Assist Blocks are a type of block featured in certain Super Mario series games. They first appear in Super Mario 3D Land.
Description
An Assist Block is a golden block containing either an Invincibility Leaf or a P-Wing, usually the former. An image of the contained power-up is displayed on the sides of the Assist Block. An Assist Block appears in a level if either Mario, Luigi, or another character has lost a life in that level at least five times. It appears at either the start of the level or near a Checkpoint Flag, if it has been activated, depending on the playable character's progress and therefore the area they restart from after losing a life.
The power-up within an Assist Block always assists the player's character complete a level, such as how the Invincibility Leaf makes the character invincible. In the case of P-Wings, which are only featured in an Assist Block in Super Mario 3D Land, one takes Mario or Luigi to the end of the level. An Assist Block with a P-Wing only appears in a level if the character has lost a life there at least ten times.
