A Barrel Cannon is a recurring object in the Donkey Kong franchise. They first appear in Donkey Kong Country, but have also made recurring appearances throughout Mario spinoffs since Mario Kart: Double Dash!!.
Description
A Barrel Cannon has an opening at the top where it can blast a character from in whichever direction it is pointing. Barrel Cannons have a common variation named Blast Barrels, which automatically launch whoever is in it rather than when the player presses a button. Blast Barrels themselves have a variation known as an Arrow Barrel, which have an arrow painted on the side.
Blast Barrels and Arrow Barrels tend to be identified as Barrel Cannons in games not developed by Rare. An example of this is in WarioWare Gold's Donkey Kong Country microgame, in which the Barrel Cannon uses the sprite of a Blast Barrel.
In Mario Kart series
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
A giant Barrel Cannon known as the Donkey Cannon (as indicated from a sign of Donkey Kong pointing to it) is featured in DK Mountain. Whenever the racers drive into it, it blasts them all away across to the mountain on the other side.
Mario Kart Wii
A large Barrel Cannon appears in three courses, DK Summit, Maple Treeway, and the returning GCN DK Mountain. They function the same as in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, although the Barrel Cannon in Maple Treeway lacks the "DK" initials because it is not a Donkey Kong course. In DK Summit, the Barrel Cannon launches the racers over the mesh fence, and in Maple Treeway, the Barrel Cannon launches them through the leaves. In GCN DK Mountain, the signpost reading "Donkey Cannon" instead reads DK Cannon.
Mario Kart 7
The Barrel Cannon returns in Wii Maple Treeway, functioning the same as in Mario Kart Wii.
Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
A Barrel Cannon was added in N64 Yoshi Valley, replacing the Long Route in the original Mario Kart 64 iteration of the course.
Mario Kart Tour
A silver Barrel Cannon with blue hoops and supports was added to the planet section of 3DS Rainbow Road R. It functions similarly to earlier Mario Kart installments.
In Mario Party series
Mario Party 8

Here, they are named DK Barrel Cannons, and are a feature of the DK's Treetop Temple board. When a character passes a DK Barrel Cannon, they have the option of paying five coins to launch themselves toward a higher location on the board.
Mario Party 9
Similarly to Mario Party 8, Barrel Cannons appear in Donkey Kong's board, DK's Jungle Ruins. Here, if a character lands on a Lucky Space, a Barrel Cannon launches them to a floating island where they can increase their Bananas counter. Several Barrel Cannons appear in the boss minigames Diddy's Banana Blast and DK's Banana Bonus, where they are used to reach Bananas.
Mario Party 10
There is a giant Barrel Cannon located at the top of the Donkey Kong Board. Whenever the player's amiibo comes across this cannon, they have a choice to enter the cannon to launch to a space where one of the other amiibo are on.
Mario Party: Star Rush
Barrel Cannons appear in the minigame Leafboard Hoard, in which the characters can select one of three Barrel Cannons to launch into a line of coins in the air, with some paths having more coins than others.
In Mario Baseball series
Mario Superstar Baseball
In Donkey Kong Jungle, there are two large Barrel Cannons stationed on the sides of the baseball field, where they shoot barrels onto the field, possibly hitting fielders in the process.
Mario Super Sluggers
In Challenge mode, the map for DK Jungle features a Barrel Cannon that launches the player's character across the waterfall. Similarly to Donkey Kong Jungle in the previous game, DK Jungle itself retains the two Barrel Cannons that shoot barrels onto the field.
