UFOs (short for Unidentified Flying Objects), also called "Flying Saucers," are recurring vehicles in the Mario franchise. They first appear in Donkey Kong 3: Dai Gyakushū and appear in several games in the Super Mario Bros. franchise.

Description

UFOs are the primary method of transportation for aliens. Their shapes and sizes can vary, but all of them are consistently high-tech vehicles that can travel large distances in space.

History

In Donkey Kong 3: Dai Gyakushū

UFOs first appear in Donkey Kong 3: Dai Gyakushū, and can be seen in several early backgrounds. In this game, their coloration is lime green. One is the setting of the fifth stage.

In the Super Mario series

In Super Mario Land

UFOs make their debut in the main Mario franchise in Super Mario Land, which features them appearing at the start of each land level in the Muda Kingdom, as though Mario used them to get there.

In Super Mario Galaxy

During his attack on the Star Festival, Bowser tears Princess Peach's castle from the ground with the help of a massive UFO at the start of Super Mario Galaxy. This same UFO can be seen during the fly-in cutscene in his Galaxy Reactor. There is also a crashed saucer near the Hardening Lava Nodules on the Starting Planet. Topmaniac is also fought on a flying saucer, more specifically the cylindrical structure at the top. The Starting Planet of the Dreadnought Galaxy gets redesigned for Revenge of the Topman Tribe, going from a cone-shaped planet firing lasers at a duplicate of itself in Infiltrating the Dreadnought to resembling a UFO, with a more squashed frustum.

In Super Mario Odyssey

UFOs make an appearance in this Super Mario Odyssey, being seen in the Moon Kingdom. Their appearance is similar to a smaller version of Torkdrift, who resembles a flying saucer, with a flower inside them, a white body, and an antenna poking from the dome on their top side resembling Torkdrift's eyes. The Art of Super Mario Odyssey has a vague allusion to their relationship with Torkdrift. They also appear alongside regional birds within the Mushroom Kingdom when Princess Peach and Tiara return.

UFOs have a miniboss variant called Yoofoe that can be found in the Wooded Kingdom, this game's version of Bowser's Kingdom, and the Darker Side area.

In Dr. Mario

UFOs make an appearance in Dr. Mario, where they beam up Viri if the player completes Level 20 at high speed.

In the Mario Party series

In Mario Party 2

UFOs are mentioned in Mario Party 2 (where they are referred to as Bob-omb UFOs), but they are not actually seen. If the player spends ten coins, they transport the player to another location in Mystery Land.

In Mario Party 5

UFOs appear in various shapes in the minigame ID UFO in Mario Party 5, and have to be identified by their design.

In Mario Party 6

The Castaway Bay board features a UFO at night near the Star space in Mario Party 6. The minigame Freeze Frame also has them in the nighttime version, where any player who takes a picture of one gets three points. In the daytime version, Shy Guys appear instead.

In the Mario & Luigi series

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time

The Shroob military uses flying saucers to transport troops, supplies, and/or prisoners in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. This is the first game where the rider can be seen, sometimes sticking out of the top. There is also an enemy called Lakitufo (a variant of Lakitu) that clings to a flying saucer rather than a cloud.

In Mario & Luigi: Brothership

No actual UFOs can be seen during the events of Mario & Luigi: Brothership, but Mario and Luigi are able to merge into one with a variant of the Spin Jump.

In Princess Peach: Showtime!

Princess Peach encounters many flying saucers that have aligned with the Sour Bunch in the Mighty Peach leavels. Large UFOs appear as bosses in those levels, with the exception of The Dark Space & the Great Meteor, where the Mighty Sparkla has to be rescued instead.
