Dino Rhinos are a dinosaur-like enemy featured in Super Mario World.
Profile
Physical description
Dino Rhinos are essentially a larger variation of Dino-Torches, and both of them have the appearance of a dark green triceratops.
Behavior
Dino Rhinos move forward, although unlike Dino-Torches, they cannot breathe fire.
In Super Mario series
Super Mario World
Here, they are only found on Chocolate Island, and Dino Rhinos are rather large enemies to deal with. They mainly attack by trying to ram into Mario or Luigi, and are even capable of hopping over short obstacles in order to continue the chase. Mario or Luigi can stomp on a Dino Rhino to turn it into a Dino-Torch, but can instantly defeat a Dino Rhino by either performing a Spin Jump onto it or by having Yoshi jump on it. Dino Rhinos are invulnerable to Fire Mario's fireballs, and they cannot be eaten by Yoshi, unlike Dino-Torches. Defeating a Dino Rhino earns the player 200 points.
Super Mario Bros. 3 remakes
In both the Super Mario All-Stars and Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 remakes, the King of Water Land was transformed into an indigo Dino Rhino.
In Paper Mario series
Paper Mario
Though Dino Rhinos themselves do not appear, they received a variant named Albino Dino, which are guards of the Crystal Palace.
Paper Mario: Color Splash
Dino Rhinos appear as enemies. They are found in Mossrock Theater and The Emerald Circus, being under the control of a Shy Guy. In battle, Dino Rhinos are shown to have a lot of HP. They attack with fire breath, like a Dino-Torch, and ramming. In the Emerald Circus, if an Animal Trainer Shy Guy is not present in the battle, Dino Rhinos get out of control and become Wild Dino Rhinos.
Paper Mario: The Origami King
One Dino Rhino appears as a non-playable character, and it appears in the Shroom City café, singing alongside a Ptooie and a Sombrero Guy.
The in-game concept art shows that origami Dino Rhinos were originally going to be enemies.
In other media
Super Mario World television series
Dino Rhinos, although unnamed in the series, only appear in one episode, "Send in the Clown." Here, a Dino-Rhino, along with two Dino-Torches, is shown to be held in a cage in King Koopa's Koopaling Bros. Circus. After being shoved into this cage by King Koopa, Mario narrowly avoids being eaten by the Dino-Rhino, when he becomes Fire Mario and shoots fireballs into the Dino Rhino's mouth to defeat it.
Trivia
- It has sometimes been ambiguous as to whether Dino Rhinos or Dino-Torches are the parent species. However, the meaning behind a Dino-Torch's Japanese name is "small Dino Rhino," suggesting Dino Rhinos to be the parent species.
