mario series

Super Mario 64/Super Mario 64 DS

A whirlpool is featured in the center of the first area of Dire, Dire Docks, around the bottom of the water. If Mario (or Luigi, Wario, or Yoshi in the remake) are sucked into the whirlpool, they lose a life.

New Super Mario Bros.

Whirlpools only appear in World 6-5. Here, whirlpools have a pattern of repeatedly appearing and then disappearing. If Mario or Luigi is caught in a whirlpool, the player must press the A button repeatedly to prevent them from being sucked in, otherwise they lose a life. An exception to this is one particular whirlpool that takes Mario or Luigi down to a hidden area with the third Star Coin.

Super Mario Galaxy

Whirlpools appear in both the Sea Slide Galaxy and the Bigmouth Galaxy. They are not a stage hazard, and instead have the opposite effect of pushing Mario or Luigi forward.

New Super Mario Bros. 2

Like in New Super Mario Bros., whirlpools appear in only one level, specifically World 3-2. They function the same as in New Super Mario Bros..
