Birdos are a species of dinosaur-like creatures with noses the shape of a cannon that shoot eggs when they are startled or upset. They first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 2 and have made many appearances since then. Birdos have their own representative of the same name with different colors and sometimes have different characteristics and depicted with the same feminine characteristics as the main Birdo, similar to how the Yoshis have their own character representative with different color and characteristic wise.

Super Mario Bros. 2/Super Mario Advance

Birdos are encountered as a mini-boss several times throughout the game, as early as World 1-1, and usually at the end of a world's first or second level. A Birdo attacks by spitting a projectile out of its snout, which differs between its three color variants; the pink Birdos only spit eggs, red Birdos alternate between spitting eggs and fireballs, and green Birdos (some of which are colored gray in the original Nintendo Entertainment System version due to hardware limitations) only spit fireballs. It is not made clear who the main Birdo character is.

The player's character can attack a Birdo by throwing either an egg or a Mushroom Block, if it is available, at her. Because green Birdos only spit fireballs, throwing a Mushroom Block is the only way to attack them. A Birdo is defeated after three hits, regardless of color variation. Most Birdos, upon being defeated, spit out a Crystal Ball as they fall off-screen, allowing the player's character to open a Hawkmouth and proceed to the next level.

In World 4-3, a pink Birdo is featured as a standard enemy, and is the first Birdo to not have a Crystal Ball. The player's character is required to ride on an egg that she spits out to travel across a wide pit.

The final level, World 7-2, features two red Birdos, which are the only other two Birdos to not release a Crystal Ball upon being defeated. The first red Birdo is a regular enemy like the one in World 4-3, while the second one drops a key upon being defeated that is necessary for continuing onward to Wart's Lair.

Both the Nintendo Entertainment System version's manual and the end credits have an error in which the names for Birdo and Ostro are switched around. This would not be fixed in the end credits until Super Mario Advance.

Many different colored Birdos appear in the backgrounds and in cutscenes. The Red Birdo is most notable, as she appears when Bowser wins a trophy. The main Birdo does not appear, nor do any pink Birdos even appear in the background.

Birdos participate the most when it comes to soccer. Different teams of Birdos can be chosen by team captains to help win. These members of the Birdos are very aggressive, scoring hard hits and playing rough. There are also a large groups of Birdo spectators in the crowds.

Mario Strikers Charged

Birdos serve as sidekicks again, and they all have different uniforms and colors, depending on who your team captain is. Birdos, once again, fill up the crowds. There are nine different color sets of Birdos which are red, orange, a duller orange, yellow, a duller yellow, green, blue, purple and pink.

Birdo appears as a team captain, her team being called the Birdo Bows. There are also different colored playable Birdos and different colored Birdos in the audience.

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!

Birdos appear in five animated segments, the first time being in "Jungle Fever," followed by "Toad Warriors," "On Her Majesty's Sewer Service," "The Unzappables," and lastly "Escape from Koopatraz." These Birdos are part of the "Koopa Pack". In one of the episodes a Birdo must rescue her baby. Another episode there is a Birdo with giant wings that his hired by Bowser.
